I dont know if its even possible to play this game in this emulator, but I think it would be cool with a GTA2 TAS on the PSX. What do you guys think? (Im not gonna make one, Im just posting this to wake som discussion)

Come back here in 10 years, when PCSX2 will support re-recording. Also by that time, any run-of-the-mill PCs will run it at full speed.

Just telling him that GTA2 was on the old PSX and not on PS2 was too easy, was it?

In several guides, they mention the best way to complete this game is to alternate between the gangs missions. For example, loonies green missions then zaibatsu green missions. I may try it out to see how good this game looks...

By what I know (it's what I did in the past), the fastest way would be: 1 - begin the game (hahaha) 2 - go get the free war tank (in the first city I remember he is more or less on the right diagonal inferior part of the map) 3 - keep destroying cars and the police, killing everyone you see until you get the necessary money to go to the next city. (it will take some 4 or 5 minutes by what i remember) 4 - in the second and third city do the same. 5 - done. (yeah, unfornatelly the necessary to beat this game is only money, not missions acomplished) or... you decide to finish the game without the tank

Personally I think it would get boring to see someone just destroy as much as possible, but doing missions while bringing on some cop action would be awesome.

This is the best way to get the most money on the long run, but this requires a lot of shuffling around respect by killing gangsters and driving all the way across the town several times (which takes a long time).

Without multipliers this will take way too long, and it's also very repetitive. I think the best way to do it is to focus on only one gang: 1st green mission: $20000 2nd green mission: $20000*2 (total $60000) 1st yellow mission: $40000*3 (total $180000) 2nd yellow mission: $40000*4 (total $340000) and then either the 1st red mission or the 3rd yellow mission; both give enough cash to go past $500000, which I believe is the minimum necessary in the PSX version to complete the level. Here's a quick WIP I made, doing the first two Yakuza missions.

I'm now making a serious run of this game: Here's a new WIP, which is 739 frames faster than the previous WIP. Most improvements come from better luck manipulation (better cars, causing cops to show up more) and improved routes. I did waste time inputting a player name and setting the game's SFX volume to max (so you can hear sfx like cop sirens better) - but this only takes around 50-60 frames, so it's not much of a loss.

We had these games when I was younger, and I always wondered what a 100% run would entail.

It tried a console speedrun of this game at one point. Basically my idea was to complete 1-2 missions and then go rampage with the tank. It didn't actually take very long. I think I managed to find a mission WITH the tank use previously. I beat the first level in ~8 minutes if I am remembering right. However, this was with just much tank rampage. I think the game would take probably 25 minutes or so by doing maybe 8 missions or so total and then just rampaging. Not sure how entertaining that would eb though.

WIP on YouTube This is the WIP posted above, encoded for scrimpeh. If I recall correctly I have some more progress, but that's on another PC which I don't have easy access to. The TAS is cancelled so far, by the way, because of background music issues. (The run also was not very optimized and seems technically improvable.) PSXjin hasn't fixed the BGM issue yet, as far as I know. [EDIT] I found a real time speedrun of the PC version of the game, by MolotokCocktail. See the first part here. It contains some interesting routes and ideas: -Downtown District (06:46) 1. Complete the Radio Za-Za mission (one of the green Loonie missions) 2. Shoot down Zaibatsu until Yakuza respect is maxed out 3. Complete the Get Zitzaki mission (one of the green Yakuza missions). 4. By level 4 cop level attained during 2 and 3, steal a SWAT Van 5. Complete the SWAT Van Swipe mission (first red Yakuza mission, just requires you to deliver a SWAT Van, which the player already has) 6. Complete the Stop the Tank mission (second red Yakuza mission). By now, player has about $500000 and multiplier x5. 7. Steal a bus, and load it full with people. (Move the camera to manipulate civilians to appear on the bus stop) 8. Rig the bus with a car bomb, and park it onto the road, next to more cars and civilians. 9. Trigger the car bomb. Player gets Expeditious Execution bonus, gaining 5x$100000, so the money count reaches 1 million, enough to complete Downtown. The player reached this in 06:46 realtime. However, this route is not possible on the PSX version, because there don't seem to be buses in the game. It's also slower to perform some of the strategies, because the PSX version is changed to have less people and cars appear, making getting a level 4 Wanted level and getting a SWAT Van to appear harder. -Residential District (07:40) 1. Collect the four Multiplier+1's on the map. Multiplier turns to x5. 2. Get 7 of the 8 hidden Wang Cars. 3. Save and reload the game to refresh the Wang Cars and Multiplier+1's. 4. Collect the four Multiplier+1's on the map again. Multiplier turns to x9. 5. Get three of the refreshed Wang Cars to get Wang Car Bonus three times (3x$100000x9=$2700000). 6. Wreak havoc with the Wang Car Bonus Tank until you reach $3000000, which is enough to complete Residential. EDIT EDIT: This isn't possible on the PSX version either. Ugh, PSX version sucks. -Industrial District (27:23) Just plain doin' missions here, which as you might guess takes much longer than the other two districts.

Background issues even occur on epsxe. I think there are different iso versions of GTA 2 on the internet.

Sorry to burst it, but neither Buses nor Wang Cars are in the PSX Version :/

Well, I'll just have to stick to doing missions, then.

The WIP was really good. I think a 100% missions run of this could be interesting.

Whoah. That was actually an amazing WIP. As tough as this game might be to TAS, I'd really like to see it done.

I'm continuing to try finding potential routes that just depend on missions to get enough money in the Downtown District. Currently I have this route, basically doing most of the Yakuza missions: 1) Get Zitzaki (+$20,000x1, multiplier x2) ($20,000 total) 2) Bank Robbery (+$20,000x2, multiplier x3) ($60,000 total) 3) Follow that Traitor (+$40,000x3, multiplier x4) ($180,000) 4) Get Gama Rei (+$40,000x4, multiplier x5) ($340,000) 5) SWAT Van Swipe (+$60,000x5, multiplier x6) ($640,000) 6) Stop the Tank (+$60,000x6) ($1,000,000). Doing two green, two yellow, two red missions nets exactly 1 million dollars. The only notably difficult part in this route is getting a SWAT Van for SWAT Van Swipe. The rest shouldn't be too hard; most of the missions are pretty short. I'll try to think of some Residential and Industrial routes later. These'll be quite a bit harder, if only because of much more money needed ($3,000,000 for Residential, $5,000,000 for Industrial). EDIT: I did some calculations, after getting all four Multiplier+1's in Residential, doing all 7 missions of one gang would net exactly $3,000,000. I have no idea whether this is a coincidence or not.

I really enjoyed that WIP. I love that switch to the cop car after the mission completed!

I loved your WIP, you really ought to continue working on this. :) Seeing you drive at top speed and practically launching yourself out of your car upon exiting is hilarious. And it's pretty hard to do in real time.

Posting here just because I've been theorizing over a Residential District route today. Multipliers, like seemingly anything else, don't appear in the PSX version. This means that I can't use them to finish with just seven missions - I need more than that. I calculated that I need to do 3 green missions, 4 yellow missions and 3 red missions. I determined the following route: Blow Job > Science Friction > Fake Truce > LaBrat's Plan > Greatest Hits > Redneck Attack > Valdez Alert > Murder in the Mall > Gang Car Bang > Distraction Action. As you may see, there's quite a bit of respect-hopping in this one. I colored the missions, signifying the gang (blue=rednecks, dark grey=zaibatsu, dark yellow=scientists) and the difficulty (green=1 respect needed, yellow=3 respect needed, red=5 respect needed). However, I don't think the respect hopping is going to be much of a problem.

Wow, that WIP looks awesome! It's too bad the PS version is so watered down compared to the PC... but, hey, that means there will be more missions to watch, so I guess that's a plus.

I made a TAS of the Alma Mater Return (aka. Penal Ties) mission for fun. As for the full run, I'm waiting until PSXjin has a skip lag frames option so I can feasibly work on it without too much annoyance.
