Dooty’s Comments

No it’s not the 100% update of the PSX version I was working on. I’m still stuck there; a handle to open one of the trapdoors is missing. So I decided to watch some Oddworld videos to see if there’s a new trick, or at least something to motivate me to search for the cause of the glitch. The first video I watched was exactly the TAS of Oddworld Adventures, by Applepieman. Reading his comments something got my attention on Stage 3-4; “Now for some reason I didn't have to activate the chimes to open the door, so hurray time saved.” Little did he know, but he already used that trick on Stage 2-3 (Door 4). So I went to investigate the relation between those two open doors. To my surprise, I found it right on Stage 1; it was the Pause Trick! The rest is what you’re about to see on this run, a few optimizations here and there and I managed to shave 5879 frames off of the published run. As always, I hope you enjoy the run and see you very soon.

Stage 1

He possessed and killed a Slig, but it’s slightly faster to avoid him.

Stage 2-1

The use of the Pause Trick alone would be enough to save some time here, but since the door is open, let’s use it.

Stage 2-2

The Sligs here are really tough to avoid, but the Pause Trick “tricked” them.

Stage 2-3

Here’s where Applepieman used the Pause Trick to open a door for the first time, and I just used the same strategy.

Stage 2-4

If a door requires a password to open, the Pause Trick is useless. Fortunately, it’s not the case here, but it will change in a
bit.

Stage 2-5

Here I use a trick from Applepieman’s test run; the wrap around. I’m still not sure if that’s the best way to spend a Pause
Trick, but it’s cool.

Stage 2-6

Now this stage is weird; use the Pause Trick in any other room first and you’ll be forced to use the chimes to get out. That’s
why that Pause Trick at the start for apparent no reason.

Stage 2-7

Exactly the same strategy here. Yeah, sorry I’m lazy.

Stage 3-1

I tried, believe me, but it’s still faster to do what Applepieman did.

Stage 3-2

Finally something new, and it’s not the Pause Trick; if you have to throw something and have enough room to crouch, do so.

Stage 3-3

Time to use the throw while crouched again, it is 10 frames or so faster than throwing while standing.

Stage 3-4

This stage is the reason of this new run, and even though it is faster, I couldn’t find a place to use the Pause Trick to
actually save time.

Stage 3-5

The only difference here is the way I collect the meat for the Slog, the rest is carbon copy of the published run. Now, after the run I decided to spend a few frames to go to the credits, so no user interaction is needed anymore.

Special Thanks

Applepieman, for his runs of this game. A lot of his strategies are still the best and fastest, thank you.

feos: That's another borderline case, but it didn't get really bad feedback, and people were more entertained by this run than by its predecessor, so I'm mooning it, unless the rates are ugly. Publishing...
