Here's a link to a movie where I test how fast Oedo gives Ryo. I also use the glitch to get inside w/o the chain pipe. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1521933903/Ryo%20Test.m64

Any progress on this game? This is another very entertaining game that seems unfortunately forgotten.

I agree. I can't imagine a run of this game being very entertaining however minus the storyline because of it's tight game engine and lack of ways to exploit it.

Who knows how many glitches can be found, by the .m64 the game seems pretty entertaining. The only problems i see would be the annoyingly long and stupid impacto scenes, and lack of good quality emulation which Mupen64 will hopefully fix

MNSG runs well enough in mupen. It might be worth trying the new Napalm plugin to see if it can work out some of the rough spots from before. There are a few glitches that will improve watchability. The one by Oedo castle for one. You can also play Ebisu's game using Yae. The run will also skip a large part of the Festival temple. The SDA run is 3:46, so considering the mistakes and differences in run type, plus added skips, a total length of ~3 hrs may be attainable. (I suspect it might be around 3:15 though) Impact scenes can be FFwded by people watching. I haven't heard anything on the run's status. I kinda dropped it to work on Milon for SNES. (Which needs to be picked up again soon too) Last I heard the run was still in the Oedo castle key room.

Wow, that glitch looks interesting, can you explain how it works? I look forward to a run of the game, zdude, will you work on this after finishing your current job? karterfreak's work seems died. I don't know why my mupen64 lags terribly with goemon games (this one and Geomon's Adventure), does it happen to you? anyone knows how to fix the problem?

I haven't had horrible lag outside certain places with mupen on either game. Try playing with some of the video settings. I don't fully know how the castle glitch works. (It came up when I did some recon on glitches for the game) My guess is that the sign causes the player to be shoved upwards and there happens to be an invisible floor on the top of that certain map. I've tried it in a few other places, but it doesn't seem to get the same effect. As for taking the run, I may consider it after finishing Milon, but this is probably a long ways off. Mupen64Plus may be out by then. ;-) I sadly don't have much free time in the summer because of work and other projects. Getting the movement right will be the tough part of this movie. (The camera hates you) Ryo manipulation is another icky part. (See above discussion) In any case, I'm certainly willing to assist any TASer who wants to take a crack at it.

Mega bump. Currently I'm working on the game, now I finished festival temple castle. the WIP. I try to arrive the tunnel to festival village without Goemon's magic, that magic is really very useless and cost a lot of time, so I wonder if there is any way to get this. Any idea are welcome.

I beat this game for the first time recently, and it's absolutely a Top-5 favorite N64 game for me. Looking forward to a full run!

I can't get the run to play. The game starts, but just acts like there is not input. I'm kind a of a nub when it comes to in-emulator playback, so any help would be appreciated! The game copy I'm using is "Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon," and it is running a little glitchily. I've tried a few different combinations of audio/video settings. Is there an input plug-in I'm supposed to use? I'm going to try a copy of the game with the same name as the movie file, and if you don't hear from me. Okay, now it's asking for a controller pak? I'm trying to work that one out now, I guess.

Ok, you can see the plugin setting when you play the movie. Copy it here: video: Glide64 v0.7 ME SP8 sound: Jabo's DirectSound 1.6 input: TAS Input Plugin 0.6, but I don't think input plugin is a problem for playing a movie. controllers: Present (without mempak) And run with Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (U) [!].z64. No need to use a rom with the same name as the movie file.

Hmm...I got all of those settings in there, and I can now play zdude255's movie above, but not yours. Edit: Ah, because my copy of your m64 file was only 1kb! I redownloaded the movie and am watching it now.

I got about 1/10 of the way through the run before mupen crashed, but it looked very solid. Is there any way to fast forward into a game without watching the whole replay over? Anyway, glad to see a run of this game developing. Edit: Of course: the speed settings!

Okay, I watched the whole WIP. The optimization looks really good. The boss fights were all very clean. I always remember the camera and movement controls in the game being a little tricky (although I was playing with a keyboard most recently), but the run looked pretty well structured in terms of camera and movement stuff. I also liked the little play-around moments during slow parts. Looking forward to the full run!

What worries me the most when the run is submitted is the lag emulation issues the game has. I just hope thats its possible to reduce it when it gets encoded. As with the run itself the general movements from place to place aren't paticularly great. I know the camera makes it tricky to move straight and accurately, but by changing where the analogue is positioned during each frame. You would get much more fluid movements. The glitch to enter odeo castle and to skip the Impact scene was very surprising to see, but you could have tackled Mt Fuji better had you used the seam climb trick. EDIT: My suspicions were confirmed. I tried TASing up to Mt Fuji and saved 18 ingame frames , just by moving more efficiently. I felt I was being pretty lazy when I put this together, but I do find it tedious to do because you need to check where you are facing after every frame, but the frames it saves do add up in the end. It should be possible to save even more.

Can't you just tell us the problem in this thread instead of linking us to your previous posts. Is your problem playing the game back in real time? If so don't worry about it as it won't affect your abilty to TAS the game. Or is it being able start up the rom on Mupen? If thats the case then you're probably going to have to reinstall Mupen. Just unzip the orginal Mupen folder you downloaded, as that will re-write the corrupted/lost .ini files. If that doesn't help then damn me if I know what to do.

I'm wondering if anyone is planning a 100% run for this game at some point in the future.

I can start the rom..My issue is lagging Fps dropping to as low as 12 and VI to 34,and of course it repeats that lag in playback..But if you mean that you can fix the lag on mpk movie state then I will begin to planning the fastest 100% TAS route...But when laggin this big,I probly need to go through the wole game frame by frame...

This game is kinda cool, but the laugh track kills it. As for the 100% run, I watched the normal version of this concept, and truly believe a TAS version will be much cooler. Can't wait to see it.

A 100% TAS of this game is gonna kick some major ass. You can shave at least ten minutes off of the SDA run easy with a good route and money management.

Well I started to play with this game...Made many mistakes though...But decided to went through the first impact battle anyway...Had some theories that didnt work and well few other mistakes..It kind of hard for a first timer like me to play with joystick and tas input plugin so big amount of restarts are because of those and because I wanted to fool around little with the first impact boss..(and my cat is in heat,so noise distracted my concentration a lot)But if anyone likes to watch a noobie trying to TAS heres the link http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1772896579/MYSTICAL%20NINJA%20%28USA%29.m64 Just fastforward the awful coin collection..Though its not only thing that went to the woods....I know this game but I made errors a lot....Oh yes,I watched the SDA 100% yesterday;so I know TAS version can be a heck of alot faster and more entertainin..Tomorrow I start this game..Only goal is:Perfection...So if any of the experienced player should look thropugh this playback quality..Add comment is the quality of the playback acceptable..IPlease...OH,an I dont mean how I played but..I know that I screwed up..Alot...I did this in six ours so...
