1) Have you seen GuanoBowl's work with this? His thread about MSX for FBA is on the same page as this one. 2) Your avatar is probably too big to be kosher by board standards. Also, you aren't from Eagleland, liar.

Just got done watching it. Lots of improvements needed. My hostage rescue was I think, faster than your non-hr. You picked up enemy chaser and used it in the wrong place (it hit the missles instead of the guys). I can do stage 1 for you and show you what needs to be done for a good run.

Yea, I definatley had mistakes and its labeled a test run for a reason. I ended up with grenades left over at the end I should have used some for the first helicopter and truck. I think stage 2 is pretty spot on for the exception of the boss. Im not gonna be spending too much time on it as I saw FBA runs are not accepted here (for silly reasons at that).

REALLY silly reasons too. I understand their need for the "from power-on" but everything else is....silly.

If someone ever decides to take this up, I honestly feel a Points run showing off every last possible secret and maximizing points as best as possible would be the most entertaining. I say this from watching a Metal Slug 3 player continually obliterate the game to higher and higher heights till he started getting past 10 Million points. Despite the length, it was a nonstop fascinating watch to say the least! That and there's so many hidden goodies, it'd be entertaining on that merit as well. Mind you, it'd have to be done on Difficulty Level 8 to max points. [Lots more gems worth big points are found] Just my 23 cent dream. Mr. Kelly R. Flewin

Any links to those movies Mr. Kelly R. Flewin? I was thinking about looking into the PSX version, but was told the arcade version was the way to go. I've never played the game, so I'd probably have to go through at least 2 test runs, but I have a feeling it'd be worth it. Also, any thoughts about a 2 player run?

I agree, the Metal Slug series should definitely be played with a "100%" goal (as, all hostages, all secrets, all kills), with two players.

Max points is an interesting goal that I hadn't considered. Of course, you'd need to ignore the sections where infinite enemies spawn. Or do they not count towards your score? I found this on YouTube, which is a deathless run that seems to be fairly well-made (judging from the first level; haven't watched the rest).

He is missing the two excellent ngcp games. I say go for two players, even if it's slower ( witch I don't think it will be ) it doubles the entertainment.

Double player may increase the on-screen lag when both of them are shooting a lot of bullets/bombs, but definitely makes bosses and hard enemies much faster. That, and more entertainment, yes.

I am going to work on this game. Before I do, please tell me if there are any tricks to be known as I have played this game only a few times on a real arcade machine :)

There's a bunch of hidden bonuses, but to my knowledge no "hidden techniques" except for the ability to become fat.

No idea how 'basic' you mean, so just incase... When using the pistol if you duck when firing you have a faster firing rate. When in the Standard Metal Slug when ducking you throw bombs rather than firing the cannon. You get some invincible frames when jumping out of (and into?) a slug. Might not be the case with the cammel though. Becoming fat, ("uh oh, Big!") has no downsides. In fact its a good thing as your weapon power increases. (No idea by what factor though.) ... What goals do you have in mind for your run?

Thanks Paused & Derakon. I guess my main goal is an any% run/fastest completion using "only" one player. I would've loved start working today but I keep getting this message even though I have tried using different ROM's :( "mslugx.zip was found (roms\mslugx.zip). neogeo.zip was found (roms\neogeo.zip). The following ROMs are invalid: • essential BIOS program ROM sm1.sm1 has a CRC of 97CF998B (correct is 94416D67). • essential BIOS ROM 000-lo.lo is 64k which is too small (correct is 128kB). • essential BIOS program ROM sm1.sm1 has a CRC of 97CF998B (correct is 94416D67). • essential BIOS ROM 000-lo.lo is 64k which is too small (correct is 128kB). • BIOS graphics ROM sfix.sfix was not found. The ROMset exhibits the following problems: • essential data is missing, the game will not run! • program data is invalid. • graphics data is missing."

FBA's original author says "you need to update your BIOS file". Apparently the neogeo.zip you want is about 2 MB.

So apparently I was more or less forced by general consensus by judges to do a 2-player run if I wanted to avoid rejection. I am hugely offended by this but thats not the point, seems like my keyboard cannot handle multiple input at the same time (for instance, sometimes I have to shoot horizontal while holding left + right + jump + fire button + frame advance = controlling 2 players, which my keyboard cannot handle) so I have no chance of doing a 2 player run. I was progressing nicely with my 1-player run but no point in continuing that now.

You can always remap certain keys to overlap functions. Say, if you need both characters moving to the right while jumping, have right and jump for both on the u (for example). It allows you to input multiple commands without overloading your keyboard.

If there are any windows programmers following this, it wouldn't be hard to hack together a serviceable auto-hold feature through AutoHotkey. A table of booleans* mapped to player 2's keys, which are toggled when pressing said keys on the physical keyboard. The frameadvance key would be mapped to scan the table and send the necessary keys with the frameadvance. A little UI window indicates what's held. *Loosely speaking, obviously. I know AHK has neither proper tables nor static types.

Autohotkey can easily do auto hold without getting to complex. It would just look like this.
!1:: ; auto hold for key 1
Send, {1 Down}
return
When you press alt 1 it will keep the button held down and then you do the frame advance like this.
\:: ;frameadvance unhold
Sleep, 100
Send, {1 up}
;all the other buttons you have an hold script for
return
it shouldn't be too hard to add a ui from there if you wanted it. If you held the button it error then just pressing 1 would unhold it
