Well, if you go on the Pokémon line, make sure that you understand about everything that has been done to make the existing Pokémon runs happen. Read the techniques, read the author's comments, etc. Decide what your aim is, and create a plan to see how to accomplish that plan. Do notice that you are competing against experienced players. You need to learn about luck manipulation, frame advance and stuff like that. It only comes through experience, so start experimenting. EDIT: If you want to train yourself, getting used to the making of TAS movies, I would recommend (per DeHackEd's idea) that you play Super Mario Bros, on FCEU. Not to beat the existing movie, but to try to match it.

Okay, then observe, that my nickname is spelled Bisqwit You have spelled it wrong so many times without even noticing it, and then when someone linked to an article about "Bisquik", you commented as if you thought that was about me, when it obviously was not. I found it offensive. I repeat. Bisqwit Do not be stupid and misspell my name over and over again.

he's passing through enemies altogether. So what are those speedups doing that makes this possible?
Nemo2342, your question is answered here: http://tasvideos.org/CommonTricks.html#fast_motion_collision_abuse_ In short, "motion" in a motion picture is about being somewhere in one picture and somewhere else in the other picture. When moving fast enough, there exists no picture where you are inside the enemy -- you just teleport through it. Because of reasons of limited processing power (or sometimes, programmers' laziness), the game only checks each instant that are being displayed on screen, and does not extrapolate paths and movement to find out what supposedly happens between two frames. This is called quantization of time, or iteration, if I recall correctly.

Here is a possibility. Perhaps we can take the guarantee that 81 -> reset and 82 -> power-on, but due to compression it cannot be assumed that reset -> 81 nor power-on -> 82? (Read the '->' symbol as 'implies'.)
No, these values are correct. It is only if the power-on or reset does not happen at the first frame (i.e. there's delay before the reset/poweron happens), that the byte may be different from 81 or 82. By the way, I remind that there exists this cool FCM parser which tells you what each byte means. http://bisqwit.iki.fi/utils/fcmparser.php

There's a lot of weird noise in the soundtrack of this game. In the desert music particularly (super dry dance), there's morse signalling at the background. It says...
-.-. --.- CQ にね
-.-. --.- CQ にね

-.. . DE ほへ

.--- --- JO をれ
.-- -- WM やー
.... .--. HP ぬつ
-.. - DT ほむ

.--. -..- PX つま

-.-. --.- CQ にね
-.-. C に
I included both the western and Japanese morse interpretations in this. I understand CQ, but I don't understand the rest.

Oh. I did not know bad spelling is a symptom of the Tourette syndrome. Anyway, please read the FAQs before asking questions. We cannot go giving personal answers to each of the thousand people who ask the same questions over and over again. (The reason you don't see thousand people asking those questions is because they realize to read the FAQs.)

I'm sorry, but I don't understand what you mean / refer to. EDIT: Yes, you are right. I see what you meant now. I did not include the item1 used in the previous screen in the sums. Fixing.

I have considered maintaining an emulator download site, but I don't really know what's going on with the emulators' development, and with most of the development going into Windows-only sections of them (as in, the changes made into them make the Windows version incompatible to other platforms versions), I don't even care to know. I can't maintain a download site for something I don't understand myself. For example, I have no idea what are the differences between each FCEU release after 0.98.12 -- except that .12 worked on Linux, and consequent versions did less so.

Cool: * Drug store that sells bats * Overall charisma of this game (musics, graphics, the humor) * Guys apologizing in the middle of battle, etc * Wildlife, esp. mouses (esp. Exit mouse, and that the alien in scene 22 snatched the mouse too) * The girl dragging a teddybear with her (and the fact that the teddybear participated in battles, even though it is completely inanimate) * Apply Kid's inventions * Extensively used variable width font * The ceiling decorations of the palace in Dalaam looks very well-matching with its name * The scenes around the Phase Distorter(s) were rather startling... in many ways. * In the credits, Ness's Dad is represented by a telephone. Jeff looks just like Ochi in Hikaru no Go. In the flashback, people didn't show. Was this an error in the game? At least there was a typo after beating the nightmare ("unverse"). It took plenty of hours for me to watch this movie entirely. Ps: This will make the second biggest published AVI file so far. Possible improvement: Fill in the player's name at the second chance. At the first chance, enter something very short.

After my first attempt at viewing this movie resulted in a desynced, I spotted something and decided to ask... Is there some reason you selected "fake mute workaround" for this movie? * Second try: Desynced after "Pokey joins you". * Third try: No desync when I loaded the movie only after the title screen had been seen.

When Firefox cannot find a DNS address, it automatically tries again by putting www. in the front of the address. It sounds like in your case, Firefox had trouble resolving the tasvideos.org DNS address. Others have reported similar problems recently. Maybe the DNS registrar I bought this address from is not very stable... Or maybe it's just a transitional problem somewhere else.

I've never seen a single spambot post on this forum, so this mostly seems like a hypothetical discussion. But perhaps that's because they are deleted at once instead of being filtered at sign-up.
There has been at least one incident of a spammer posting advertisements on these forums (it was deleted at once), and about 50 incidents of spammers registering an account with a pornsite or drugselling site URL in their profile (activated or not activated). Naturally, I delete them as soon as I notice them. Since the changes I did that I described in this post, there has been zero of either kind, even though there have been about 30 new registrations.

in Wily3, where finalfighter takes damage.
Hmm... indeed. I did not try it. I will compare them. EDIT: Done, results: Old: switch to Item1 (−40); take damage (−40); zip (+0) = −80 New: switch to Wood (−60); shoot; wait for shot to disappear; refill (−80); switch to Item1 (−60); zip hopefully faster (+22) = −178 The refill way is 98 frames slower. (Demonstrated in the previous post, see megaman2w3comp.avi). To profit, gains otherwhere should be greater than 98 frames. Unlikely. I used the Wood weapon because it is the fastest in dealing with the shotman. With metal blades, for example, multiple hits would be required to destroy it. Edit: I tried to see if there are more locations where Item1 is useful. Hence, added megaman2w2comp2.avi into the previous post. Turns out that one is not useful. Edit: Actually, I am surprised. I thought the refill costs 40 frames, but it really costs 80 frames. :o It is twice as slow as Rockman 1. This means that the minimum gain from an Item1 to be profitable is 17 frames. If it does less, it should not be used. Re-evaluating the Item1 usage. OPTION 1. * Two extra item1s in Wily1 give 51 frames and 18 frames, 69 in total. * Three extra item1s in Wily2 give 49 frames. = 118 frames in total. Refill takes 80 frames. → Remain 38 frames of win. Note: Damage costs 40 frames. The refill must be taken without the extra damage that was seen in megaman2w2ref2. If extra damage is taken, the winning turns into ~2 frames of cost. If this does not work, we have to use option 2: OPTION 2. * Use Item3 in Wily1 beginning (saves two Item1s), then two extra Item1s. Costs 40 (weapon switch from Item3 to Item1), gives 69. 29 frames win. * No extra item1s in Wily2, no refills. → 29 frames of no-risk winning. Note: A combination of Option 1 and 2 is not possible. If the third refill is taken in Wily2, it will fill Item1 into its fullest capacity, regardless of how many Item1s we used in Wily1. Thus there is no winning to be gained by saving Item1s in Wily1, if the refill is taken.

Time to share some of our (Shinryuu, Finalfighter, Bisqwit) plans for the Wily stages. Maybe some people find it interesting. https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/megaman2comp.avi (460 kB)
Comparing the scrolling trick and regular path in Wily2. Observe, that the scrolling trick costs about 38 frames. Incidentally, that is precisely the same number of frames BisqBot had to idle inside the wall to make it happen. Thus, even in the best case, it would not be faster than the regular way.
https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/megaman2w2ref.avi (380 kB)
Demonstrates an effecient way of acquiring a weapon refill in Wily2. Two aspects are at core here: 1. Shooting the leaves to the left, so that they disappear faster (weapon switch is not possible while they are on screen) 2. Creating a situation so that the refill zips through the wall to far ahead location, so that Rockman can walk to catch it, utilizing effectively the time that must be waited before weapon switch is possible.
https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/megaman2w2ref2.avi (620 kB)
Demonstrates that despite the strategy mentioned above, there's still some trouble in the refill. Namely, when the weapons are switched, the enemies regenerate in the wall. Observe, that they did not regenerate when weapons were not switched.
https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/megaman2w2comp.avi (1320 kB)
Compared three different methods of playing a part of the Wily2 stage. * Left: Two item1s for elevation, one for avoiding damage, then take damage. * Middle: Two item1s for elevation, use Flash stopper. It is 8 frames faster than on the Left. * Right: One item1 for elevation, two for avoiding damage. It is 49 frames faster than on the Middle.
https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/megaman2w1comp.avi (400 kB)
Ninja master Finalfighter pointed out that Shinryuu's method of playing in this location (shown on the left) was not perfect. I applied Finalfighter's suggestion (on the middle) and improved it further (on the right).
https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/megaman2w1comp2.avi (250 kB)
Demonstrates the difference from using an extra Item1 in this location. The difference is 18 frames.
https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/megaman2w4comp.avi (990 kB)
Compared four different methods of playing the end part of the Wily4 stage. * Top-left: Utilizing item1slight technique. Cost: (1+3)xitem1. Gain: 18 frames. * Top-right: Utilizing item1boost technique. Cost: (1+3)xitem1. Gain: 4 frames. * Bottom-left: Normal item1-zipping technique. Cost: (1+2)xitem1. Gain: 0 frames. * Bottom-right: Saving item1s, using item3s instead. Gain: about −60 frames. The frame numbers were in comparison to Finalfighter &co's movie. Note that according to the item1-usage plans below, we can only afford three item1s here (1+2).
https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/megaman2w3comp.avi (460 kB)
In response to Hanzou's idea -- demonstrating the difference of taking or not taking refill in Wily3. On the top, regular way. On the bottom, refill way. The refill way is 98 frames slower.
https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/megaman2w4comp2.avi (820 kB)
If you were a rich man and had lots of Item1s, what would you do? Turns out, this is not what you should do. It is 14 frames slower this way than the Item3-way that Finalfighter demonstrated in this stage, Wily4.
Item1-usage The item1 power meter has power for 14 item1s in total. A big refill restores the power of 5 item1s. Finalfighter and Morimoto's movie goes as follows: * In Wily1: ** Use 1+1+2+3+3, 4 remain. * In Wily2: ** Refill 10, now 14 remain. ** Use 2+1, 11 remain. * In Wily3: ** Use 1. 10 remain. * In Wily4: ** Use 1+3+1+2, 3 remain. * In Wily5: ** Use 3, 0 remain. Our plan goes as follows: * In Wily1: ** Use 1+1+3+1+3+3, 2 remain. * In Wily2: ** Refill 10, now 12 remain. ** Use 2+1, 9 remain. ** Refill 5, now 14 remain. ** Use 1+2, 11 remain. * The rest, as Finalfighter and Morimoto did. Where can we get more Item1s? It would be useful to have them in Wily3 and Wily4. [Edit: updated links]
