Introduction
Simple DS Series Vol. 21: The Hohei: Butai de Shutsugeki! Senjou no Inutachi is a Nintendo DS port of Simple 2000 Series Vol. 102: The Hohei: Senjou no Inutachi for the PlayStation 2, both of which were developed by Tamsoft as part of D3Publisher’s Simple series line of Japanese budget titles, with each of the DS outings launching at an MSRP of 2,800 yen.
As far as the gameplay is concerned, imagine if Metal Gear Solid was directed by Hideo Kojima’s bizarro cousin, Hideous Kojenius.
Quirks
- Cancelling the Weapon Cooldown
- Normally when you fire a weapon, you have to wait a while before you can actually switch to a different weapon. You may even have to wait slightly longer if you're running.
However, if you perform an emergency roll after firing, you can immediately switch weapons when the roll animation is finished. The same goes for throwing grenades and vice versa.
Run Comments
- 1-5
- I do 1-5 first for the sake of gaining enough EXP to get two rank ups in one mission.
After the mission, I dump all of my points (and the following 10) into the Stamina stat, allowing me to run longer distances without having to consume rations.
- 1-3
- A free mission where you have to bomb two gates with grenades. I shoot enemies in front of me so that they don't get the funny idea of shooting me from behind.
When we get to the second half of the game, the "N1RPG" pretty much makes grenades obsolete.
- 1-1
- Another free mission, albeit one that suffers from lag when you can see too many enemies in the jungle setting at once. Firing your weapons also makes said lag even worse.
- 1-4
- Another "walk from Point A to Point B" mission. I bring a "Ration A" with me beforehand so that I don't run out of stamina near the end.
- 1-2
- I pick up two rations dropped by enemies because 2-5 really eats through your stamina.
- 2-2
- Two enemies on the right near the start would've been problematic if I hadn't shot them. Thankfully, I didn't end up killing too many enemies otherwise the area where you have to blow up two radio towers and the tent would've been a pain.
- 2-3
- Before I start, I take an extra clip for the enemies that need to be taken out with the sniper rifle.
Also, in certain cases: Exiting first-person view, running diagonally forward (up-left or up-right) for a bit, then entering first-person view again can help cut down on the time needed to aim at an enemy with the sniper rifle.
Since my Stamina stat is already upgraded to the maximum of 30 points, I pump the points I get from further rank ups into Accuracy. It's also worth noting that I can't leave without putting all of my points into something.
- 2-4
- Blowing up all three turrets with one grenade may be TAS only unless a human takes care to line it up just right? I also had a bit of trouble trying to throw the grenade without getting shot.
- 2-1
- This mission is pretty meh. Just run up to three dying soldiers and that's it. Also, funny quirk to note: Your stamina replenishes during cutscenes since you're actually standing still.
- 2-5
- Even with the two rations I picked up in 1-2, I end up having to stall a bit before I can approach the fifth and final tree. Kinda sucks. This is also probably the most offensive mission in terms of stamina consumption.
- 3-5
- This mission is also kinda whatever, having up to blow up six tanks. I thought it would be funny to blow myself up with the last grenade, since this port likes to prioritise me clearing the mission objective as opposed to actually surviving.
- 3-4
- Rolling practically negates the insta-kill damage I would've otherwise taken from being in the rocket's radius.
- 3-3
- What a long way to go just to blow up a tank.
- 3-2
- If I hadn't shot one of the guys near the gate that I need to blow up, they would've shot me in the leg, which really slows you down since you have to waste time watching your soldier pull himself back up.
- 3-1
- Point A to Point B again. The two guys I shot would've been problematic had I just run by them with the knife in hand.
- 4-1
- Finally, we get access to a rocket launcher, even though I still use grenades to blow up most of the tents. Getting shot by the enemies during my throw animations turned out to be a blessing, since the animation for taking damage is way shorter in comparison.
- 4-2
- One rocket for every tank, plus we get to see more instances of how broken the roll is when it comes to rockets that are fired by the enemy.
Even though I pretty much don't use melee during the run, I dump my rank up points into the Combat stat anyway because the game won't let me leave until I do.
- 4-3
- Bringing another ration with me because this is another mission that eats through your stamina, although nowhere as bad as 2-5.
A lot of the time, the machine gun will usually miss here unless I take a "pray and spray" approach. I also use the N1RPG to insta-kill the "boss enemy."
- 4-4
- Easy and generic "kill them all" mission.
- 4-5
- Same exact idea as the mission, only I have to bring along another ration because of how much this one makes you travel.
- 5-5
- The N1918 machine gun I get for clearing Level 4 has a better firing range comparable to the sniper rifles at 50m, which I gladly take advantage of starting here.
- 5-4
- Had I not stopped on the bridge for like a frame, I would've gotten shot by an enemy on the roof.
- 5-3
- I'm glad the snipers up top had that Stormtrooper aim going on, otherwise this mission just feels like a drag.
Fun fact: In the original PS2 version, this was another "Point A to Point B" mission, as opposed to blowing up the five gates.
- 5-2
- Even though the rocket launcher doesn't insta-kill the boss, I use the sniper rifle to finish him off, and pick off the last two enemies before his cutscene can begin.
- 5-1
- I use the rocket launcher twice in this mission. One is for a huge group of enemies where firing with the machine gun would've just lagged the game, and the other is for killing one enemy without having to get stuck on level geometry to take the shot.
- 6-2
- Even though I had to reload, this mission was pretty fun to optimise, considering its objective of "just kill everyone."
- 6-3
- Another "nuff said" kill everyone mission.
- 6-1
- I have to retrieve some documents from a dying soldier then run all the way back to the starting point, so I naturally take another ration with me.
The dying soldier is surrounded by a group of enemies, so I fire a rocket at them for the sake of optimisation and lag reduction.
- 6-4
- A short and sweet mission where I take out three enemy tents with a single rocket.
- 6-5
- The machine gun was surprisingly accurate for enemies that were just spawning in. Pretty proud of my execution in this final mission too. Could've done without the final rank up though.

Darkman425: Looks good to me. Lots of carefully planned stamina usage for power walking throughout the missions and other techniques to keep the time down. Nice work!
