Super Arabian (スーパーアラビアン) is a platformer game in which the player assumes the role of an adventurous Arabian prince whose goal is to rescue the princess from her palace, by collecting pots scattered around for some reasons. During his quest, the prince will sail seas, crawl through caves, and fly magic carpets.
This run was completed a few years ago. It completes the "Level 8" stage set in 6482 frames.

Comments

On Level 8, lettered pots must be collected according to the order of the letters of the english word shown in the upper-right corner of the screen. Pots with the same letters can be interchanged, but in the only case on Stage 2 the order to collect the two "R" lettered pots doesn't matter as the frame length will be exactly the same according to my test.

Memory: The TAS seems fairly optimized. At first glance there would be confusion as to why it was routed the way it was, however on level 8 the pots must be collected in a specific order.
The main concern I had over the TAS was the usage of the level select to skip to the final stages. However, given the fact that the game has a clearly defined ending (rescuing the princess at the end of the last stage) and that this can be considered a gameplay feature, it is acceptable. Completing the game from level 1 can be considered a form of full completion.
While some tricks in the game are kinda neat, the TAS is fairly repetitive. While the posts in the thread were fairly positive, the votes were fairly mixed, with nearly as many "meh" votes as "yes" votes.
As such, accepting to Vault.

Currently Im drunk but who cares. On the video encode first level seems to be improvable. As I see, on the first level you purposely missed the platforns on the right side. Since you climb verzically fast,wouldnt it be faster to land on the right side and pick up what you originally pick last to final? And then go up, pick centers, pock left bottom. And i'm impressed about you submitting many NES TASes :)

Sorry I didn't know this game, and I have a question. Why you must run around for avoid monsters. Is not kill them will help faster?

All of the monsters in the run are manipulated to get out of my way. The route is optimal on every stage. If you are questioning about the beginning part of Stage 3, then yes, going left instead of right could let the hero get on the magic carpets. But that wouldn't save any time in the end because the hero would then have to wait extra time for the magic carpets after collecting the pot on the bottom of the stage till the same frame as in the current run. There are four ways to get rid of those standard monsters (a hidden hostile pot-genie with ranged attacks will pop up if you spend too much time on a stage) in the game:
    # To kick them. One Kick will send them out of the screen. # To let them walk out of the screen by themselves. # To let them land on a magic carpet and get carried out. # To let two of them randomly fuse into one big monster (can only occur when they overlap each other for some time) that throws itself at you, only to miss the target and flies all the way out.
In general, it takes time to kick monsters or avoid a fused one.

While the configuration of the pots are different among the 8 levels, other things such as the terrain and enemies are just the same. Such simple reconfigurations is a typical way to create difficulty levels in video games back in those days. Anyways it can be very easily resolved upon the fact that, in this game the goal is to rescue the princess ("アラビアンは、無事レイアを救い出すことができるのであろうか!?"), which is just done on the last stage and can be regarded as reaching the ending.

This game has a clear and obvious way to skip to the last level, which can also be seen not as gameplay level, but as difficulty level. The game allows you to rescue the princess even if you haven't played the previous levels, so avoiding them is just a matter of choice. Since playing through all the levels rewards the player with letters of a certain word, this looks like a good definition of full completion for this game, whoever feels like making it. This run though, looks pretty acceptable to me. Memory?
Warning: When making decisions, I try to collect as much data as possible before actually deciding. I try to abstract away and see the principles behind real world events and people's opinions. I try to generalize them and turn into something clear and reusable. I hate depending on unpredictable and having to make lottery guesses. Any problem can be solved by systems thinking and acting.
