Battletoads (1991) is a futuristic beat-'em-up game that is known for its graphics and extreme difficulty. The story is that the sexy Dark Queen who wants to rule the universe has kidnapped Princess Angelica and a toad named Pimple. Two other toads, Rash and Zitz, attempt to rescue them and defeat the Dark Queen. This single-player attempt uses warps.
Maybe you thought Battletoads was a game full of amphibians, but it is actually full of bugs. Those beta testers really should have spent a little more time on this game...

Another movie that's so fast you can hardly see what's going on. The main character can use his rocket dash to inflict a lot of damage on his opponents as well as bounce off walls and ceilings. nitsuja's movie is an incredible improvement to the previously published version. Cutting off 5 minutes is no easy task in a platform game such as this. Like the previous movie, this is played at the hardest difficulty, crazy hard.

As always, a bug on level 11 prevents player 2 from moving, so he gets a game over for that level. Player 1 plays level 11 alone and player 2 comes back for level 12. This is a bug in Battletoads itself.

Here you can see a revision of this game by nitsuja, 04:35.32 minutes faster than the previous run by mazzeneko. The strategy used was changed radically, using Raphael instead of Donatello and using dash moves more often.
The damage for every move was mapped out carefully by monitoring the internal values of the RAM, to be able to choose the best attack for every situation. Luck was manipulated to make some enemies appear in more convenient positions.

Ecco is a very original and hellishly hard game. You control Ecco the dolphin, navigating the waters, saving other trapped dolphins (which of course were left on their own here), finding key diamonds, schools of fish and pockets of air deep down in submarine caves.

The average character movement speed in this movie is probably the highest of all the movies on this site.

This game has many qualities that make it a good candidate for TASing. These include nice and soft graphics, music that's not painful to listen to and, of course, a very speedy main character.
The game is not meant to be quite as straightforward as it would seem by watching this movie, as the author takes many shortcuts that require extremely precise jumping. A downside to this game is that the bosses sometimes have long invulnerability periods, meaning that Zero has to wait a bit in-between hits and cannot spam the bosses with 20 hits per second.

Knuckles' Chaotix is a Sonic game that doesn't feature Sonic. The story follows Knuckles the Echidna as he tries to save his friends from Dr. Robotnik, one at a time, by tying an elastic band of "ring energy" between himself and each of them.
The gameplay is similar to that of earlier Sonic games, and after each stage, the next level is selected via roulette. These roulettes and the game's cutscenes comprise about 66% of the total movie length, so we recommend skipping through them.
In the site's first 32X publication, Upthorn uses a number of glitches (of which the most prominent is zipping through walls) to complete most of the levels tens of seconds faster than intended.

Frenom: I got the original of this game and I cant even make it to the next level without dying on Easiest.

This Sonic Advance movie is unique as a speedrun in one aspect: the hero (Sonic) moves so fast that the "camera" of the game cannot even follow him. Therefore, Sonic is rarely seen in the movie.
On the rare occasions we get to watch Sonic, we get to enjoy seeing him moving through walls, charging up for another dash, or making short work of bosses.
Besides the super fast speed itself, the speed also provides Sonic an ability (glitch) to pass through platforms and walls under certain conditions.
Note: this run has two AVIs available for download. The second one is normal, 57.9 MB in size and shows the movie including the credits and all. The first one is 73.8 MB in size and shows two screens side by side — the one on the left is identical to the normal version; the one on the right is made with a special emulator, hacked to force the game's camera to focus on Sonic, making it much easier to follow what nitsuja is doing with him. Unlike the first video, this version doesn't show the credits and anything following them.

This movie is Baxter's new and improved version, which is an astounding 4 minutes faster than his previous version. Emulation of this game is not correct. Lag present on the SNES is not represented in this run. Expect the speed to be higher than actually seen on a real console. A rare instance of a Japanese-made NES game based on a U.S.-originated comic book, Bucky O'Hare (1992) provides a player with a good combination of platforming action similar to Mega Man, an interesting plot, and convincing production values. You can play as one of the five unique characters, which you are free to select at any time, after saving them from the clutches of the Toad Empire. Each character has special abilities required to take advantage of in order to pass through the game's numerous variably designed stages, ranging from single-screen puzzle rooms to autoscrolling shoot-'em-ups.
Interesting fact about this game is that Konami used to implement unconventional ways of piracy protection, in this particular case by making each hit or an otherwise harmful collision in the game result in an instant death if you play it illegitimately. Apparently, this was how a large amount of people were used to playing it in pre-emulation era, without ever finding out Konami's little sabotage.
This movie by AnS is set up in a fashion that imitates this handicap by playing the game in hard mode (accessing it through a password), where every hit results in death. James Pond 3: Operation Starfish (1993) is a platform game starring a super agile fish named James Pond, which has been Amiga's somewhat preemptive answer to Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario World games. The physics of this game allow for many interesting acrobatics, like running up the walls and ceilings at breakneck speed. As such, these abilities are abused to the point where, in some parts, Pond bounces around as fast as Sonic does.
Following the game's plot, the evil Dr. Maybe attempts to take over the dairy industry, for which he constructs a giant stronghold on the Moon. Because, as you probably know, its surface is made of cheese. The overworld map spans over 100 levels, but most of them are optional.

Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers 2 is quite an improvement over the original Chip 'n Dale in terms of graphics and a whole lot of other things. Thankfully, the original game's solid controls haven't been changed. The plot of this game is that Fat Cat has stolen the Pharaoh's Urn and wants to use its power (for evil purposes, of course).
Like the first movie, a two-player run makes for some interesting things, like Chip and Dale carrying each other around, and heavy abuse of death to take advantage of balloons. By killing off one character, he respawns on a floating balloon, thus going ahead of the other character. Unlike the first, however, this run frequently destroys bosses by using one of the characters as a weapon. Only in the Chip 'n Dale series can such apparently irrational action be justified.

Dr. Robotnik is at it again, and this time he has set up a Pinball Defense System inside of a volcano. Fortunately, Sonic makes a good pinball and he easily infiltrates the system, recovering most of the chaos emeralds hidden within and making short work of the bosses.
The author has improved this run by nearly 2 minutes over his previous. Improvements come from new shortcuts & glitches discovered by the author & Flip. For instance, Flip demonstrated in this submission how to skip collecting emeralds in the first stage.

A very important part of Nintendo's history is being presented here in the manner of our website — as a tool-assisted speedrun.
Donkey Kong Jr. (read Wikipedia article), among with Donkey Kong, were classic games that were played by millions of players on different consoles, including NES, Atari 2600 and Game and Watch.
Although one would not expect a movie of Donkey Kong Jr. to be interesting to watch, except in the retro sense, this movie is actually quite surprising. The vines are cleverly utilized to move the hero forward faster than any member of the Kong family before or after this game.
This is a 6 frame optimization of level 4 compared to the previous movie by the same authors. The rest of the levels are copied without changes.

Garfield and Odie broke the TV. After they "fix" it, the "spare parts" from the TV turn into a monster and suck Garfield and Odie into the TV! With cat-like reflexes, Garfield defeats the monster (known as Glitch) in short order by, among other things, manipulating luck and taking damage to save time!

Released as part of the mostly Game Boy Mickey Mouse series, Mickey Mouse III: Dream Balloon was released in September 1992 by Kemco in Japan for the Famicom. Due to copyright issues it was changed into Kid Klown in Night Mayor World for its US NES 1993 release. In this run, Mickey uses balloons as weapons, as platforms, and as floatation devices to make quick work of the stages.

Mr. Nutz is a happy-go-lucky anthropomorphic red squirrel who saves the world from Mr. Blizzard who, apparently, is trying to turn the world into ice, possibly to combat global warming.
DaTel237 skillfully controls Mr. Nutz by making him hop like a jack rabbit on speed, throwing acorns all over the place and avoiding pesky coins whenever possible. A number of tricks and glitches are used, including floor zipping.

The Lion King is about a lion who becomes king. It takes about 17 minutes and is mostly paperwork, but it does involve some prancing around the Pride Lands.
Mukki manages to complete the game (and, subsequently, expedite the process of becoming king) over 30 seconds faster than the previous movie. The author does this using tricks such as catching ledges and glitching past leopards.
We have a TAS of the SNES port here.

In Duck Tales 2, you control a duck who can use his cane as a pogo stick. He and his family (the NPCs that this run does not talk to except once when forced) search for hidden treasures around the world.
The author, adelikat, completes this game a little more than 5 seconds faster than the previous movie by himself and Brushy. The biggest time-saver was skipping a cutscene in level 1. Expect a lot of pogo action, jumping from ropes and hooks and across spikes unharmed, and quick beatdown of bosses.
This movie does not get the best (100%) ending, but also does not get the worst (no money).

Ludicrous-speed bouncing around. Completed without collecting any emeralds, with both Sonic and Tails controlled by the player.
This run takes everything you know about Sonic and Knuckles and turns it upside-down. It extensively uses the "scroll objects offscreen to pass through them" trick to zip and warp to places that shouldn't be reached, break bosses, and effectively skip entire stages.
It is worth noting that nitsuja did not directly participate in the creation of this movie; instead, upthorn incorporated newly discovered tricks in several stages and spliced them in for a total improvement of 49 seconds.

This run illustrates very well the advantage of using two-player mode. Much faster than the single-player version, Chip and Dale carry each other, throw each other, abuse balloons and zip as they once again go after Fat Cat.
The improvement by dragonxyk comes now with Chip and Dale zipping on each other.
Watch this run being played back on a real console.

This game is an adaptation of the cartoon Wacky Races. Instead of playing as the hero, the main character is the dog sidekick of the villain Dick Dastardly.
The author deftly controls Muttley the dog as he runs, jumps and glides his way to boss fights with various other racers in their sometimes quirky cars.

Ecco: The Tides of Time (1994) is the sequel to Ecco the Dolphin. It is harder than the original, and continues its bizarre science fiction plotline. You control Ecco the dolphin, navigating the waters, circumnavigating the time-stream, saving lost DNA nucleotide pairs, and finding key crystals, schools of fish and pockets of air deep down in submarine caves.
Ecco is capable of moving at very high speed but has little in the way of brakes. Turning corners without smashing into walls is tricky to say the least.
This run plays on the hardest difficulty mode.

Sonic the Hedgehog CD was developed to showcase a new Genesis/Mega Drive peripheral, the Sega CD. Likewise, this movie is the first of its kind on TASVideos and showcases the newly updated Gens emulator that allows for making stable movies of Sega CD games.
The game is markedly different than other Sonic games; aside from "improved" graphics and sounds, each level has 2 to 4 alternate versions that correspond to different time periods. Sonic can move between them to affect the gameplay and ending.
This run is approximately 37 seconds faster than upthorn and nitsuja's previous run thanks to various optimization and minor route changes. For more information on the improvements, the BIOS files used and a run for the Japanese version of the game, please read the author's submission notes.
There are two video encode files, the first recorded with the Japanese region music and the second with the American region music.
This movie has an Atlas Map encode of Zone 2 of Palmtree Panic, which shows the standard encode overlaid on a zoomed out map.

Bubsy is on a hunt to get back his yarn, which the Woolies stole.
Bubsy can run very fast, but unfortunately he almost never gets a chance to, because there are obstacles everywhere. Unlike most bobcats, Bubsy can die by touching anything remotely dangerous, like eggs or water. Also unlike regular bobcats, he can glide through the air, has a t-shirt with an exclamation mark, and a smile you'll just be dying to wipe off his face.
