Right now I try a Gargoyle's Quest run. Any tips? What I need? Which Items must I get to complete this game?
I have play it for years, many years. The first Stage was hard till I done it. But I have no idea anymore, which items you need and which you can skip. Or can you skip all Items and will you get important items automatical?
Right now I have done the 1. Stage up to the Boss. But not the Boss yet.
Gargoyle's Quest Movie Stage 1 with Boss
Normaly I try No Damage Runs, but here it takes to much time, when I wait by the one tree, so I jump through the one fire enemie and get hit here one time to save time.
I try to jump as late as possible and only as high as you must to reach the next platforms. So it looks maybe great at the moment. Must only find a good way for the 1. Boss. Boss Fight are the hardest parts for me.

I also played this game for several years ago. I can't help you really because I don't remember much of it but I THINK the items you need you will get automatically after completing quests and besides that I THINK you can skip the rest. There might be some side quest to boost strength or something but I don't remember this for sure. It could have been the NES game that has that, or some other game. I hope you continue though because this game rocks!

I will be following this very very closely.
All I can tell you from my experience in the game is that I always thought that those jumps you just barely can't make in console could be easily made with emulation tools. Try to experiment with some of the cliffs that require more flight power, or whatever.
Also, look into what left/right and up/down can do for you, both in walking and in flight.
Left/Right do near nothing like Up/Down. I only walk Left or Up, nothing special I think.
Defeat now the 1. Boss. Same Link.
Luck manipulation is easy here. Just wait 1 Frame before walk, and you will not walk into random fights which sometimes outside from the Stages. Or walk a different way to the next Town or Stage.

WOW, found a great Glitch in the beginning from the 2. Stage.
GQ Movie with SaveState F2
This SaveState is right before you will see the Glitch. Its the same Glitch like in Super Mario Bros 3, with this it is possible to walk through walls. Was only luck, that I found it out, now I try, if I can use it in the 1. Stage maybe to finish it much faster. But not 100% sure how this Glitch work. Normaly you will hang on the wall, but here I jump through the wall and walk inside from it.
I think you must be near the wall and jump only as high as one stone, then you will maybe land inside. I must now test it much in the 1. Stage, then the movie will be awesome.
Maybe this Glitch will help me in other Stages more, because in Stage 2 its no much help, only looks great there.
EDIT:
Can't get it to work in Stage 1. Try by more walls, never work there. Not sure why it work in Stage 2?
I test it in Stage 2 at the beginning, and there it work great and easy, but not in Stage 1. You must press 7 Frames the Jump Button, and stand near the wall. But this will not work in Stage 1.
Maybe I can get it to work in later Stages again, but not sure. Maybe there must special Walls with fire behind it where this only work, or it work first after you can jump higher.

The block type is different, so that might have something to do with it.
I could easily perform the glitch in real time, so maybe the block is a platform that you can stand on and jump through from the other 3 sides.
Yes, I have think too, that it has maybe to do something with the block type. But in the 1. Stage at the end is the same block after defeat the Boss. But I can't jump through this one. I have try more times, no luck.
Maybe it is the block type and the high jump, which I get in the 1. Town? I will maybe find it out later, when there is the same block type somewhere else.
Or this is just a Glitch, which only work at this block at the beginning from Stage 2?
I can't do it in real time. Its to fast for me. Because it work only by me, when I jump for 7 Frames. 1 Frame more is to high, 1 Frame less to low.

So next Stage done, 2. Boss, the 4 Eyes. I am very happy with the result.
I defeat them in a great order to lose no time. The last Eye infront of the exit, that I can fast jump out.
Found one nice Bug again after I defeat the Boss. I jump on the wall, where the exit will open. So after the exit opened I hang in the air, but it looks that I hang on a wall. Its again very short, because I jump as fast as I can to the exit.
Stage 3, 2. Boss done

Maybe someone else can figure it out... It might just be in that one area that it works, since I would think that the blocks should both have the same properties. I can do it in real time, but it takes a few minutes. I clicked the link to your latest movie but I got an error.
Sorry, I have make an error in this link. Now it will work. Mix the % with &.
My mother has the idea, that it has maybe something to do with the way behind this stone. Because in Stage 1 there is no way behind the stone, but here in Stage 2 its a way with fire on it. So the game maybe think it as complete way when you jump not so high. But this is too only an idea and not sure.
And the stone under the glitch stone is different. In Stage 1 both stones are the same, here are 2 different stones. Maybe it has all something to do with this.
Here a picture what my mother mean:
So maybe the complete way is important for this glitch what I show in red here.

Yeah, I thought about that. It might have something to do with it.
I found a few things while watching your movie:
1. In Stage 1, while crossing the collapsing bridge, is it possible to kill the bats from a distance so it doesn't cause lag right there?
2. In Stage 2, when you jump down before the lava pits you can jump early so you don't jump against the wall.
3. In Stage 3, when you're going up inside the building for the first time, wouldn't it be faster to jump against the left wall only?
Why lag? I defeat them without lose time or lag? I move always right while defeat them.
Edit 1: I have not press the right button for 1 Frame a short time before I jump onto the collapsing bridge. But I found out that this cost no time, because I must not press every Frame the right button, I will still move to the right.
But on the collapsing bridge I see no error. I lose no time. So its not important that I defeat the bats so late. Can't see any lag here.
Edit 2: Now I think I understand what do you mean. Have not think about this one. Maybe when I do a second version I will do it. Great what someone else can see in runs what others not notice or think about.
After the 2 tree enemies? Not sure, I have not think about it as I done it. Seems, that its a bit faster.
Sorry, that this one will contain some minor errors. But near all TAS runs can be faster when you use other strategies, and most are absolved sometimes. Maybe I must redone this one later, but now I am so far, that I will not redone it for such minor errors. Sorry.
Maybe I first do a testrun. Then I can improve my next version, when I will do a second version. Not sure if I will sumbit this at all when it is done. So I will collect these errors and will maybe done a better one later. So thanks for the infos.

So finally I found a bit time and motivation to work on this run again.
Now I get the Falcon Wings and end infront of the Broken Bridge. I have found a nice trick here. You can skip a hard fight. I just speak first with the ghoul infront of the broken bridge and then get the Falcon Wings. Now I can fly over the bridge without defeat the hard enemie.
When you first get the Wings and speak then with the ghoul he will fight you and this fight is very hard. I have try long with Frame Advance. So now I done it without this fight, which is much faster I think.
I must go only a bit back for the Wings.
Normaly its not possible, because if you enter a random fight or town the ghoul will be infront of the bridge again.
EDIT:
I see now, that I have use the wrong weapon on this hard ghoul fight. With the new weapon is much easier. But its a great trick at all, because its near impossible in a non Tool-assisted-Speedrun. So I let it be without this fight in this run.
Maybe there will be a second run with some improvments like this fight.

I know its a long time that an update came from me. Sorry about that. Many other things in my head at the moment. But today as internet has not working for some hours I have make a small update and arrive at the next Boss. Looks like that not much is done, but there where some hard parts here in this Stage, that I lose not much time.
Same file as always.
Arrive near next Boss
Strange, why is this no clickable link?
The %20 must be the reason, because other links will work. So I must maybe rename the file later.
EDIT: Defeat the Boss

So after month I have try again to finish this run. Now only one short Stage, the Last Stage and the Lats Boss is missing, when I not wrong. I hope I can finish this run in the next days. I will not redone it then, because this takes me much time and was very hard to make.
I defeat now Rushifell which looks great. Because I defeat him in one turn. He never move his right arm up again.
Defeat Rushifell
EDIT: Small Stage done. Only the last Stage and Boss missing.
EDIT2: Last Stage done. Only last Boss is missing.
EDIT3: DONE. See it in Workbench or Submissions!

WOW, Found a new glitch, which maybe help to complete the game much faster.
The left-right trick work perfect here. I do something wrong, as I try it the first time. I have not activate the option by the Emulator that it will work. Have not know, that you must activate it. Now I found this option and activate it and try a bit with it.
First I think it will not help in this game. The parts will always repeat and the same parts will appear. But when do it at the right place you will scroll through the complete Stage to the first Boss.
Try it only at the first Stage yet, but maybe it will help in others too somehow. The hard part will be to find the right possitions, where you must press left and right at the same time.
Must try a bit with it and see if there will be a new Movie someday. Or someone else can try it.
Edit: The trick works only, when you walk against a Wall. Then you will pushed through it and land after some tries at the Boss. So much Stages can done faster with this trick I think.
So the trick is not, that the Stage repeat. It will work at all. Too when the background look always the same you will land at the Boss after some glitches through the Walls.
Here how it looks like. 1. Stage to the Boss.
Its much like in Zelda 2. But only work to the right and when you stand near a wall.
Gargoyles Quest Glitch RUN WIP (1. Bridge done)
First Stage done now in only 1 minute.
Edit2:
It will not work in Stages where you must walk up, or you must do it at special places maybe, but you must still get up. When you do it at a wrong place you can't get up anymore. I try it in the 3rd Stage a bit and there it seems not to help you much.
By stages where you must only go to the right it work perfect. On the small bridge it has work great.
Edit3: Some more Stages done, not much yet, but in the moment the Left/Right-Glitch work great here. The first enemie defeated. Must now not jump over the wall, just walk through it which save some frames. The bridge is too done.
Arrive now at the first Tower. Here I am not sure how can this glitch help. Because I must too jump up. And when I do this glitch the complete layout from the Stage will change. So I am not sure if it will be possible here. Must maybe do some test to see if this is helpfull or not. But maybe some Stages will look as before. Too when I must walk back to the left it is not possible I think, because when I press left and right at the same time the Gargyole walks to the right.

yo
i just thought that maybe i can try this game to train with tas runs
i played this game when i was young , i loved it and finished it a lot of times
also finished it on emulator with keyboard , that was easy too
i think i can be motivated to do a tas run training with this game :)
Good luck. I can only say, that this is a hard game for TAS. At the other side, you can learn much when you TAS this game. The world map is not hard. There you can learn luck manipulation. But the Stages are hard. There you must work much with Frame Advance to make them look good.
I want to improve this TAS myself one day. But it will take long by me till I start and finish it. I will first finish one other TAS which I started, and then maybe improve this one.
But I still not sure if I should do a glitch TAS from this game (left/right glitch to slide through walls to the right). It would be much faster, but much more boring I think. So I will first maybe do a glitchless TAS to improve the puplished TAS.
And this will maybe miss the trick were I get the wings later. I think its faster when you get them earlier and fight the ghoul at the long bridge. But this will I test when I do the TAS.

hey it seems cool i tried first stages till the tower, its very fun to do (always checking the best ways , each try you see you could have done better^^ but i have not played the game since a lot of time now)
anyway i have some questions :
but one question at a time : first,
how to you get those .vbm files?
ok i just made a try at the first stage
(i changed the original name so that the link dont be a problem)
could you try if you can read this file with your emu? , maybe it need to be renamed with the name of your rom (ok i checked and there is no need to rename it :-))
i cant see your run , firebrand stays in the initial room and is mad
i think you wont be able to see my try too
do we need to have the same configuration for the controls?
edit
i tried a little to see how to make an .avi movie of a run , but it seems i havent found yet how to get both good quality and small video file size
i think its not the most important yet
first i need to do the run and get a good run in that .VBM file
Not try to watch your test yet. I will try later when I have time.
One thing. Do you have download the Emulator from this site here?
Download VBA here
If not, download this Emulator. Its a special version from this board here. Only with this you can watch and make vbm files which will accepted for this site here.
If yes, maybe my vbm file is to old and not compatible anymore with the new Emulators here. Because I have used and older version. Not sure if they are always work with newer Emulators.

yes i took the emulator here
now i made the whole run , but it was only a test : wasnt serious ,for example , i didnt mind with the speed of the conversations and i got 2 or 3 warp battle i could have avoided, and a few other things that can be improved (got a few lags, dunno if i can avoid those..)
this run i tried to do most of the bosses in one gust (could do it for boss 1 (been hit but only after the door was open), boss 3 , boss 5 and final boss)
also tried to get no damage and did it except the "hit in cutscene" of boss 1 but i kept it anyway
maybe i can cut some time in the story , i already figured that i could go straight to the stage 4 in the desert and dont stop at the village... but that was easy to figure out
the vbm file is here
tried to get an AVI movie , but couldnt, the file i get dont show images neither make sound
also got an error at the beginning of the end credits (the parchment scrolling text of the end) -->unknow opcode f4 at c0d0
Your movie has an other CRC as mine. Maybe you use a wrong ROM?
Your first movie play the first Boss, but desync after the Boss battle.
Must watch your other test run later. I only have seen your first WIP yet.
The Stage looks not so good, but for a test good enough. Your 1. Boss fight is much better then mine in the puplished TAS. As I do it I have not know, that I can stand infront of him and shot as fast as possible. So I lose much time here. But this was only a problem by the first Boss. Near all other Bosses are much faster by me or as fast as possible. And when I try it later again I will improve the first Boss much too, because I know now how it work and that you can stand infront of him.
No damage will lose much time I think. Because I found much shortcuts which only work, when you take damage. And these shortcuts looks great for this game I think. Most I like no damage runs too. But here I have done a damage run, because it saves much time.
EDIT: Your full movie desync for me in the beginning room. Wrong ROM I think, because different CRC then mine. And I sure I used a good ROM, because noone has problems with my old movie from this game.

my rom is the rom of the french game (i mean with french texts)
so maybe its the problem
i will try to find the good rom, and yea maybe its better to try a damage run first , but to have a fastest run
