I'm aware of it. Somehow, loading of savestates causes emulation corruption. Edit: With valgrind, I tracked some errors in the savestate code, trying again now.

[TODO]: rewrite this message consisting of scattered quotes into a coherent form. Summary: NesVideoAgent has been editing submissions adding a pile of screenshots into them. ---- It uses an algorithm to try to find out interesting shots. It gives each frame a value based on how much action is there and how little monotonous the screen is, and then splits the movie into N pieces and finds the M most interesting pieces, and then picks the most interesting frame from each of those pieces. Action = sprites move. It ignores screen scrolling. It is rather difficult coming up with an aesthetically pleasing algorithm. I got some chuckles when I first saw how the bot took literally what I wrote and completely ignored the meaning behind it. So computerlike. It totally exposed the holes in my algorithm that I didn't think of. Re: cleaning up ROM names-- Hmm, yeah it cleans up them in the process as it verifies which ROM works. Re: purpose-- The purpose, idea behind it is to give an insight of the new movie as someone submits a movie of some never-heard-before game. But there are so few pending submissions so I ran it on a select few old submissions. Screenshots often tell a lot.

As the author pointed out to me, this movie was initially published with wrong AVI file! The AVI showed the author's cancelled movie, which was not intended to be published -- the AVI has now been replaced and is five seconds faster! Please redownload if you got the wrong file :)

Notice to publishers: When you create new player entries, or just publish movies in general, please go check http://tasvideos.org/Players-List.html to ensure that the newly created player entry has a link to the accounts related to the player entry. Also, avoid creating duplicate player entries. Xipo had two just recently. I updated this list so that it now lists the number of accounts related to the player entry right next to the "Edit" link, or a bold (!) if there are none.

Been a long time, but here's a give-away secret: Hold M while refreshing the score screen to see all available movies. http://bisqwit.iki.fi/jsgames/peterbox/

Reported a few times. It's an accepted casualty of the current design.

You are not the first. However, the previous movie was rejected, because 1) it's aimed to be as close duplicate of an existing movie as possible and 2) it failed to do that. You, however, said: This is rather performance thinking much than the speed thinking much. This movie goes until 4-1 before it does anything even remotely interesting by our standards (some syncing to music can be observed). You can post this at Youtube, but TASvideos is wrong media for it.

I'm just really curious why the final whip upgrade wasn't picked up. Is it just that it takes too many frames to do the power up animation?
Precisely. By keeping the number of hearts below 8 at most times, the player was able to collect lots of bonuses without having to spawn the whip upgrade on screen again and again. The second whip upgrade does not show up before the number of hearts >= 8, and when it does, it will show up until the player takes it (but not twice on the same screen), denying any other bonuses (except those which are predetermined, such as the three after large heart in stage 10). (Similar for first whip upgrade and number of hearts >= 4.)

For fun and technical experimentation, I created this AVI. http://tracker.tasvideos.org/NTSCDEMO-castlevania-tas.avi.torrent (21 MB) It is a 602x448 resolution AVI of the last two stages of this movie. I used Blargg's NTSC library which I patched into FCEU, and added an interlacing mechanism, to simulate authentic TV viewing. Obviously it is not as good quality as the published movie... but it is an experiment. Perhaps someone else will be interested of the results as well. The jitter in the window grating in Dracula's upstairs is mostly due to chroma subsampling in H.264, not due to NTSC filtering though. (I mean, there should be jittering, but not that strong.)

EDIT: oh silly me for not looking at the referrers, shouldn't it be linked to somewhere other than the Text Formating Rules though?
Yes, it should. In fact it is linked from the forums, in a thread whose name calls to fix inconstencies in the game names, in the Sites forum. (Too laggy right now to look it up.) But, got any idea where to add a link to it?

In this game, the turtle asks 6 or 7 times (I don't remember which) whether the player wants to open the box (differently worded each time). If he opens it after the second, third or the second last question, he gets punishment. If he opens it after any other question, including the first, he gets reward. If he refuses at the last time, the box remains closed and will not be seen again. Edit: And how do I know? Well I wanted to know where the leftside path under water takes, so I played... The water place is quite a difficult maze with some traps.

This problem has recurred occasionally. It may have something to do with CR characters intermixed with LF. I will take a look at the problem.

Here's a good way to format your submission
Good, but not recommendable without some slight improvements. Most of the %%% were completely redundant. I would delete the support for %%% if only there weren't the borderline cases where it's actually needed :) Also, you should use !! instead of ! for mainlevel headers so that you can use ! for subheaders, such as making a new header for each "level" in the "Notes on certain levels" section.

It seems like you are saying that publishing this TAS would interfere with your morals
May seem so, but I did not explicitly say so. :) That post was a response to FODA's words "MAYBE you're just boring and too worried about looking serious?" ; I explained why I'm trying to look serious, and went to explain my policy. It does not, however, judge this submission in that same sentence. It does judge the consequences supposed from publishing this movie. A fine difference. But whether those suppositions are correct, I wanted to leave open for discussion. And I believe, at least with 40% of my mind, that a possibility has been shown that they weren't. :) (Why am I smiling? Because I am amused by the level of haziness in this post.)

One comic strip that comes to mind is nuklear power. http://www.nuklearpower.com/
I know there are lots of gaming related web comics. But whether that scene has been covered...

I've been thinking of offering an alphabetical list of movies, without extra information or screenshots, instead. Although, this is already close to that: http://tasvideos.org/ListAllMovies.html

It's the Japanese and the "not invented here" syndrome. They use lharc because it works and is Japanese.

I would still like to clarify that my only concern is with the immature obsession towards "HEY, SEX, HAHAHA" that the author manifests with this movie (and the submission text) and the occasional responses in this thread that manifest it. That obsession made me emphasize my "no" vote, and those responses make me doubt whether this movie is good idea to be published. And since everyone seems to be arguing with Phil here... Remember, Phil is not a judge here; although he may contribute to a discussion just like anyone else, his words carry no more weight than anyone else's. Do not get too heated up. (Pun not intended).

mushroom, I did not mean to retort that you were doing that. I simply meant that people are taking my words as if they mean more than they do. Or perhaps someone else's words. I mean, from my point of view, discussion is already over, all things have been covered, and bashing Phil or Phil bashing someone does not contribute towards any good conclusion at all.

Falling Mario http://youtube.com/watch?v=Vh2ig6GDatE
That minor tuned music is weird at first glance.. hearing, but it is actually pretty good. The ending complemented it all. There is no end to Mario's misery! No limit to "what SMB would be like in Hell". This reminds me, I wonder if anyone has ever drawn a comic strip showing Mario's _real_ reactions to when Princess says "Thank you Mario! Your quest is over. We present you a new quest" after Mario saves her. Mario would go, utter disbelief on his face, "O_o but I just saved you... were you just playing all along"? And Koopa would come back brushing off the fake lava from his shell and laugh merrily with Princess and Princess would explain "but you love so much those platform puzzles, we're doing this all for you!" And Mario would be completely wrecked realizing that while he has worked hard risking his life on multiple occasions, Princess was actually in no danger of any kind at all.

Also, at 06:19—06:22 in the AVI, two subtitle captions appear for just a frame or so. I guess this is a typo of sorts? The timing appears correct in Bisqwit's subtitle timeline a few posts above.
"Welcome to the Palace of Dragon King", and "Please relax and enjoy your stay"? They are visible for about 3 seconds both for me...
