http://tasvideos.org/Movies/GruefoodDelight.html I think only editors can put TASes here. It would go under 'Technical Foul' for being completed on an unaccepted emulator. (Unrelatedly, I think this section is getting big and can be split. Maybe into 'emulation problems' vs 'does something cheaty'.)

I had the same idea, and I've already found the responsable SRAM address to enter World A, but it's still too arbitrary goal for a warpless run. An FDS warpless run till World D is probably not a good idea because Mario has to game over at 9-1, return to the title screen, and use 8 stars from a save state or whatever to enter A-1. I have an idea and I'm working on it, but I'm leave you in suspense till I'm done. :)
I think as long as every level is completed contiguously besides the game over, it would be good enough (basically, it would be the least arbitrary way to achieve the goal of a warpless all levels category). But, I await to see what your idea is. :D

Those are decent TASes but won't be approved because people perfer the SNES version that shows World A-D. In my opinion, an FDS warpless run (till 9-4) can show several special endings (skipping castles) and some interesting routes (going through upside-down pipes).

You said "I'd like to see one, but TASVideos currently only approves warpless TAS of the SNES version from Super Mario All Stars, which forces Mario to go into the castle." Out of curiosity, where can I read about this ruling? EDIT: Spikestuff found it. http://tasvideos.org/2843S.html http://tasvideos.org/2874S.html http://tasvideos.org/3833S.html

I think dot eater, maximum score would be more interesting than dot eater, minimum score, deathless. But the most interesting part of dot eater, maximum score (having to time out the hardest boss attack in the game) is actually already done in the 2p, maximum score TAS, so there is not very much incentive to make a second category TAS.

People have been using different models of consoles, or even different consoles altogether, for ages in order to speed up loading times in video games. Why should time arbitrarily be lost just because they happen to have the best model of a computer for speedrunning? It would be like penalizing someone for running Crash Bandicoot on a PS2 just because the PS2 loads the game better then the original PS. It doesn't make any sense.
To clarify, my proposed timing scheme is the following: -In game time (loading times not counted), except... -...each time you load from a save, 100ms (or whatever) is added to your final time This is objective and fair and prevents quicksave spam abuse.

One solution is to make each save/load carry some arbitrary time penalty (anywhere from 10 milliseconds to 1000 milliseconds) such that you'd still do it everywhere where it saves a meaningful amount of time, but if it saves an insignificant amount of time you'd not bother.

We're decades to centuries away from being able to make an AI with a personal aesthetic taste (rather than just being able to data mine and make a neural network that creates an average image of something, for example), so don't hold your breath on it.

if you think Trump is responsible for the events, then surely Doom is responsible for shootings in schools, right?
It's not the same, is it? Trump knows that whoever he disses will get mobbed by his supporters, and he uses it on purpose as a weapon. Also, no comment on the rest of my post? Also, Milo is definitely a huge, attention seeking, transphobic asshole, so I wouldn't lend much credence to any opinion he has...

And even if you don't think that Trump being sexist/racist/etc is an issue, you must be worried by the fact that he thinks Global Warming is a scam, that he's OK with nuclear weapons escalation, that he sees it fit to promote and negotiate business deals while preparing to become the President, that he doesn't bother to go to intelligence briefings, that he's close friends with Alex Jones, that he'll post things on twitter that are factually false (causing people to get harassment, death threats, company stocks to plummet, etc. for no good reason), etc.

On one level, you can't blame people for using TASes for game footage, when TASVideos consistently has extremely high quality footage of games being played at a solid pace, whereas your average youtube playthrough might suffer from low quality, embarrassing mistakes, idle times, non-game content, etc. Of course, it would be nice to get credit! :) The EWJ2 footage seems to be not from the TAS, at least from comparing scenes quickly.

I'm inclined to agree with Patashu about the likelihood of us solving the hard AI problem; however, I also think that our existing "AIs" (expert systems, really) are going to get increasingly easier to create and more powerful, to the point that within a couple of generations, most humans that still have jobs will be largely busy with guiding or training new AIs rather than directly doing work themselves.
Definitely. And AIs are very much going to be a reflection of the culture and people who train them, because your choice of what data you put in and how you tweak the algorithms determines what comes out.

I don't believe there will be a technological singularity. Reasons: 0) We're not even close to coming up with a true artificial intelligence. A recurrent neural network can never suddenly become 'sentient' and reason about its own systems, for example. The things we're producing now are ultimately based on the code and hardware we're used to working on, and have no intrinsic relation with how the brain an artificial intelligence would need work. 1) Intelligence isn't some kind of 'slider' you can just grab and max out. Improving intelligence requires innovations, and there's no specific reason why an AI can find such innovations faster than us. 2) The hardware. Computer systems are ridiculously less efficient at processing data in a brain-like way than brains are, and it's not clear when we'll be able to match the performance of a brain. Once we can do that, and we understand how brains work, we can make an AI... As smart as a human. And it will probably take as long as a human to learn to be human-like, too. That's interesting, but not going to cause a singularity, especially since any further growth in intelligence will be limited by hardware (as well as other things!). (For example, it won't be able to spread from computer to computer and make itself intelligent using a botnet - for one, latency, for another, computers that aren't optimized to run AI will be useless for this purpose) 3) Evolution. Animals have evolved over billion years, especially ones like humans, and have eeked out every last drop of efficiency in things like the brain in the process. Since an AI is meant to work like and exceed the capabilities of a human brain, and we don't even understand how a human brain is as efficient as and does everything it does yet, it's quite unreasonable to think we'd be able to outdo what Mother Nature has been working on this entire time. 4) While a lot of things in science have been growing exponentially (Moore's Law, etc) - there are signs that this exponential growth may be tapering off, due to running into intrinsic limitations of physics. Any 'singularity' will no doubt run into similar problems - we might think something is becoming twice as intelligent each year, only for the growth to tail off when an intrinsic limit to the methods used is reached. I am open to being wrong, of course; it is possible I am not thinking on a large enough timescale. But it is certainly not inevitable that a singularity will happen, even so.

The Hearthsim IRC/Discord do exactly this, and it works fine. It means that if you sit in IRC you can log everything the way you normally would too, which is great.

gocha, have you tested the Ignis glitch on the sand fish boss (GRavedorcus)? When romscout does it, it causes weird visual glitches on the sand floor and tons of lag. Another interesting one is in Barlowe. It causes a background object to appear, and the cutscene after the boss fight ends doesn't play properly (screen remains black until you leave the area).

Sonic 2 isn't the only game to have leftover collectibles far out of the bounds of the level. Yoshi's Island also did it: https://tcrf.net/Super_Mario_World_2:_Yoshi's_Island#Shifting_Platforms_Ahead A lot of other platformers likely did too, but only in Sonic 2 does it really matter due to the goals of the 'Ring Attack'.
