Kirby's Adventure -You can get stuck somewhere late in the game due to bad level design. You float up and bad movement will push you inside of a wall with no way out.
Where does this happen? I don't remember a place where you can enter a wall.

I've been trying for a while now and nothing happens (I'm on emulator). What kind of pit? I'm trying to trigger a crash in 1-2, where the cable car is.

Here's more: [Crash] -Use a glitch item (like the "yes" item obtained after gaining 86 level ups) -Occasionally while using the card glitch to level up -Glitch an NPC to attack during its turn, and use a card [Softlock/Stuck] -Talk to the glitched NPC looking out the window on the train to teleport to the Forbidden Woods, then walk back to where the 3rd boss is. -On the train, talk to the NPC that glitches the screen repeatedly for a never ending dialogue box -Glitch an NPC to attack during its turn, select a move and wait for yourself to get hurt. -Open the menu right before some dialogue trigger -Press select to find where you are while right next to the glitched NPC looking out the window on the train and hold "A". After a couple seconds, press "A" again to teleport into a wall in the beginning area. -Open the menu right before a boss, and after the battle, you get stuck into a wall -Using "Yes" in battle may bring up the menu. I accidentally did it on my N64 a few months ago in a pit in the (third?) level of Neo Star, where the fog and falling rocks are. I ran out of air and fell into the pit, and I was about to pause and choose Exit Stage, but apparently my health was already counting down and it froze. I had full health, but I think I pressed pause at three or four health points.

I remember a way to softlock Kirby's Dream Land. When beating a boss/miniboss that gives you a star or warpstar, and there is not only Kirby and the boss onscreen but at least 1 other object, as Kirby jumps, he will be stuck in the air briefly for the game to remove the other objects. If you pause right before Kirby gets stuck, then you can't unpause and you need to reset the game. Because the earliest point you can do this is after beating Whispy woods, I don't feel like making a video about it though.

Crashing Sonic the Hedgehog Megamix is possible in less than 1 second on counter. All what you need is simply to start any level with Knuckles and make a spin dash too early. Link to video

Remembered some more. By the way, that's a nice Sonic 1 Megamix vid. L. A. Noire. Play the game until The Red Lipstick Murders case. Get to La Bamba Club early and pick up the glitch clue from the table, crashing the game. Xena: Warrior Princess for GBC. The strange corruption glitch in the second swamp screen can cause a softlock or even crash the game. Another, slower way is to ride a mine cart to the exit of the mine using a glitch - that usually crashes the game. God of War. Play until you get to Poseidon's Challenge. Then do the underwater momentum glitch until game crashes. No, wait, a faster one. Play until you get to the entrance to Challenge of Hades. Open up the Gorgon Eye chest nearby and attempt to save. The save menu should be buffered in a strange way, and retrying from checkpoint makes you enter a glitched version of the menu where you can't leave from (softlock). Another crash you can do at will is to play until you get Army of Hades. Upgrade both Blades and AoH and then retry from last checkpoint. Before image returns, cast AoH. Game crashes. Of course, random freezes can also occur in the game, as early as in the Hydra boss fight. God of War II. For Bonus Play: play until Colossus III, then switch sub-weapons during the cutscene in which you get Blade of Olympus. That tends to crash the game. Also, the game can crash if you switch sub-weapons before latching onto swinging grapple points. Finally, doing things at the wrong order at Phoenix Chamber and trying to leave will crash the game. God of War III. Most of the ways to crash the game I remember involve having finished the game once, so that you unlock Combat Arena and can do NG+ glitch. Fastest way is probably starting a NG+ game, then escaping the first fight. The game crashes after you beat the first boss. Another pretty quick one is getting to Tomb of Ares, spawning the centaur outside the Tomb, high jumping back outside the Tomb, then getting hit by Centaur's throw in the cramped corridor. The camera does a cool effect, then game tends to crash. It's also easy to crash the game while exiting River Styx (doing a glitch in which you combine "weakened Kratos" and "using items" modes) or attempting an early chain break. One possible way to crash a New Game save is by playing until you get Claws of Hades, then casting Soul Summon while keeping switching the soul you cast. At least with some souls it tends to crash the game. God of War III demo. Play until you get Head of Helios. Then cast its attack in air. It works in strange ways and can crash the game. Might be faster ways to crash the game too. Mortal Kombat II for GB. Play as Shang Tsung. Defeat your opponent, then do a fatality. During the fatality, input the prompt for a stage fatality instead. The game freezes up. Prince of Persia 2008. Fastest way is probably doing "teleportation glitch" without having set any coordinates for the game to teleport you to. This usually crashes the game, although not always. Then, a way to softlock the game is by glitching away from a section where Elika is bound by corruption, then entering a cutscene (softlock at the end of the scene) or going far away and dying (you respawn at the unloaded place from where you left and keep endlessly falling down and respawning, a sort of softlock).

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Fastest softlock: Superswim to forsaken fortress to make it night, superswim to Windfall for Intro CS glitch, talk with Tott or Mailbox. Just finished TASing it actually: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t253OYgmuzk Fastest crash: Superswim to Forsaken Fortress to make it night. Superswim to Outset and somehow get to Forest of Fairies with the bridge gone. Probably just a crazy fast superswim.

Tip to anyone wanting to submit one of these: Make sure the game doesn't have a 5 minute intro.

Pokemon Yellow (and presumably the rest of the mainstream first gen games): Use a glitch move thats name is TMXX. Some glitch moves crash the game (screen turns a lot of colours, and sound freezes too I think.) Not sure exactly which glitch pokemon has one of these but I think it's Q or 44HY. Been done in real time, but probably a much faster way than this, but I don't know of one.

The Pokémon Blue TAS currently on the workbench does this with the glitch move -- (except it sets up memory so that it jumps to memory rather than crashing; -- is known to cause crashes sometimes, but is less crashy than some of the others). That took nearly half an hour (it needed Mew for Transform, the fastest known way to get to a glitch move barring save corruption). I know it's possible to get a softlock faster than that (do the Brock skip, then return to the area along the wrong line, and you'll be stuck in a cutscene indefinitely). I'm not sure what the soonest possible crash is, though. These fastest-to-crash runs are probably quite important, though, for helping TASing; something that crashes the game but only sometimes can often be used to get total control (or warp to the credits).

I thought that was only a softlock? Btw, how does the crash in that nicovideo TAS work? I have no way to translate the japanese explanation (well, I'd have to transcribe it into unicode - and as non japanese speaker that will take forever)

While unintended, this is from a WIP, and is technically a crash (not sure if it works real time) but... Over the Hedge DS http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/19133695754579065

It is arguable. For me a crash was always a game freeze where the game glitches up on a screen where you can't even see or move your character regardless of if it lags forever. A softlock in contrast is when you're in an unwinnable situation, stuck in a cutscene mode or locked room/inside of a wall but can still see, hear or control your character. Arguably, being able to move between whole rooms or levels while also in an unwinnable situation due to missing inventory items or bad game flags may also constitute a softlock. You could also argue, a softlock is when the game still accepts button combinations to reset itself. When it doesn't although it should then it crashed/froze. Where is the line between softlock and crash for you? This discussion should be split into the topic that I linked.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror can be softlocked faster than 47.22 using Cook glitch to inhale forever. The helper Kirbys will be unable to move pink Kirby to an enemy to make the inhaling stop so the game is locked for good. I don't think I will be working on a TAS of this since the cook glitch requires tedious luck manipulation of the helper Kirby movement. Note: The 47.22 "softlock" by phone calling near a death tile causes the game to stop recognizing the ABSs button combination to reset itself. Therefore it is arguable if it is a game freeze (therefore should be put in the crash category) rather than a softlock. There is a game freeze later on (1m30s mark) by using the first dark Kirby battle. In this case, the game starts lagging forever. (Game doesn't lag in the previous 2 cases.)
