I didn't say it was practical, I was pretty much just saying in a roundabout way that having to pause every time isn't true.

and don't say it can be re aligned in mid game. that would require a pause. it's fine to say it's okay, but not for that reason.
pull out control, set stick in opposite of desired direction, plug back in. no pause required.

If this were a poll I would vote yes. you can do it on a console, so it isn't anything special you have over other players.

i think it should be fair game, given that you can actually do it on the console (albeit you have to either use a 3rd party control or modify your original/take its casing off to do so). whether this game takes advantage of it or not is another story, but the point still stands that spezzafer used it in his run, and it was published, so it doesn't appear to a no go zone.

I have no idea on if this would actually affect the speed of your run, but during your test run, and what you've done so far, the buttons pressed thingy down the bottom of mupen only shows 2 out of 3 force for the main direction being pushed (eg. if you check spezzafers run you'd see that it shows 3 up/1 or 2 left at the start when going towards the castle). Just a suggestion to see if it does indeed make a difference. but so far nice progress on the actual run, keep it up!

I think he is reffering to the Tonoe dungeon where you get the alshline (its called basement iirc).

I vote no, for these reasons: a) played on easy b) rather repetetive c) died in the bonus stages Sure it was fast, but you played on an easy difficulty (where the cpu would be rather dumb, and quite prone to dying without putting up any sort of fight) despite a harder difficulty being available. repetetive is pretty self explanitory, you mostly used fox's reflector for the entire thing, which was rather stale. and bonus stages, while dying makes sense for speed purposes, finishing them as fast as unhumanly possible would be much more entertaining to watch imo. just my 2 cents.

That was awesome. I definitely like the way it looks, keep up that killer work Frenom :D Something whacky that I think would be cool but would totally not work would be going through the whole game without a random battle. it'd be cool since you'd just shoot through the game without anything slowing you down, but the bosses would absolutely annihilate you (I can think of at least 3 bosses off the top of my head that would slaughter you in a single hit, all of them being dark force).

Does the pause show up in an .avi movie?
I believe it certainly would, as the music in the background still plays regardless of settings. eg this avi (4.5MB) eliminates ~95% of the lag that you get with normal plugin settings, but the flip side is that you'd have to play the whole movie with those settings (dont know about your machine, but that one option drops it to about 10fps on my machine), since changing them at any point would desync the movie for the watcher who would have to change them to keep it in sync (which would be over the top irritating). That avi was made with Jabo's Direct3D8 1.6 plugin with the 'copy framebuffer to RDRAM' option checked.

maybe a consideration if you have extreme luck manipulation (should you decide to do the run): The sword that you can get (as an enemy drop) in zio's fort, while utter shit, has that ever so handy side ability of instant death on occasion, just like the genocy (sp?) claw and the elsydeon (not sure of any other weapons with this property). if enough enemies are weak to instant death, regardless of the chance required, it may be worth looking into.

Maybe it's just me, but it looks like there is still more lag when approaching the sub (before exiting the tunnel) than in that other video Atma posted a couple pages back.
While it isn't just you, that video was taken from an older obseleted SDA run that i had lying around that I saw had no lag at that particular point, thus done on actual hardware. Still, it looks like it probably shouldn't lag there depending on what angle you use. but in relation to the actual progress of the run now, only one word came to mind: DUDE.

Unless the (E) version works in mupen, you'll likely have no such luck making any sort of TAS for this game. Since, plain and simple, it dont work (cuts out at the rare logo in both 1.0 (U)[!] and 1.1 (U)[!]).

here is a potential idea for you spezzafer, if you have to board the sub to open bowsers second level. It would seemingly avoid the lag present in your current movie, which would save a small amount of time.

if you're meaning the top of the tower star, you can't raise the cannon until you've gotten that star, but if you could it'd probably be faster. edit - nrg beat me to the point.

It would seem (to me) that avi recording is still somewhat bugged in alpha5. When recording, the mupen window stays ontop of all others, and if minimised it doesn't capture the video, while still capturing sound (a reasonable annoyance given the size of the window). More importantly, when recording (using jabo's direct3d8 1.6), it gets to frame 9920 of spezzafer's movie (or at least thats where the counter stops, it'd be within 10 frames of that i'd think) and then craps out in terms of video recording. It still records the audio, but the video no longer gets recorded and thus the last image you see when watching the avi file is mario holding up a star to open a door. when that happens, the playback speed goes from recording slow (about 5-10fps for me) to normal playback speed, and causes some weird stuff to happen with the emulator until its closed. Is this just me or is this happening to others who try recording avi with alpha5?

Your new run is definitely much more impressive so far spezzafer (not that your old one didn't make me go 'wtf?' multiple times), keep up the good work :)

Thought I'd give a little update, so here's my progress on the any% so far (i hate forcing souls sometimes, so I decided to do this one first, not to mention gaming season is upcoming), goes up to the entrance of the floating garden now.

dont know if it's just my system or not, but it looks like both 2xSai and Super 2xSai dont work in v13, they both crash upon loading a rom with it enabled as the filter.

[There is a trick to Balore which makes him have a very VERY fast fight. If you haven't seen it in WIP form, you can stand on his hands. They're at the perfect height to do fast slashes on his eyes. For Graham 2, you can manipulate his hands to operate to your liking. If I were you, I would test how Medusa + Kicker Skeleton would work on Graham 2, just in case. I can't remember if you can get an infinite combo on him with it.
I tried medusa + kicker skeleton, but didn't get anywhere from it, not to mention it was doing 1 damage. I didn't see the balore WIP, which would probably help me out given that balore is probably my worst boss. I still need to find out how to manipulate grahams hands, and probably death/balore too (graham himself isn't too hard to manipulate)
The Chaos Ring will definitely be necessary for Chaos 1 and 2. You will save a minute, if not more, by using Red Minotaur a lot. All you have to worry about is decimating the red soul keeper in Chaos 1 and then avoiding the yellow soul keeper's drain power. Then, it's all clean sailing.
Yeah, i ended up testing that out, i'm pretty sure skyfish will help it be done even faster, but not by too much.
As for your weapon, I would suggest you go with Baselard -> Combat Knife -> Whip Knuckle/Hrunting -> Laevatain as your weapon sets. They're all the fast hit types, and they're all on a generic path. Also, you can get these weapons all before the harder bosses (Balore, Legion, Graham) pretty simply, and getting Laevatain leaves a few choices for you. There is a possible drop right before and right after the underground cemetary. There is also a loose Laevatain in the Arena, right after a few Red Minotaurs (equates to good exp and the best shooter).
Baselard is a surefire thing (got it already in the revised run), Combat Knife i'll have to work on, going to skip the Hrunting/Whip Knuckle and go right to the Laevatain (pondering whether to get a drop from flame demon vs. going through red minotaurs, since it'd almost certainly be faster that way, and i can pick up the RM soul later). I decided to get the Claimh Solais anyways since i have to go to the forbidden area for mudman's soul, and it shouldn't take very long to get it from there after that (with the CS lubicant/kyoma demon/triton, i was about to beat legion in about 7 seconds, as opposed to > 1 minute). Overall, i think getting the CS will prove to be a better timesaver than avoiding it (at least in 100% soul). I think the hardest thing to do will be get a few specific souls that i only have one or two chances to get in my planned route (eg. blue bird, i only see four of those in total, only one red bird, two buers etc.). oh well, will be interesting (and annoying) to pull it off :P Any idea on if it'd be worth it manipulating a black belt to drop? (and since i'm going for no damage, i'm going to try to get some rotten food to drop, since it doesn't seem to be too rare in comparison to the CK; lubicant for the win!). and finally (for this post at least, 8 hours after i started writing it) i found out where those initial extra frames came from: 6 from 'start from power-on' as opposed to 'start from reset', and the rest were from specific timing in pressing a during talking.

I'm sure this will bite me in the ass if i were to follow it for an all souls run, but here is my initial planning route. after doing it, i realised a couple of significant flaws in it, but given how far out of the way I'd have to go to adjust it. Who knows how much extra time it will take to kill graham form 2 (not to mention balore), given i wont have the claimh solais, at best I'd have the mysteltain unless i forced a final sword to drop, even though it could potentially waste a lot of time given you can't cancel its swinging animation, not to mention i'd have to kill 2 final guards, unless in some ungodly fashion i got the sword and the soul on the same frame. The only items i'll potentially force a drop of are baselard, maybe a combat knife, and maybe a final sword. other than that, i'll probably be decently off otherwise, but time will tell. something i tested on a semi-reasonable file was vs. chaos. the last soul you get is the shadow knight one, and a rough test took me around 2500 frames to get back to the chaos ring, so it'd take a little less to get back. the question is, would it save me > 5000 frames by having it vs chaos? red minotaur spammage could save a lot of time I suppose, but mana prisms or such would solve that, though i dont think i'd have too many of those unless i went relatively out of the way to get them. Zurreco: yep, i'm using the same rom as you are, dont know what the difference is, given your most recent run is about the same faster than your old ones (you start around frame 2180, the others start about 2280). There's no real point in putting in a name since simply pressing start is faster.

I decided I will do the 100% soul run, but like you said Zurreco, planning a route is hard stuff. my initial progress This is a test run of course, given that I'm not using the <dont really know the timing> dash jump thing in your avatar, and i haven't really decided on a route yet, but the idea would be to get souls as early as possible, unless i'm able to encounter an enemy much later when i can kill it a lot faster (or if they help me destroy bosses/ enemies significantly faster; the only one i'm really missing right now that can do that is the creaking skull, given i couldn't find a frame within 100 that it would drop it on). Also, given that this is a different type of run, would it (dash thing)be something you'd like to watch being done for 3/4 of the run? albeit it would seem to save a significant number of frames over the course of the run up until the black panter soul, I don't think it'd look that good for it, but eh. For some reason I seem to start around 120 or so frames later than you do in your earlier glitch vbm, is that related to 'start from reset' as opposed to 'start from power-on'?

albeit a little late, and perhaps a bad idea even, but for the stages of which you want the EX skills, did you consider using an/some A rank elf/s (though you probably have to go out of the way to get them, its been a while since I played)?

this one would probably turn out to be a complicated (to do) request, but i'll ask it anyways: would it be possible to make it so that you can map shortcuts (eg frame advance, save <state>, load <state>, etc.) to a controller? for example, if i was using a ps2 pad i'd have 4 unused buttons, which could be put to more useful functions. just wondering, since i have 3+ gamepads that i use for emulators, and none of them work conveniently when recording (having to keep a hand on the keyboard for frame advance for example).
