EDIT: Tompa has since improved this TAS by 206 frames - https://tasvideos.org/UserFiles/Info/638382347075651662
About the Game
Pringles is a 2009 Sega Genesis / Mega Drive homebrew platformer about... well, Pringles. It has 9 levels, which are split into 3 worlds, no music and only 3 sound effects. You play as the pre-simplicity era Pringles mascot who has to bounce on Pringles to reach the goal in every level.
2 of the world names are misspelt. Basil & Tomato is & Basil Tomato and Black Pepper is Brack Papper. The first world, Sour Cream & Onion is spelt correctly. I'll be referring to the world names with their correct spellings.
About the TAS
This TAS aims to get an A in all 9 levels, which involves getting a perfect combo. This unlocks the true ending of the game.
The Improvement
This is a 4.79 second improvement over the current publication due to strenuous lag reduction and new strategies, as well as earlier input end.
Tompa discovered a few months ago that when Mr Pringles' speed is 0, the game lags 1 frame less than if he's moving. This is used to save small amounts of time here and there during vertical sections.
Here’s the world-by-world improvements:
Sour Cream & Onion
Tompa managed to nail all the vertical sections on SC&O 2 this time (one of them didn’t bounce on all 3 at once), as well as lag reduction on all 3 levels.
Basil & Tomato
Again, Tompa fixed a couple of the vertical sections that didn’t bounce on all 3 Pringles at once, this time on B&T 3. All 3 levels were once again treated to heavy lag reduction.
Black Pepper
I found 2 new tricks to optimise BP 1. Near the end of the level, there's a vertical section of Pringles heading south-west. My old TAS from June bounced on the Pringles one by one, but I discovered that it was actually faster to bounce on the bottom 2 Pringles first and then land on the top one. I also improved the last vertical section with more precise weaving, with lag being reduced further by Tompa.
Tompa made a couple of very precise manoeuvres to save chunks of time on BP 3. Input was ended much earlier on this level - it turns out that after getting the perfect combo required for an A, you can bounce as many times as you like. This enabled me to hold R for 1 frame less than the current publication. Then Tompa found a strategy I missed - building up speed from the left of the stack of Pringles, which allowed even earlier input end.
That's all from us. Thanks for reading.
nymx: Claiming for judging.
nymx: Another great improvement. I can't really decide what I like more between the two categories. It just says this game is a good homebrew.
