The existing run on this site beats yours by a very large margin, and so does the non-assisted speedrun over on SDA.

Ryu G Dragon, the fight ends due to >1250 damage, but over 2000 has been done in total, leaving 3 G Dragons to finish instead of 4.
I vaguely recall that the initial damage done to barubary is irrelevant for subsequent rounds, as he starts fully recharged. Or at least that's how I remember it.
and only one needs to be fought because it's the last enemy to die that determines the item drop.
Actually, whether or not an enemy will drop an item is determined before the battle is started. So he'd have to first find the right encounter before actually doing anything.

I'm really confused. How exactly do you activate this 'cheat'?
It's a button code entered at the sega logo. I am of the opinion that such a code should be used.
I think the cursor should not be tampered with for the sake of consistency
If every shining force 2 movie uses it, then it's consistent. The cursor movement would be consistent throughout the movie if it's used, so it's irrelevant really.

I use the restart sequence
Don't do that. seriously. I looked at the movie time when I opened it up and thought "for all that, he's only 10 minutes faster in the end?" and when I got to the end there was over 20 minutes of non-needed frames. If you consider that your goal wasn't to waste time, then you violated it massively and I'd vote no on it if you were to submit it as it is. I'd still wonder if not using wiseballs would save time, as you'd only need to use it twice in a turn since your max AP never exceeds 40, though you'd have to cure more often and keep more people alive. I'd still say it'd be less time consuming than the alternative, but I'm not going to check it myself. At roughly 250 frames per item use, it'd probably work out decent enough if you bought healing items instead of healing with spells thus skipping the spell animation.

26k frames behind? jesus. do you really think the last 2 battles will save *that* much time thanks to wise balls? I'm of the opinion that the following would end up faster, on the assumption that you can manipulate it, if the alternative (4 person raping of barubary) isn't practical due to all damaging unavoidable attacks: 1) get great bird 2) go to giant island on your way to evrai 3) get that shield that I got 4) rape barubary with w.fruits solo 5) ??? 6) profit!

Nice find, but I doubt it'll save any time. I'm sure a revisit will be faster then that technique.
I concur. Doing that would require a fair amount of time recharging the giga attack or whatever its name may be (I forget), which would be the time consuming portion of doing it that way. If it weren't an issue however, I'd possibly say it'd be faster.

and btw, are my entertainment trade-offs are worth the effort?
I'd say "not really." The text scrolls at a rate that's a bit faster than what'd probably be ideal for reading. It doesn't really add much more than a couple of pretty pictures for the scene. I think that was the only real entertainment trade-off I saw. Other than that, the run was looking great. Before you restart however, I would suggest getting to lashiec first and seeing if you can beat him as you are. If you're unable to, then it would be a massive time waster since you'd have to restart again to level earlier.

This movie certainly gets my yes vote for publication, however entertainment wise I can't help but think that dying to save time wasn't a good tradeoff. It just seemed a bit out of place, even if it was faster than the alternative. Either way, kickass movie guys.

IST: are you using the settings in the movie file (in particular sync sound) on a multicore cpu? If you are, and you're using the standard version of 1.43 (any improvement version up to 16 will also have the same problem), that will cause it to freeze/crash at a random point in time. Head here and grab the svn version linked on that page. It should sync fine and not crash on that version.

How peculiar. I just opened it up and it got to the title screen just fine. I'm using the E version, although I doubt that it'd matter in this case. It initialises save data, then I just had to press a button to get past the "initialisation complete" screen.

Can you define "run"? I opened it up in desmume and it started just fine. Admittedly, I had bios file/swi usage enabled, but it still started without them on a subsequent attempt.

Since the site is back up now, I can finally ask this question: Entertainment wise, would a TC2 run be preferable to watch with or without the healing touch used? In TC1, using the healing touch stops you from getting the full special bonus after completing each stage (outside of the 2 or 3 in which its usage is mandatory). Flipside is that TC1 essentially gives you the healing touch by default in terms of speed that you can select and do stuff. In TC2, the healing touch gives no penalties point wise in terms of usage, outside of using it in the 7 X missions where it gives a bonus for not using it ("No Healing Touch - 100 points" or such). TC2 has a hard mode, in which vital loss through normal operating procedures and vital loss speed is (seemingly( increased. While with TAS tools you can do things significantly faster than still humanely possible, it's still slower and laggier in terms of input speed than TC1 is (eg. TC1: swapping to another tool after an action takes 2 frames, in TC2, it can take anywhere between 3-10, depending on the action being taken and lag present). Anyway, the reason I'm asking this is that I'm just about up to the first operation where I can freely use the healing touch (op 7, PGS tumors), which I believe would (excluding the fact that the healing touch slows the timer) save significant time through significantly reduced syringe usage, as pgs tumors are a bitch in terms of vital loss when you get to the last of the lot. In a rough realtime test, I raised the vitals to 80, and tried to take them all out without the HT, and failed, as the vital loss got faster with each seperated one. The HT would basically halve or greater this loss, and I believe the amount of time it gives would be enough to complete like, 70% of all ops that it can be used on. tl;dr: Healing touch usage on all ops that allow it to save time, y/n?

*can't tell if that's sarcasm or not* Well I'm sure you understand what I'm trying to say even if I may have reworded it incorrectly. Just want to see what the usual TAS time would be if all attacks and souls were activated at the quickest frame possible and take advantage of boss movements as much as possible. I'm curious to find out if the time can go under 1:20 or not.
I'm not Sir VG, but I believe his post is in reference to gocha's second dsm that beats balore, after which he spelt out a little something with the destroyed crystals.

I think I'd have to agree with this. Yes vote. Given the sheer repetitiveness of the dungeon visuals and such, it looks even more annoying to play normally than say, phantasy star for sms.

My movie is about 1 second faster than his one at the end of the Short Sword room.
I knew it could be improved, and you did it magnificently. I never thought of crouch cancelling the backdash, but I was thinking that backdash jumping down slopes was bound to not be optimal.
DeSmuME works MUCH slowly on my computer and the making takes time a lot. Also, I'm not so familiar with DS games. So it's somewhat hard to continue the work to the end.
I think most people have this, although perhaps not quite as bad as you might have it. If you feel that it's looking kinda blah at the speed you emulate at, an avi will surely blow you away.
However, if someone guides me what I should do next, I can continue the work without worries.
In theory, if there wasn't lag associated with getting souls/killing stuff (like on a cart, unless you're pulling in like 6 souls at once with a dozen enemies dying on screen), I would have suggested 3 more axe armor souls, and possibly an axe. since there is significant lag however, I'd probably go with just the single soul, and make a run for the boss room. In regards to the boss itself, keep it low, even if you have to waste some frames to do so. Also, try to kill it as far to the left as you can scroll wise, so that you have less distance to travel after the cutscene.

That's quite the bit of information you've gathered there Catastrophe. Anyway, Level 8 isn't the highest you'll get, I'd imagine the lowest level you'd get would be at *least* 13, with the highest being anywhere between 17-20. In regards to some quick movement tests I did, the werebat morph has the fastest overall movement speed compared to anything else (66 for the initial value, compared to around 53/56 for normal/cat form), although I didn't accurately test jump kicking as I didn't find a good pattern to it, the highest speed it gets is 42. Magical ticket wise, you should probably manipulate so you can get one or two in the forest that follows the monastery, unless you planned to pick up additional tickets around the place instead of buying them. For now, that's about all I can think of in terms of things that would be of relevance.

Alternatively, you could use media player classic. File > open file > select the video file, then select them mp3 for the dub track. Then after the video has started playing, select Play > audio > whatever the commentary filename is called. It should work in theory.

DeSmuME lacks several things in regards to movie functionality currently, but if you consider the above, it more or less makes sense. The movie format isn't completely finalized, nor is the emulator. Essentially, if you want to do a TAS of MMZX, then you'll have to settle with doing it on normal mode for now.

Huh, I forgot to reply to this. Level 2 looks damn fucking good. The only thing I wonder is was it faster overall damage wise to use the machine gun on the boss as opposed to crush missiles? The damage output by crush varies, but it's definitely higher than the machine gun overall. Other than that, yeah. Shit's awesome, keep going.

I can't tell if you're talking to me, or Acheron86.
I was talking to you. I wouldn't write up a ridiculous length post in response to a small thing like "coming down to frame wars in the end". That line was from the first paragraph of about 7 that I wrote before changing my mind and just writing what I did. The idea of that paragraph was basically "slash points don't really mean shit in such small amounts, nor does 30exp. If you want to test the complete efficiency of every decision you make, you're going to have to beat dracula/etc every time to see if there's an improvement in the damage, which just wastes your own time."
I think "sacrifices frames for entertainment" is more of a special occasion thing, like getting the boss medal or the Book of Secrets.
I'm of the opinion that if you get one boss medal, you're thusly required to get them all to stay consistent, which would cost you a *lot* of time as you get further into the run. And it wouldn't be near as awesome looking as the alternative.
It was more of a question of what you want to see out of this run. If I didn't care what you thought, I wouldn't ask.
Something that looks impressive. Something that'll make me go "that was a cool fight." Something that'll make me feel satisfied in a way I've never felt before (this is a hard one I'll admit, but cpadolf did it perfectly in his contra 4 wip).
What if I come back with good proof that level 2 really is faster? I don't expect that I will. Just saying.
That in and of itself is impossible. The amount of time you spend slashing at enemies to gain the experience required for level 2 is more than the boss takes without it. Also, you get the level up animation. If, however, you were to get a sword glyph and beat the boss with that at level 1, it may or may not turn out to be more efficient than the way I did it. I didn't bother testing since it required something like an extra 200 or so frames total to get and equip, so I doubt that it's faster, although that's where the possibility would be.

I was goign to write up a reasonably long post replying to most of the things you pointed towards Catastrophe, but I don't think I can do it without coming off as an arrogant asshole, mostly due to a lack of direct response to each individual argument/counterpoint of which there are a lot. A single line I will take from what I wrote though and say here:
If this is your plan, you've got a hellish task ahead of you.
