I was searching for a TAS of H.E.R.O. but couldn't find it, then I noticed there isn't an Atari section at all on tasvideos... Could someone point me out to a TAS of that game if there is any hidden somewhere? Is there a specific reason for not having an Atari section, or it is simply lack of intrest? Would it be possible for a total newb to do something like that, or the tools are missing too?

The Atari games are a bit simple and uninteresting, but I suppose if you really want to, youtube would be a good place to start.

More to the point, there does not exist an emulator for the early Atari consoles with features comparable to those found in the emulators used to make the movies here.
I make a comic with no image files and you should read it. While there is a lower class, I am in it, and while there is a criminal element I am of it, and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free. -Eugene Debs

It's a pity indeed in that not even does www.longplays.net have Atari 2600 videos.

now, I've noticed that Stella doesn't even have a recording function :| while I'd prefer something that runs under OSX, I still have an old PC. So, are there any emulators for linux or win xp that despite lacking more advanced features have at least the bare minimum to get started?

One thing that occurred to me is that there are Atari emulators for GBA and probably DS. You may be able to then emulate the emulator in VBA or desmume. This has been done before for SMS and it was decided that it would not be acceptable for publication on the site, but that's probably your best bet for hacking something together (short of adding rerecording features to an existing emulator). I may try this out myself, being interested in seeing Atari runs as well...

I have never got an Atari emulator to work on the nintendo DS. I too am eagerly waiting for a re-recording Atari 2600 emulator. I think there is a speedrun of HERO on SDA though. edit: No, there isn't.

I noticed that the recording function was there but it's disabled, I've contacted the developer and we'll see if something can be done.

I'd also point out that many Atari 2600 games don't have an actual ending so we'd be fairly limited for what games can be TASed. Off the top of my head, Adventure and Pitfall II would work and I can't think of anything else.

There's a precedent of published movies that just go up to the point of levels repeating (Urban Champion off the top of my head). Not saying that every game would be suitable, but lack of ending shouldn't be a problem if the game looks good otherwise.

in my opinion, only games with an ending are worth TASing. yeah most atari games don't, but I'm basically doing it just for H.E.R.O. ^_^ btw I guess crystal castles, vanguard, q*bert and many other either have an ending or at least reach a point where they plainly start back from the beginning.

Some users requested this game, so I'm making a TAS. This won't be a long project. I've decided to do Level 1 to Level 20. That covers all the levels. WIP (Level 1 to Level 12): http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/4890752959641505 ROM filename: H.E.R.O.# A2600.A26
