Here's another Sonic run, and an S3&K run at that. This time it's more of a cleanup run for the glitches I wasn't aware of than an actual redo, but at least the improvements were more than I expected (over a minute of in-game time).
LevelTimeUnits Improved
Hydrocity 20:5212
Icecap 11:0115
Lava Reef 11:048
Lava Reef 20:2130
Total23:0265 (1 minute and 5 seconds)
Hydrocity 2: The new glitch was hard to execute even when I knew about it (and it always fails if the subpixel position is in the wrong range). It had a couple of seemingly negative side effects: It made several downward slopes intangible, and it put some timed objects in the most inconvenient places... but the former made a new route possible and the latter forced me to find it. 12 seconds were saved in this act, unfortunately enough to cross a bonus boundary and lose most of those seconds in real-time.
Icecap 1: This is the only improvement that doesn't result from a new glitch. Instead I save time by taking a more direct route, which is much more difficult than the old route because Sonic is moving through the level (and can collide with its obstacles), not teleporting past it. I had given it up as impossible before, but found just the right angle and speed to pull it off. The jumping at the end was just to be annoying (and to manipulate Tails to not vanish before the boss fight).
Lave Reef 1: Like the Hydrocity 2 glitch, the new glitch here was picky about working and hard to do optimally with both Sonic and Tails. Also like in Hydrocity 2, the remainder of the act after the glitch had to be redone, but there was less that could be done differently here.
Lave Reef 2: At first I was stuck here for a long time because the change to the previous act put the timed objects in the wrong places for me to match the previous act 2 time without waiting enough to nullify the time gained. Then I saw the 100% Knuckles TAS use Hyper Knuckles' invincibility to get pushed into the ground by the Lava Reef 1 boss, and I continued to be stuck here for a long time trying to reproduce that without Super/Hyper form. After not thinking about it for a while, I suddenly had an idea on how to do it, and it worked, so (hours of hex editing later) I finally had an updated run that still beats the game.
This is actually the first time I have ever submitted an improvement to one of my own published runs. I'm honestly not sure if I like it more than the previous one. My favorite improved part is Hydrocity 2, and my favorite part of the run remains Carnival Night 1 and 2. Because it's not a complete redo, the rerecord count continues from where it was in the last version, although I believe many rerecords weren't counted due to reverting to previous movie files several times and making a lot of changes by in-level hex editing.
Since most of this run is the same as the previous one, please refer to that run's comments for further information.
Thanks to Eredani, Mike89, and Upthorn for info about the new Hydrocity 2, Lava Reef 1, and Lava Reef 2 glitches, respectively.
  • No death
  • Aims for fastest (primarily in-level) time
  • Ignores delays caused by bonus effects
  • Takes damage to save time
  • Abuses programming errors in the game (a lot)
  • Manipulates luck (a little)
  • One player controls two characters
  • Emulator used: Gens Movie Test 9j (works with 9f, 9z, etc.)

Hold on, gotta look for my face that has just been rocked off... I believe it is safe to assume that if nitsuja got his hands on an actual S3 + S&K cart, well, the carts would probably blow up. In other words yes

Why steal it when you can just borrow it.

Must you always underestimate yourself? Also, I wonder if some of the tricks you discovered can be utilized in the Hyper Knuckles run. And is it just a coincidence that a hoax run of this game was submitted a few days earlier?

Borrowing without asking permission is called stealing. Putting your name on someone elses work is not borrowing, it's permanent (it still says it's a run by YOU that was rejected).

What can I say...? I pretty much agree with Angerfist here. :) Yes vote, and this should get the obsoleted movie's star.

I have to say that I miss the way Ice Cap 1 was done last time (all up the snowboarding hill) but this improvement has the Hydrocity 2 and Lava Reef 2 improvements which more than make up for it. Yes vote from me.

I'm terribly happy you're back in business, Nitsuja — the site just isn't complete without you submitting groundbreaking stuff out of nowhere. :) Yes vote.

How funny, out of nowhere I decided to watch the old movie yesterday in between classes, just because I remembered being more entertained by it than by 90% of tv these days. And now a new one to watch:) I'll vote after I've actually watched it, but it's pretty obvious what it will be.

Great showmanship, that's all I can say. I did not want this run to end, much like the last one. It really doesn't get any better than this and I feel the same as AngerFist and Randil. Yes vote, I did like watching this movie, very much so.

Nitsuja, glad to see this from you. I didn't realize you were back to work on this, or I'd have given you my camhack improvements (now with clean audio and 90% less graphical errors), and let you know about another newly discovered glitch in launch base 1 zone. (By damage boosting into the spinning tube things, you can retain control and exit while they're inside walls to initiate zipping.) But this is still a solid improvement, so I'm voting yess.

No, they can't. I've been aware of them for as long as he has, (since before that run was submitted) and was unable to put them to use. Though Knuckles can get zipping from the moving wall in Hydrocity 2 in the same manner, if he levelwraps there, he gets stuck underwater, unable to reach the boss, and drowns. The ice cap glitch requires tails to break the ice block when Player1 is standing on it, and Knuckles can't make use of Tails. The LR1 glitch that improves LR1 time in this run isn't relevant to Knuckles' route, and the LR1 glitch that improves the LR2 time is already used, in a slightly faster variant. If I were to make a run that didn't use death, the HC2 glitch would be helpful. If I were to make a run that didn't use super/hyper knuckles, the alternate method of LR1 ending would be helpful.

Heh, wow. I loved the earlier version of this run, but the glitches you used to improve three of those stages came right out of the blue, especially what you pulled off on Lava Reef Act 2 (pushing yourself into the ground with the bonus television to initiate a warp.) You never cease to amaze me. This definitely deserves a Yes vote. Two thumbs up!

How much time will this new glitch save?

It isn't known. It takes about 20 seconds in order to get an enemy into a position where it can get you into a tube from damage knockback, and I'm not entirely certain how the glitch works (I've only seen it done in a youtube video), so I haven't been able to perform it in order to test. [edit] For clarification: I have been able to retain control into the tube, but I haven't figured out how to use this to exit the tube early. Also, a link to the video in question: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfmijVW3x5w It seems to have been performed in real time, without the use of debug mode. [edit2] I managed to make it work, but I haven't been able to duplicate it. When it did work, Sonic appeared in Knuckles' boss area at approximately 0:50. The bad news is that Knuckles' Act 2 route is about 3 seconds longer, and Sonic's act 2 has a higher water level than Knuckles which Sonic would be unable to survive without making use of a checkpoint bonus stage to reset the drown timer. The good news is that it's possible to get to that checkpoint the end of level boss with an ingame time of 0:08, which would make a total savings of 0:35 seconds real time, or 1:34 game time.

More hopeless flying through levels! I swear at a part in Ice Cap, the rapidly-flying-past-the-screen level was rather broken and glitchy. I fast-forwarded through everything else but the improvements... but congratulations on your improvements :)
