I remember a lot of players whose first attempts were also terrible, yet they found the courage do learn and improve, and did great tas. one has to begin someday, so I'd like to show every beginner all my respect and my admiration. keep going, and someday you'll make it !

It sucks that someone may get discouraged and quit over harsh comments if they have potential (although I don't think Zurreco's was all that harsh, myself). Hopefully beginners can brush off those kind of comments, and if determined enough, outdo their critics.

Yes! That´s what I was trying to say. And about my run, it seems I´ve found a nice fast route. The only thing that´s worrying me is Chaos. I´ve got to make tests to fiind a weapon that can inflict nice damage on it. And I don´t want to mention the dificulty of the search for souls and items... In this game, Luck Manipulation is tough. And I´ve noticed that if there´s SRAM in the vbm file, it must works perfectly on ALL versions of the game, since all accept the same SRAM.

For the record, this doesn't make sense in general. The different versions would still need identical timing for a movie to really work in all of them. Make sure to post a WIP here or at least show your progress to someone if you start actually making any progress, so someone can verify where the SRAM you're using came from and/or let you know whether what you've done so far looks OK.

I could've been much more brutal in criticism, but I couldn't be bothered. Anyways, I'd reccomend you scrap your run in the version of vba you are using, which is likely to be 15, and upgrade to 17.1. 15 fucks up the sram somewhat (in this game at least), which is -clearly- visible when you check out the soma file. I was able to do over 14,000 damage with the black panther soul to manticore 0_o when i tried it out, even though the sram was fine when i recorded initially. That problem isnt present in the latest version.

I´ve made this run with VBA 1.7.2.560. My saved game is totally absurd because I wanted to start making my run ASAP and I didn´t have a finished game. So, I just did a quick cheat search to find the address of the short sword, and then I opened the memory viewer and replaced lots of bytes with 63 (what made me have 99 of most things and extreme attributes) But I´ve never touched the SRAM.

I´ve made that TAS the fast I could. As you can easily notice, I´ve not put lots of thought into it. Now I´m working on the definitive one. But I´ll only show it when it´s finished. The new one is totally different from that old one.

The general idea for submissions is that we are supposed to play the hardest difficulty that comes from box settings. Anything less is usually rejected, and anything harder that requires SRAM is usually frowned upon because it isn't reliable. The reason that people are averse to you making a hard run is not because it will be slower or whatever, it's probably because our rules, although ammendable, don't accept any movies that need special treatments.

No, my argument against using the hard mode in this particular game is that it doesn't alter the game in any fundamental way which would make it more interesting in tool-assisted context. The fact that hard mode offers almost nothing compared to normal in this game, makes it a bad choice. Sure, you can pick up more stuff from the castle when going through it. Except that you don't in a TAS. Bosses have more HP so they take longer to kill. That would be good if the game was played in real time. In TAS, you basically repeat the same combination of moves until the boss dies. More HP makes it longer, thus repetitive and uninteresting. And then there's the SRAM. SRAM's aren't usually accepted, so you need to get excepted from the rule for your movie to get accepted.

The Gunstar Heroes run uses normal difficulty because it says hard doesn't change anything except prolonging the boss fights. If you can show how hard difficulty makes your run different from the normal run (e.g. are there any route changes required? Do enemies have attacks that are harder to dodge? etc) it may stand a chance of being accepted but if it uses exactly the same route and techniques as the currently accepted run while taking longer on the bosses (generally less entertaining) and adding SRAM it'll be rejected. If it doesn't get cathegorically rejected because of using SRAM.

In that example I think it's not enough justification to not play on hard mode. Maybe if the bosses had long invulnerability periods and still took more hits, but in that game the bosses were short enough already in either mode. In this case, hard mode isn't available from the start, so it'll take more justification than "hard mode is better". If you (pirate_sephiroth) don't want to explain it anymore, you could show some of the progress you've made already so people can judge whether it's really different enough. Since you're new to TASing and have stated that you don't like perfection in these movies, it doesn't seem likely that what you do initially on your own will be accepted.

Gunstar Heroes is a completely different case, and that hard mode comments may apply there. Castlevania is an action game with RPG elements. In Gunstar, you have the same weapons from the beggining to the end of the game, and that´s all. In Castlevania you may grow stronger by defeating great enemies. But in hard mode that strategy will change, since if a certain enemy gets too strong, it should not be worth the time it´ll be spent to slay it. But you still need the exp so maybe you can get it from various weak enemies instead of a single one. That changes the gameplay.

STRAIGHTFORWARD this time: If 10 guys play Aria, and finish the game, 9 will certianly say "Wow, really cool game... but... perhaps it should be a little harder?" What I´m trying to say is that Normal mode in this game equals to EASY mode, or PRACTICE mode. Just like a training for the Hard one, which is the real thing.

I assume you meant the hp values. Well, that's 97A75343 in hex... so it's theoretically possible for the game to allow you to have that much hp via codebreaker (etc) although if I had to guess; it seems more likely to be a photoshop. I really wouldn't expect the game to have that much of the data devoted to your hp when it could never reach that high anyway. It would seem like 65535 would be the cap without seriously screwing things up by doing a hex edit and inserting new data... but I've never done that so I do not know how possible it would be. I know my hex editor can insert new lines of data; but it seems like that would mess with the games routines. Just my 2 cents anyway...
