<Now using the mGBA core, and more optimized than before. Re-record count is "unknown" because I experimented with using the rewind feature in BizHawk instead of the usual save states. Frame advace was also used.>

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: BizHawk 1.13.0

Comments

In this TAS I saved more frames by not having unnecessary frames after defeating bowser, and on the menus, though those could be improved a bit further.

Stage by stage comments

<Yoshi's Island 2>

Nothing to say here, other than now I am using the hopping glitch.

<Yoshi's Island 3>

Saved time by running from the start.

<Yoshi's Island 4>

Nothing to say other than the P-Switch dropping might've interferred with the speed although I am unsure.

<Iggy's Castle>

Used frame advance on the fence. Could've been slightly more frame perfect.

<Donut Plains 1>

Good overall, but could maybe use some polish at the very end.

<Donut Secret 1>

Better than my previous TAS, but still needs improvement.

<Donut Ghost House>

Boo spinjumping could maybe take less time... or not?

<Donut Plains 3>

A few frames saved.

<Donut Plains 4>

This one could have quite a few seconds saved, but... I just couldn't resist doing a full 1up combo just by stomping... well, uh, TASes are meant to be entertaining....... right?

<Morton's Castle>

Better springboard throwing? Not much to say here. I believe the boss fight was also improved a bit.

<Vanilla Dome 1>

A second (maybe more) saved.

<Vanilla Secret 1>

Entered pipe at 280! One second saved. But I still think it could be improved more.

<Star World 2>

Just normal. The end part could be better, with going up while holding blue baby yoshi.

<Star World 3>

This could maybe be improved by just a few frames but it is good overall.

<Star World 4>

Better & quicker Green Koopa strat. Though if the "faster" SNES strat CAN be achieved in here, as Luigi, then that should be used instead. This is the current strat for normal speedruns, however.

<Bowser's Castle>

Not much to be said here. Again, maybe just a few frames could be saved in this level as a whole (counting the boss).

Other comments

I made this shortly after discovering how to -actually- do the hopping glitch to go faster. I think it's a solid run, though it's one that still can be improved upon. Again, rewinds were used, other than save states, but if you counted every rewind press as a re-record then you would probably get a re-record count of between 200-500... or more... or less... I don't know lmao

Masterjun: <While this run might look optimized, it is not. As the author already noted, a lot of levels can be improved (and easily at that). My personal tip: When doing hopping glitch, you have to lock the highest speed value, otherwise you lose a significant amount of time. Use userfiles and ask for feedback in the game thread.>
Rejected.

still needs improvement

Why are you submitting movies that you know are not perfect? We reject runs that have obvious flaws and SMW is one of the highly optimized games (even the GBA port).
I think it's a solid run, though it's one that still can be improved upon.
The submission form is not for movies that are known to have improvements. Fog already told you on your last submission: Please make use of the userfiles and get feedback from fellow TASers before submitting again. If you would use userfiles and share it in the discussion thread of the game then you could get good feedback which you can use to improve to yourself and eventually submit a movie that actually has a chance of being published to the site! This run is not optimized enough, but it's clearly faster than your previous one, so you're already improving!

Well I don't really have a "base" to work with since no one made a low% run as Luigi before. So I thought at least this run could be the starting point. Also, this is irrelevant, but, if the submission form is not for movies that could be potentially improved then why does the default description form suggest writing about the things that could be improved in the "Other comments" section? EDIT: only saw the edited message now

It's for speculations for what could have been improved if, for example, other glitches were found or similar. It's not for things people were just too lazy to test.

For the last time, I want to see a TAS of this game in getting all the dragon coins, not some TAS with an arbitrary goal.

Generally things should only be left unimproved in a submitted TAS if it's difficult to actually make the improvements: -An optimization that was missed or discovered after you TASed that section, and would require more than a day's work to redo everything up to that point -A theoretical optimization that you have tried to achieve but cannot (RNG not lining up, not quite enough pixels/frames available, a new discovery must be made for it to be possible, etc) If the submission form doesn't make it clear what level of optimization is expected from submissions, perhaps a staff member should reword it so it's clearer what first time TASers should do?

I don't know, the submission form page clearly says Please read the Submission Instructions before submitting a movie. in which one of the first lines says Please ensure your movie is good. Do not waste the judges' time with movies that have obvious mistakes

so, could anyone (who did watch the movie, i'm not very good with descriptions so i'd disregard the per-stage comments) point out the flaws in it? i'm not claiming there is none, i just want to know so i can improve, of course

The route of Yoshi's Island 2 > Yoshi's Island 3 > Yoshi's Island 4 > #1 Iggy's Castle > Donut Plains 1 > Donut Plains 2 or Donut Secret 1 > Donut Ghost House > Donut Plains 3 > Donut Plains 4 > #2 Morton's Castle > Vanilla Dome 1 > Vanilla Secret 1 > Star World 2 > Star World 3 > Star World 4 > Front Door This 15 exit is arbitrary and sub-optimal compared to the 11-exit run. The P-Balloon can still be used in a small only run. Maybe if we have Yoshi eat a Chuck to get a goal orb in order to get 90+ exits (including the ? block glitch in the Top Secret Area)

11-exit can't be done small only as the first star world level has obligatory turn block spinjumping. and not sure if goal orb glitch is possible in the gba port. small only (aka low%) in speedruns also doesn't allow yoshi.

The "improvement" you just submitted to the usefiles shows the same length as this submission. Did you upload the wrong file, or did a judge already replace it?
