For Disney's Aladdin (Genesis) there's a glitch that allows attract mode to progress the game. It doesn't save time RTA, but if you end timing on last input a route is possible that looks like this: 1) approx 2-4 seconds of menu inputs 2) done with inputs, TAS timing is over 3) idle at the menu for approximately 2 real-time hours while attract mode slowly progresses the game and eventually triggers the ending I assume this would prompt you to change the timing mechanism for this game, rather than accept this run? (Run by me forthcoming on this topic, obviously this is really easy to generate if you only need to TAS out a couple seconds of menu inputs)

End-of-movie time is only considered a stylistical choice, and not an actual end-all be-all of TAS movie time comparison. TAS time comparison is typically done through comparing gameplay segments. Therefore, even if input only lasts a few seconds, the movie would be considered to fail to beat existing unassisted and TAS records. Also, depending on the specifications of the glitch, it would possibly be rejected for being trivial as well. It would make an interesting joke submission, though, (at the right time), and possibly spawn some nice philosophical discussion about the timing of runs. Ultimately I don't see it coming through, though.

Alright, thanks for the quick response. It's possible to potentially actually save time with this trick while still playing through a substantial portion of the game so I'll investigate that avenue further

It has been said that Vault does not allow dirty SRAM. However, if I make a Castlevania Portrait of Ruin Sister Mode run that starts from clean SRAM(parts of mtbRc's input might be used), would it be eligible for Vault?

No, because then you would be starting the default game mode, and completing something else instead would disqualify it as any%.

Is it a problem if do a movie with 2 controllers enabled,even though i'll probably not use the second character at all,cause i'll have to test if it saves time in specific places?
TAS i'm interested: Megaman series, specially the RPGs! Where is the mmbn1 all chips TAS we deserve? Where is the Command Mission TAS? i'm slowly moving away from TASing fighting games for speed, maybe it's time to start finding some entertainment value in TASing.

No problem, although it's preferred (but not required) to clean up the movie input file and remove unused controllers after completing the run. (As long as that doesn't affect sync on the run.)

Extract the .lsmv with an archiver tool (e.g. 7zip, winrar) and you'll see an input log file - clean out all but the first set of inputs (you may want to need some good text editing tool for this, such as Notepad++), save the file, and pack it back into a .lsmv file again. Also update the port1/port2 files (see Wiki: Lsnes/MovieFormat for more on that). If you have issues following any of these steps, it's fine to not bother. I'll stress again that this is optional.

The run [2599] A2600 Seaquest by morningpee in 01:39.80 relies on a glitch that is the result of emulation error. I plan to submit a run to obsolete that one that doesn't use the glitch. However, I saw a lot of discussion on that movie's thread about goal choice, ending, and branch name, and I wasn't really sure what the ultimate conclusion was. Should the existing run still be held in 'moons' or is it actually in the vault? What kind of run would I have to submit to obsolete that one? Does it have to be a 'max score' run or could it be a 'no new content' run? (A max score run would likely just be repeating the highest scoring pattern every level until the end which would be about 25 minutes of repeated play.)

By administrative consensus in the discussion topic of that movie, it does not qualify for Vault completion criteria. Even with the relatively new Vault rules on max score, it fails to qualify for the criteria on full completion. So, the movie will be held in Moons. For a new movie, to be publishable in the Vault it should conform to the "no new content" rules. Such a movie, with accurate emulation, would obsolete the published one regardless of time, considering both the ending issues and emulation issues surrounding the published run.

I TASed Harvest Moon on SNES in any% with a password to reach the end of the game on the first day. My TAS with password : Link to video The any% of the game without this password takes ~40 mins to end and the only thing you do is to sleep as fast as possible each morning after eating your breakfast, so it's very repetitive.... Only 5 days are special and you can't go sleeping without doing something. Current World Record without password : https://www.twitch.tv/videos/50429808 My questions are : Can I submit this any% with password ? Do I make this any% without password in any case or it can be rejected ?

Cheat codes and passwords are only allowed under select circumstances if it provides a good benefit towards the TAS' gameplay value, such as by unlocking a higher difficulty level. Aborting the game and skipping to the ending does not look like an acceptable reason. Note that if the game manual refers to the code as a normal way of playing, it's not counted as a cheat code. (But that does not appear to be the case in this instance). For reference, the specific movie rules in question are here.

Thank you for this answer even if you changed the "No skipping to the end with a password" section when I asked that 'kappa'. I understand and I agree this point of view so I'll do the "All days" TAS of the game even if I'll it will go for Vault tier... I don't care about this little TAS wich I use for all other TASes of the game.

Question: Am I really allowed to play SMS PAL games on NTSC mode if released in Brazil too? The rule says: "The Sega Master System is an unique system in that it can officially play PAL games at NTSC frequency in PAL-M regions (Brazil). Therefore, playing PAL games with NTSC settings is allowed for SMS games, but only if the game has a known official release in Brazil. More details about PAL-M here." However, I've found that there are issues with PAL games released in Brazil and playing them in 60hz. One of the benefits of this topic is that it forces us to take a good look at the rules, and how they should be applied, and what parts should be changed to reflect the current situation better. Outdated references about asking judges for conditions that never will be granted anymore are an example of such a needed change. That said, thanks for asking the question :)

First off, thanks for the research on this so far - this is a tricky topic and it's good to have more information in it so the rules can be refined better. Before I start changing the rules however, I would need to have some more concrete information to go off - ideally, behavior of PAL-M or PAL games on PAL-M systems should be analyzed and tested on hardware, so it can be confirmed whether or not the games run properly at 60Hz there, or whether or not such system/game combinations result in the mentioned input polling issues. Right now there's not enough information to tell if these issues are merely hardware quirks native to at least one region, emulation quirks, or actually caused by cross-region incompatible carts and systems. So until more information is known about that, I won't change the rules for this. I am looking forward to more research and input on this, however, so that a better-informed decision may be made in the future.

Hello, Is it allowed to use the SNES mouse for a SNES TAS ? If yes, is there a configuration i have to take on BizHawk (velocity and deadline) or I can choose it ? I ask because I don't think there is a mention of it in our rules and I didn't see any TAS with it. Thanks.

Yes, you can use the mouse and you can adjust the mouse offset however you like. After all, it's possible to reach these high values in unassisted play as well (you'd have to be really fast though).

To add to that, generally speaking, all input from any sort of input device is fair game (provided the emulator properly supports it). The only exception is input from expansion ports that are not intended for player input, but a peripheral like a mouse clearly does qualify. For more on that, read the linked submission judgment.

So in F-Zero Maximum Velocity there's more or less a bonus track that has its own separate mode with exclusive features such as the ability to save ghosts and replays. I'm planning on doing the rest of the tracks in one Grand Prix mode TAS but this one cannot be done in any other mode. Should I make this a separate TAS or tack it on to the end of my GP TAS? I'm personally leaning towards the former because it's completely separate and lacks a bunch of the things that makes grand prix mode interesting (cpu bumps and randomly placed mines) and if I tacked it onto the end of GP, I'd want to skip credits by doing a soft reset. I could move it to the front of my TAS to get around that last point but eh... Either way it would just feel awkward having it attached to the main TAS, but it should still deserve a branch nonetheless as it contains unique content.

Since it's a different mode with a different kind of content, I'd make it a separate TAS.

So in Mickey Mania for SNES, RTA runners will use Normal as the main difficulty setting. The only difference between easy and normal is the continues you start out with. In hard mode, the only difference is it removes checkpoints. and afaik, there's no useful death abuses that could save time. The checkpoints also dont slow down the run time in any way and the only reason it would be uses in RTA would be for safety. My question is since the only difference between normal and hard is the absence of checkpoints, would it still be required that I set the movie to play on hard mode? Edit: actually, Easy mode ends after a certain world, so it would be more ideal to do either normal or hard to show off the rest of the game.

Hard difficulty is always preferred unless there are definite gameplay reasons not to do it, so it would be best to go for that anyway. However, if the difficulty choice (between Normal and Hard) doesn't meaningfully impact the run, it won't be grounds for rejecting a movie either, so a Normal movie would still be publishable. Easy would not be accepted, as skipping levels is not considered a justification for using a lower difficulty setting. So I would recommend picking Hard, but Normal is also acceptable. Easy is not.

Reposting a question from the "Gotta catch 'em all" submission of Pokémon Blue: If someone submitted an Ocarina of Time 100% under the alternative ruleset, would it be considered legit?
