Ok, what about reworded 4 options: No/Meh/WeakYes/Yes ? :)

I don't care how many ways you can say yes, no or maybe, there needs to be an odd number of choices. Then one could cast a truly 50/50 vote.
So I guess you want to rate submisisons, although on smaller scale. Opinion polls don't have to have odd number of choices.

No, nah, and yeah, yes say the same thing. No, weak no, meh, weak yes, yes do not say the same thing.
These were just fond abbreviations, nothing to be taken seriously.

Plus, with your 4 options, I can't be neutral.
But even with today's 3-option-polls, when you're voting Meh you're not being neutral, you're actually voting weak no. If a movie receives many Meh votes, most likely it will be rejected, which is quite natural, because TASes shouldn't arouse indifference.

I support the idea of four options. Honestly, I always assumed Meh vote as something like Weak No. Because TASes are made to excite people, so there won't be absolutely neutral mood after watching them. Really neutral opinion is simply not voting. So I'm for "No/Nah/Yeah/Yes" polls. There's no need to outweight negative side of polls with 5 options (Strong No, No, Weak No, Weak Yes, Yes).

WONDERFUL run! I cried from laughing at the music video at the end, it was masterfully done. Great glitchy run too. And holy crap what a messing game! OH!
Huh, I thought music sync is getting old since 2007, so I didn't really tried to do anything special. As for current ratings, I still think they are little bit overstated. Not that I complain though. :)

Here is how i'd make a game hard to TAS.
Fortunately, such game would lack much fun for regular player as well, so I doubt it would ever exist.

So spectacular and shiny! Brilliant run. Operating these laser reflectors while insanely rushing forward was so amazing I had to watch it in frame advance.

Sure, manipulating luck in most cases isn't easy, but IMO it's nothing comparing to visually challenged TASing. I'm talking about these movies where camera fails to follow character or where time-saving glitch screws screen so bad that the only way to learn what's going on is to monitor dozens of memory values and draw the picture in your mind. Maybe it's not really difficult technically, but it sure is frustrating.

I've just noticed that FCEUX (even 2.0.4-interim) refuses to run ROMs stored in a folder that has cyrillic symbols in its name. While the bug isn't very significant for me (I usually name folders using English, not Russian), but for some people it might be real problem, because FCEU just shows black screen without any messages or hints how to solve the situation. Anyone care to use unicode?

I'm wondering something. If you make a slower movie, but it is more entertaining than the previous version, will it be accepted? Entertainment is really opinionated though.
River City Ransom is good example. While it didn't obsolete speedrun version, it kinda outweighted it by higher ratings given by the community. I think every tasworthy game should have at least two movies in Tasvideos base.

In fact, yes, now with that submission rating I feel like I'm voting No when giving a movie less than 6. While it's pretty average mark for published movies, at Workbench such movies tend to be unaccepted.

Actually, I think it's good idea, alden! Themed Movie Lists are kind of unofficial alternative to strict categories. Because there are a lot of common aspects in movies, but not all of them can be grouped by undisputable rules. While there can't be such category as "Doesn't play the game", it looks just fine as less formal "theme list". So keep it up! Here's an idea (shabby one). It would be interesting to see such themed list: tool-assisted speedruns that correspond to unassisted records in terms of time (let's say, unassisted run should have no more than +5% to TAS record). First nominee being SMB, of course. Another idea (doesn't require being too familiar with unassisted speedrunning). A lot of movie descriptions say that the movie "makes difficult game seem easy", but there's no such tag (because it's a little subjective). So what about themed list for these movies?

Voted "Add a text urging one to post", although "vote buttons" seems to be much more realistic option for our lazy community. Honestly, do judges really need any statistics other than number of posts in submission topic? This "number" is enough to form priorities. As for final decision, neither votes nor ratings can be trusted alone (without proper watching and analysing comments). I like current time at Workbench, when viewers are forced to put their feelings into words. It's the best motivation for TASing! Here's how I see the site mission. For me, TASvideos is something between demoscene and Youtube. When the site was young, it was more closer to demoscene. But to spread TASing among common public it was necessary to add such features as ratings/polls/tags and so on. Thus it became closer to generic Web2.0 portal with user-generated content. Sure, it was needed when TASing wasn't well-known (or even accused on cheating/etc), but today IMHO it's time for old values to make comeback. At least in terms of reappraising channels of feedback - comments should be considered much more valuable than statistics. I hope TASvideos can find its healthy balance between pop art and alternative art.

Great to hear that the move will finally be pushed to its limit!

There seems to be variation in the fading time after the character selection screen. I never noticed it before. I tested it briefly and it seems that even with 2 frames of more time wasted in the character selection screen can result in 1 frame faster overall time, so there is sometimes at least 3 frames difference in the fading time! This means that at least all 9-frame and 10-frame iterations need to be tested in order to find/verify the optimal movie.
I'm positive that's because the game keeps placing sceptre on wrong positions (where there's a building on the map), thus calling RNG many times after checking its position.
Aqfaq wrote:
Because of the varying fade time, I can't tell what is the exact maximum amount of luck-manipulation that is allowed.
I doubt the fade would vary by more than 3 frames or so.

Whoa, who could expect an unassisted speedrun to provide better strategy for such polished TAS.

This was really clever! Too bad an AVI can't express awesomeness of the movie, because most of entertainment comes from reading submission text and realizing the whole scheme behind the run.

Phew, the movie sure was long! I took two moderate pauses before finishing watching this RPG-like epic. One hundred of puzzles is definitely too much. Also, they are not as different and unique as in previous Lolo games. But I must say, none of levels made me use fastforward. In fact, I even rewatched some rooms when I felt like I spotted minor improvements - but all of them proved to be slower than current strategies. And during second half of the movie I wasn't quite following the pace, so I could easily miss something. I'll give this run strong Yes vote, but obviously not everyone can enjoy such kind of speedruns. Fortunately, there are several published Lolo TASes which can introduce this genre to everyone - without boring to death. If the run will be published (I hope it will), description text should recommend to watch PRO levels and Lolo1 movie before attempting to watch this run.

I did like the glitching (although it wasn't as frantic as in Megaman games), so Yes vote here! But I'm not 100% sure if this should obsolete current run. This movie looks more like boss rush mode. And bosses aren't the best the game has to offer. Still I was entertained, but mostly because of unexpected glitching. Well, I guess the obsoletion is imminent, so I'm not complaining. It would be ultimately great to have both this short run and full Little Samson run (no warps and no wall glitches).

That looks like sort of trade ('do better and I will vote').
Actually, this was like sort of encouragement. Who could expect that you was too tired by the game to continue tasing it.

I don't plan to be slave of this run. I finished this project. Of course it's not perfect, but many other runs on this site is not perfect too. There is always room for improvements. I'm don't sure if I'll try to make TAS of this game again, because I have really many other interesting things and projects to do. In TAS field, I have one another unfinished project, and I only hope that I'll find time to finish it first. I don't know if I will make any other TAS after that. So, if anybody know how to make better run of this game - there is no need to wait for me. Just do better run, I will glad to see it.
Uh... you could just say that currently you don't have enough motivation/patience to rewrite the movie from the very beginning. It would be perfectly understandable.
Shiru wrote:
If I'd vote for this run, I'd took in account those thoughts: it's surely not perfect run, but significaly better than two old attempts (so it's at least not bad); if there will be three rejected attemps of this game, there will be less chances that somebody will try this game in future (published run has more chances to improvements). So, for me it's more question of TAS potential of this game, and seems we already know that it has such potential.
Wow, it's been a while since someone created completely new entry for moozooh's List. ;) Puns aside, maybe you're right. Not while saying that three rejected attemps would prevent anyone from TASing the game (it's obvious that this game has good TASing potential), but you're right that published movie is gonna be improved much sooner, because clearly_subpar_run_in_archive is an itch for any finished TASer, even those who weren't interested by the game. :)

Yes, I was talking about "preventing FCEU from loading states from other movies".
No, no, this feature should remain. Loading savestates from other movie sometimes is very helpful. For example, this way you can compare checkpoints while improving old run. Sure, loading improper savestates creates some possiblity to screw your own movie, but still for me it's more comfortable than running two FCEU windows with different movies/savestates.

Hey, that was quick! I like how you managed to improve the run both with speed and entertainment. Although the dances in the last boss room were little bit incoherent, but whole performance was funny.
You should use Gens 9J or near because newer versions have sound desync at third boss.
I used Gens 9.5b and didn't have a problem enjoying your sound idea. But I guess the message was meant for publishers.

I'd vote against such obsoletion. Here I'll try to analyse my attitude with terms of MovieRatings system. From this aspect, for me such cheap tricks lower entertainment value approx. by 1 point. And I doubt time improvement to be significant enough to rise technical value by whole 1 point. Well, only if there are other improvements and interesting tricks. But even in the case of parity ("Ent-1, Tech+1") total rating result is gonna be little lower, because IIRC entertainment has bigger weight in current rating formula. So with such figures in my mind I doubt I'd see new movie being superior, even with some amount of new stuff among cheap ways.

Why not? Sure it requires high level of precision which can be achieved via tool-assistance or pure luck. So I agree the trick is impossible to repeat in realtime, but not to find it accidentally.
Deign wrote:
And as klmz was saying for his first submission, he had been trying to figure out a way to get past the flagpole without having to lower the flag. So he has been trying to do this for quite some time tool-assisted.
Uh, I was under impression that klmz wasn't one who actually found the trick.
