So far I've been testing ideas in various sections of the game. I haven't started making the movie. I don't really know why you're making this run.

It looks like it's about equal with the Famtasia run so far. Level 2 and thereafter is a lot more difficult though. And I have a few new plans. I think taking the flame early is a mistake. Its lack of range is a problem.

I suggest 'How do you rate this movie?' and the use of a 1–5 rating system instead of yes/no/meh. 5 - publish immediately 4 - publish eventually 3 - has minor flaws that need to be corrected before publishing 2 - needs to be entirely redone 1 - atrocious; do not attempt to make a new version

I will do Rush'n Attack and Ghosts 'n Goblins. I think Rush'n Attack is the more improvable movie of the two.

Here's what I wrote in my notes. I don't know whether or not it works (it's probably incomplete), but maybe it will be useful somehow. Park - Pear (Apple?), Belt of Truth Downtown - Key, Keyhole, Breastplate, Key Airport - Key (5,4) Warehouse - Keyhole, Boots Hotels - Banana (Would the cheaper grapes work instead?) Shipyard - Samson's Jawbone, Key (3, C) (Raft?) Beach - The Sword of the Spirit Lost at Sea - Keyhole Woods - Helmet of Salvation, Key (A,8) Prison/Demon's Lair - Keyhole

I investigated this hallowed game quite a bit (in terms of making a timeattack). But the reasons that I decided not to play it are that it would take longer than I had first thought, and there is the problem of collecting Spirit Points. It would be great to see it done, though. I have the notes for the route that I had planned, but I don't know whether or not it's feasible. I played through only about 1/4 of it.

Yes, it looks correct. The main point is that both the crouching attack and jumping crouch attack should do damage, but the enemy won't indicate whether or not Link's sword connected on second attack. You'll have to know how many hits it takes in order to kill each particular enemy so that you don't miss an attack or two without realizing it. (i.e. sometimes an enemy didn't die when I expected it to, and so I had to redo the fight because an attack had missed.) Fighting against ironknuckles is a different story though, especially if there's a low ceiling.

I can help if there are situations in which you aren't sure whether or not you've done it as fast as possible.

Ok. Here's what I think after comparing the J and U versions: I already mentioned the keys for levels 1 and 2. Level 3 should be the same. Set up your 6-count for level 4 here. In level 4 you can skip the key and go directly to the boots. Then you can get a magic refill from the entrance statue. But you still have to make sure that you have planned the 6-count carefully for the end part of the level. In level 5 you can skip the key that's in the room that has falling blocks. But after getting the flute, you'll have to get a red jar from someplace in the palace (not from an enemy - you'll need it from an enemy in level 6). Level 6 should be the same - get the red jar refill from the red ironknuckle (6-count again). These things are based on what my magic levels were though. If yours are higher (likely), then some things may need tweaking.

Yes you need all of the magic containers. Big enemies drop a 200 point P-Bag whereas small enemies drop a 50 point one. Also in case you didn't know, you won't need the keys that I needed in palace 1. In palace 2 you can fairy through the doors and get the two magic jars within the palace. I think that my prediction was wrong - the time will probably be more like 48:30 or faster.

P-Bag: Yes, you should be able to get the item that you need. You just might have to wait a frame to attack. The P-bag that I grabbed 19:02 into my video was one that was really hard to get without slowing down (because of the flames), but I eventually made it work. Fighting: What I did was to do a crouching attack and then immediately do a jumping attack (so that Link moves forward). It is somewhat hard to do perfectly, and you can't always tell whether or not the second hit connected. Leveling: I don't know the exact way to do it correctly for the U version. You don't have to worry about equalizing the levels for the restart like in the J version though (i.e. don't upgrade life). I needed level 5 magic before entering level 3 so that I could 'fairy' through the two locked doors. Likewise, I needed magic-6 for level 4, magic-7 for level 6, and magic-8 for the last palace. But, you may have to make adjustments, since you can grab certain items as a fairy, whereas I had to unlock the door. I remember that when I watched sdkess' Zelda II speedrun, his leveling-up method was pretty good. Maybe you can derive a plan from it. You should watch it anyway so that you can plan your P-Bag and magic jar drops. Overworld: Some enemies can be manipulated by your timing and the squares on which you step, but others automatically appear after a predetermined amount of time (most noticeably on the way to the last palace).

currently XX seconds faster than Arc's run
Of course, the games are different in many ways, and so they are incomparable as a whole. (In this thread I predicted that a non-glitched Zelda II (USA) run would be about 49:30.) But, we can compare parts. Currently, your movie ends at 5:36, when mine is at 6:26. The differences are: (1) in Zelda 2 (J), the 'Link x3' screen appears 25 seconds into the movie, whereas in the (U) version it appears after 1 second; (2) I went through 7 load screens; and (3) I leveled up twice. 6:26 - 24 seconds at the start - 28 seconds of loading - 6 seconds of leveling + 2 seconds for your cancelled level up and necessarily slower statue grab = 5:30. And so it seems that you are about 6 seconds behind in terms of actual playing. The reason is that your fighting style is a slower single attack instead of a double attack.

Wouldn't it be faster to have Dave open the grate then send him immediately to the pool without switching to Razor first? Or am I missing something?
You are missing that Dave and Razor are on the same screen when I switched, and so there is no screen-transition delay at that point. I moved Razor far enough so that when I switched back to her, the water valve would be on the screen. P.S. I've figured out how to significantly improve this timeattack.

Your reasons against using 'timeattack' seem to be the following: 1. The idea that a compound word does not mean the same thing as the two words that form it is "ridiculous and stupid." Therefore, e.g., a loud speaker is the same as a loudspeaker. 2. Terms in English cannot have more than one sense. 3. We should describe things. Therefore, e.g., 'visually impaired' is preferable to 'blind.' 4. We should use older, more established terms. Therefore, e.g., we should continue to use 'tidal wave' instead of 'tsunami.' 5. Loaded questions / assertions / rhetoric It is not that I love 'timeattack' more, but that I love 'tool-assisted' less. Actually, I would enthusiastically stop using 'timeattack' in favor of 'dreamrun,' as long as references to 'tool-assisted speedrun' were also switched to 'dreamrun.' (Many definitions of 'dream,' such as 'a wild fancy or hope' and 'one that is exceptionally gratifying, excellent, or beautiful,' fit well with what we are doing.)

I find it questionable that people are trying to force new meanings to old words, causing potential confusion
What do you call your computer's mouse then (perhaps a hand-assisted wheel)? You know, since this new meaning of 'mouse' is wrong, undescriptive, and confusing to you and many others who cannot differentiate it from a living mouse by context.

I want to see the babalities/friendships/fatalities and other secrets of the game, even though they would make the movie be longer.

Oh uh... I was commenting on Lucas' coolness instead of his speedrun's. Go for max speed.

I think that Krelian (Xenogears) is the king of coolness. So my first thought was that it's because of personality. But, there are many silent heroes such as Crono or McDohl who are cool. Secondly, I thought about fighting ability. Cool people are often strong, but not always, and there are some uncool strong people (Sheena in Suikoden 2.) I like my third idea. It is that cool people have their own clear agenda or plan that may or may not be related to the main plot of the game. Examples: Krelian (Xenogears), Sephiroth (FF7), Killey (Suikoden 2), Pesmerga (Suikoden), Magus (Chrono Trigger), and Delita (FFT). Of course, having an interesting look is a part of it too.

The term tool assisted is older
Appeal to tradition.
real definition of time attack
They are homonyms. One definition isn't more real than the other.

'Spoken' i.e. verbally. They have learned it by context. "Did you see the SMB3 timeattack?" "Yes, that is awesome."

you certainly shouldn't be posting on forums about your save state runs and assume that people will know what you're talking about if you call them timeattacks.
There are 479 threads on these forums that contain the word 'timeattack,' so the word seems to be fairly well understood. The people outside of this community who I've spoken to about timeattacks haven't been confused either. Who are these allegedly confused people who are evidently 'most' people? (Not that I really care about them.) I don't see how 'timeattack' is misleading. 'Tool-assisted' just sounds so ridiculous and uncool. Like calling a powerboat a tool-assisted boat. Or calling stapling 'tool-assisted fastening.' If the movies had a cooler name like 'dreamruns' or something, then I wouldn't mind so much switching to that. Although I don't currently think that anything is wrong with 'timeattack.'
