1a. Powered-up Paper Mario
It's ok to use an adjective here because there is agreement that a powered-up Paper Mario is a type of Paper Mario. In our case, there isn't agreement that a 'tool-assisted' speedrun is really a type of speedrun. I say that it's a different type of thing that deserves a new term.
There is already something called a raccoon dog, which is also a form of animal. But I removed the space and decided that it is a completely new word which actually means the same thing as 1a. See where the problem is in this? It just confuses things even further.
Why such reluctance to form a compound word? New example: 1a) I hope that we have a large number of people gathered for our particular event or purpose. 1b) I hope that we have a large turnout. Is 'turnout' incorrect or confusing, because 'turn out' already has other meanings, such as 'to shut off' or 'to be found to be?'

Yes, because it is vague about what the tool is. Is it a keyboard? A hammer? It is really 'emulator-with-rerecording-and-slowdown-functions assisted.' Which one of these sounds better: 1a. Today I saw a bird of prey of the genus Falco that has a short, curved beak and long, pointed, powerful wings adapted for swift flight. 1b. Today I saw a falcon. I would go with 1b, although it doesn't mention the wings or beak or anything. I would also go with a sentence that contains the word 'timeattack' instead of one with a long phrase that defines it.

I keep timeattacks distinct from speedruns because of my even less popular view that timeattackers do not play the same games that speedrunners do. The speedrunners and I discussed this topic in this thread. I think that this view that the games are different is necessary in order to avoid being labeled (correctly) as cheaters. 'Tool-assisted' is too euphemistic. I would write more if I weren't thinking that it would be a waste of time.

Semantics. To 99.9% of people they are the same term.
Well, then place me in the .1% of people who say that the space distinguishes the terms. Appealing to the majority isn't a reason to believe an idea.
Why would you call the gradius video a timeattack?
I wouldn't. I'd call it and other movies that are unconcerned with time 'aesthetic.'

The title of this thread uses the term 'timeattack,' which is term that I prefer, but some of the discussion is about the term 'time attack.' My view is that these two terms should not be considered as the same thing. Example: 1a. I have a gold fish. (could be any fish that has a gold color) 1b. I have a goldfish. (could only refer to that particular species) I don't think that a timeattack is a) a time attack or b) a type of speedrun. I've written about this position on my website and on the Vortiginous forums. I don't really care about converting people to my view though; Bisqwitians may disagree.

I like the movie. The game is incredibly cool and the soundtrack is phenomenal.

Well, here is what I know about it. First, there must be a moving object on the screen, such as a snake or a moving platform. Second, it's repeatable if the exact same actions are repeated from a designated point. Third, it's manipulatable by jumping, stopping, firing bullets, etc. (At the spots where I fired bullets that missed, the glitches wouldn't have worked if I hadn't fired them in those particular cases.) There's no guaranteed way to make it work though. I just tried different movements and noted how long it took to get into the wall, then tried to do it faster than that, and repeated the process until I couldn't find any way to do it faster.

It's true that some people already had known about the ability to walk into walls. After some of my own experimentation, however, I have realized how to apply the concept in useful ways. First, it hadn't been known that Harry could get into a wall in only a few seconds. Second, it hadn't been known how to use this glitch practically in a route. I love planning routes. The first time that I use the wall exploit is to get to the Raj Diamond without having to pick up a Heart Ball. The second time that I use it is to get to a particular warp point (the red bird) quickly. Third, it hadn't been known that the same concept can force Harry to fall into the floor--a tactic that saves about 4 seconds at the second Easter Island Head.

To add some other nominees... Boco was questioned for months about the new Zelda 2 movie (that I eventually made, with her assistance.) #185 Sleepz' Kid Icarus was one of the last of the major NES classics done. #47 There hadn't been a full run of Excitebike until FODA did it recently. #297 There also hadn't been a full Mike Tyson movie until G&P's. #229

Genisto's Power Blade (#193), because it improved by almost 2 minutes a movie that had seemed to be only improvable by a few frames.

Hello Z, old chum. Well, very good, clearly. Here are my comments on the little things that most people probably won't notice: -It looks like you again improved the killing of the 2 skrees near the beginning (that makes it so the zoomer doesn't appear in the tunnel.) -Did you use the platform jumping technique that is used for the final escape sequence for the platforms in Brinstar? -The strategy in the missile room looked slightly improved. -I bet that you were annoyed by the zoomer moving toward you after the Ice Beam restart. ;) It happened to me too. -Getting Kraid to move forward like that was good manipulation. -I agree with not restarting after re-entering Brinstar (from Kraid's.) -The río luring looked better than what is in my no-boss movie. -I'm surprised that you could get the río into a good enough position without having to bounce Samus off of the step. -Mother Brain's room looked correct. It's worth commenting on because it takes a long time to get right, even with experience. -You should get 865 timeunits. :( I vote yes, and I'm pleased that now I won't have to make this movie.

Good question, Mr. Flewin. Evidently the only purpose of the radiation suit is to protect the kid from that charge that the Meteor shoots at you, not the Meteor itself. You can see that the cutscene occurs one frame before that charge hits Dave. I think that the graphic changes from not-wearing-the-suit to wearing-the-suit because the new graphic includes the kid holding the meteor...the programmers must have assumed that no one would be able to avoid getting the suit. Anyway, I'm cancelling this, because it can be done about 20 seconds faster.

Well, as I see it, most timeattack movies are entertaining because of their pursuit of perfection. There are only a few games that are both popular and intriguing enough to be entertaining timeattack movies with some sort of limiting condition. Examples: the Mario and Metroid series. MM isn't really popular enough for multiple movies. More people are interested in the hamster scenes than the endings anyway, and there's a supplemental movie for that already.

What I wrote seems to have been interpreted differently than I intended. I wasn't suggesting that the movies currently with stars should be reevaluated. Starred movies should keep their stars. I am just saying that perhaps at the end of each month, the movies that were submitted during that month (and any previously submitted movies that lack a star) should be discussed to determine whether or not any of them deserve to be added to the star group.

Yes, it looks fantastic. I too would like to see 'star' movies handled a bit differently - such as by having a monthly topic for evaluations and nominations.

I voted 'Meh' because the game has 2-player simultaneous play potential, and because a few parts looked improvable.

I've finished this, however I'm going to check to see whether or not I can save any more time against Hades. I did it quicker than the time I was aiming for, so I'm pleased about that. I'll submit it on Feb 3rd or 4th.

It still needs to do these things: 1. Avoid the bonus stages 2. Try to keep moving forward always 3. Don't kill enemies who waste time 4. Kill the bosses faster

The improvements are mainly from olive collecting, bosses, and some other minor things that perhaps only Jackic will notice. I don't think that jumping out of the screen is possible since it normally acts like a ceiling when the hero gets up that high. However Pegasus can pick up the hero and fly out of the screen so... I'll see if I can learn anything about that. I started the topic as information to those that are interested in Battle of Olympus and maybe as general encouragement to consider supposedly impossible routes.

(I wanted to keep this away from the other thread that is dominated by Clash at Demonhead.) I've been working on improving Battle of Olympus. What is similar between this game and the Zelda games is that the hero must first collect certain objects that allow access to the villain's lair. In Battle of Olympus, the hero must gather three fragments of love to open the way to Tartarus. Getting the first one is necessary to get the second, and the second is necessary to get the third. -- Actually, the two previous sentences are not technically true. Here's why. I thought about the possibility of breaking the normal 1-2-3 order. I realized that indeed this is possible: This is the barrier in Crete that usually causes instant death if touched. It is normally passed by having possession of the 2nd fragment of love. At this point I had none of the fragments. However, I successfully used the temporary invincibility from taking damage to slip through it. I then killed the boss and took the 3rd fragment of love. It had the usual message, which includes 'the way to Tartarus is now open.' However, when I went outside this was not the case, as Tartarus did not appear where it should. So, I had hoped to catch the programmers being lazy and having it be so that 'if the hero has the 3rd fragment of love then Tartarus opens.' This was not the case, but I was not worried. I could go get the 1st and 2nd fragments still. By my calculations, the 3-1-2 order is almost exactly as quick as the 1-2-3 order - it may actually be about 1-2 seconds faster in theory. I got the 1st and 2nd fragments. After my earlier experience, I had assumed that the programming was such that 'if the hero has all 3 fragments of love then Tartarus opens.' I proceeded to the Tartarus location and... it wasn't there. I then had to figure out what it is that activates Tartarus. I went back into Crete, where the 3rd fragment of love was, and found the answer. This is what activates Tartarus: The true programming is such that 'if the hero goes through the green room exit from Crete with all 3 fragments of love then Tartarus opens.' The background sky changes from blue to pink when the hero goes through the green room exit from Crete. I had thought (mistakenly) that this was due to either having the 3rd fragment or having all 3 fragments. Unfortunately I learned that the pink sky is actually caused by going through the green room exit in Crete, and also that it is necessary to open the way to Tartarus. One other desperate maneuver that I tried was to use the FCEU frame counter to see how many frames into the screen the entrance to Tartarus is. With the pink sky activated, but not the way to Tartarus, I checked to see if the Tartarus door was actually there, but just invisible. However, this idea did not seem to work. So, I cannot use the 3-1-2 order without losing significant time. The programmers have obstructed creativity. Getting the 2nd fragment is impossible without the first, so I will have to use the standard 1-2-3 order and undo some of what I've done. Fortunately, it isn't too difficult to redo this. And my time will still be what I expected, significantly faster than the current movie.

Once he was trapped in the corner (the last 5 hits), he repeatedly did the same move as long as I struck him at the same moment each hit.
