Submission Comments
This submission is for the (terrible) NES port of Winter Games, an Olympics-style game with a whopping 4 events.

Game objectives

  • Emulator used: Bizhawk 2.8
  • Aims for fastest time
  • Figure skating is awful in this game

Comments

This game has 4 events. Hot dog aerials (a trick contest) speed skating, figure skating and a bobsled course. We pick Japan as it has the shortest unskippable national anthem jingle. REV A was used due to faster loading times between levels.

Stage by stage comments

Aerials, in the sky

Doing tricks loses time, so we don't. To not get a "fault" in the event you have to get a score and also not crash. 0.0 is a score, so we move on.

Speed Skating

This short event revolves around alternating left and right presses with a cadence to build and maintain speed. It's a shorter interval in the beginning and gets longer the faster you go.

Figure skating

This is basically an autoscroller, though you can optimize the end of the event. When the timer hits zero, the next time your skater is in the "closed legs" animation, she will take a knee and finish the event. If you're mid-stride when time expires, you have to wait until the animation catches up to that point.
Along the way, I do some tricks. A perfect score is 6 based on landing every trick and some hidden and cryptic "gracefulness" which I couldn't figure out.
If you (yes, you!) can get a perfect 6 on this event without losing any time (i.e. finish frame perfectly) you'll win a shiny co-authorship courtesy of ShesChardcore and TASVideos. I couldn't even find a video of someone getting 6 at all on NES (though one exists for C64) so yeah. Have fun with that.

Bobsled

We only have to finish one race to get credit, allowing us to crash the last two. There are very minor and annoying variances in this event where sometimes what would look to be optimal isn't actually optimal, so there was some trial and error going into the turns to shave frames where possible.
Also the IGT is a big big liar and should never be used for anything. I mean look at how it counts: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 17, 18, 19, 10, 11, 12, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 39, 30
What even IS that?

Other comments

I'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel here but TASmania ain't gonna finish itself.

feos: Claiming for judging.
feos: Couldn't beat your times this time, so this time the times in your run are probably good. Accepting.
