You prefer shorter and ambiguous answers so people aren't quite sure what you're thinking and can't hold it against you later if they want to call you on it. This is not a knock on you at all btw I just think that wouldn't quite cut it for this kind of thread. I'm also worried it would be turned into a theological debate after the first question which would kinda suck imo.
Wow. I am actually surprised.* Your analysis is very good. *) This is not to say that I had any bad expectations from you. It is just that I'm not used to being analysed spot-on.

It's just an attempt to create something worth reading instead of "rridgway can you stop sucking so much lol", and I don't really think attempts to improve stuff need to be justified.
I think that's not only justified, it's commendable.

Fabian, what actions do you suggest for the administration / moderators to carry out for the purpose of making the forums better? Or were you referring to only Off-topic in particular? Also, should I start an "ask Bisqwit" thread?

The problem with looking for "makes sense" is that a lot of runs make no sense. Hell, some submission texts even say, "If ______ happens, no, it's not a desynch".
Indeed. But for a computer, the problem is far more profound. Even writing a program that identifies which object on the screen is the player character, is something I would refuse to do because it is too difficult (without extensively customized algorithms for each and every game), let alone understand what the character is doing and how it's faring.

We have this Super Pitfall video here. http://tasvideos.org/movies.cgi?name=pitfall Other than that, I don't know. Is this off-topic?

A prime example of how not to post. Locking the thread. RyanM561, if your issue is not resolved yet, post it in the relevant thread (thread by the game's name if it relates to some game).

Well, they do boast 100000 members, which compared to our ~1500 (would-be 3000 if I didn't run purge once in a while) is rather impressive.

I was able to compile it blahblahblah, and it seems to run games and produce sound. AVI recording not tried yet.

The information submitted by pcc for review looks all right to me. I don't currently see a reason why movies made with this emulator could not be permitted. Does anyone else? If not, then the Rules can be updated and the site code to handle the movies for this system.

Can you tell the bot to try another ROM if he uses the wrong one?
Manually, sure. But what's the point of "automatic" if it's not actually automatic? Notice the thread title. Or are you implying that the bot could somehow see as it watches the movie, "oops, this must be the wrong ROM because the player character is doing actions that don't make any sense"? Not doable without a highly intelligent AI. For the explanation of the algorithm currently employed for maximizing the chances of finding the right ROM, see the first post of this thread.

Quite an interesting trend. It seems that among the people who visit this site usage of IE is steadily decreasing, the opposite being true with the Mozilla browsers (I assume the vast majority of those is Firefox?)
There was a slight setback in June (IE and Opera gained at the expense of Mozilla). I assume the majority of Mozilla is Firefox; Webalizer doesn't tell me because I have set it ignore details like that. Edit: Here's an updated growth graph of the site's traffic (not distinguishing different browsers).

The purpose of the algorithm is to produce interesting & eye-pleasing screenshots of the movie without requiring user aid. If you have better ideas for how to implement that, sure, I'm listening :)

It was this here which is what it made it useful.
You are absolutely right. My own purpose for it was originally to have a look at that list and see if there's something interesting in the list of 100 submissions. Now I have much less used it so.. but I have much less judged movies, too.

How long does it take to run this entire process for a modest-sized (20 minutes or so) movie (that isn't GB, so colors > 4)?
It depends entirely on how fast the emulator can execute (not on the number of colors). By average, they seem to run at around 200 fps.

Is the current yes/meh/no poll for submitted movies kind of super-unofficially a 0%-50%-100% rating, with people who say stuff like "marginal yes vote" kind of going in between those values?
I guess, it might be something like that. Though the discussion still has a much higher effect on the judging than the numbers or choices can have.

That gives me an idea. How about abolishing the poll and instead, rating the submission as publications are rated now? Ratings would transfer/extend to the published movie once it's published. To better help judges, it could also represent the ratings graphically to show the distribution of votes.

Without answering the poll, I'll post here some thoughts I have on the issue. The question cannot be "should this movie be published". The person who votes in the poll is not a judge. They are usually able to say how they liked the movie, but they are not able to determine what is good for the site and what is not. For example, they may think that some movie is bad, but that it should be published anyway because no movie of that game has been done before. Wrong. Some newbies do not even know what does it mean, "published". Aren't they already published when the movie is submitted? What sense does it make to move it from one page to another? Some have even mocked the term "published", as that it constitutes of plastering the site's logo over the movie. That being said, I recognize that there are shortcomings in the current question too...

Which is more important, generally, real time, or in-game time?
In-game time for those who want to compare with human-only playing performances. I hold real time more important.

I liked Castlevania and Goonies 2. But TMNT was not a Konami game, was it?

Of course, as has been pointed out, most consoles don't run code from RAM, so this is just not possible.
Only if you can corrupt the stack, you can make it run code from RAM -- but only new program code also created via memory corruption; it cannot change existing program code.
