Is there someone else who has feedback of this movie?

The tunnel trick would be very useful if it could be done here too: Unfortunately I haven't yet found a way to jump in between of those two goombas before the second one exits the tunnel. However, I verified that it's possible to stomp them in a tunnel. It can even give Mario a forward boost due to getting inside the wall for a moment.

Indeed it is possible. I updated the 1-2 level to match your idea. Both the fmv-zip in the submission and the fcm-zip posted earlier in this thread have been updated. (This is the second time you catch me violating my own guidelines at this game - not drooling enough.) EDIT: I updated the submission actually twice. The second time I chose to go through this little tunnel over here:

In the first part (shown below) it is indeed possible. It was originally deferred because it affected the position of the lifts later on, but it's not a reason anymore. In the second part, shown in the second image, it's not possible. There is not enough room to reach the second pipe without delay, going under isn't a viable choice either, because then you can't reach the third pipe without delay. EDIT: Forget the preceding parts in this message. I was wrong!

You should have copypasted the submission text source, not the HTML-formatted output. :)

If your Batman movie ends up being the same length or slower tan Linnom's movie and has the same defining attribute (no damage), I will reject your submission. Reasons: - If your usage of weapons over Linnom's usage of fists brings no actual benefit, it's not something I prefer. I think Linnom's movie does not lack entertainment. - I don't like to backstab movie authors. If you ignore the "no damage" aspect, you still need to surpass Linnom's result by wider marginal than with "no damage" mode. (I can't say exactly how wide.) Ps: nice new avatar.

Seems FCEU doesn't load the save ram when a movie is played...o_O
I mentioned in some earlier post that SMB2j writes into its own diskette (image), and that FCEU doesn't load/save this data along with the movie. I'm glad to hear your method worked.

Approach of the ninja looked less impressive to me than it did in Linnom's version. I'd say also the same about the match against the boss, but since it's possible that my memory is over-appreciating Linnom's run, I should actually compare them. I liked your intelligent usage of different weapons. That's what I want to see more.

Now that would be sweet! ^^
Phil is already working on that. It will be done with the SNES version, because rumour says the NES version requires some crazy time wasting deeds (like completing the game 8 times in row) until those bonus levels are unlocked.

Therefore I wonder why some of the techniques in Wrath of the Black Manta *require* to press opposing directions simultaneously. And I even could do it with a regular NES controller and a console that were installed in a shop for demonstration (> 10 years ago, of course).

Thanks Bisqwit! Now I can finally watch the Famtasia submissions too! Oh, and the movie is a Yes vote!
Thanks. But beware that nesmock isn't a magical solution - for example, Kopernical's Mega Man 3 movie seems to be nearly impossible to convert automatically. The jumps just don't reach/time correctly without essentially replaying it completely :-/

Great idea with the nesmock, it's just that I don't know how to use it. Couldn't you (anyone) make a exe file out of it so you only need to open it via DOS or something?
There already is one. Take the -win32 zip. Though, I need to build one for the most recent version too. Edit: It's there now.

2. the current web directory (relative to the web page)
This doesn't work. According to my logs, no browser checks the current directory. (And I'd hate the spam if they did.)
3. put the following tag in the <head> section of the web page. <link rel="shortcut icon" href="images/favicon.ico" type="image/x-icon" />
Thanks, that's what I was looking for.

On the risk of stating the obvious, still many need to do that.

How do I put a favicon.ico up? I don't want it to cover the whole bisqwit.iki.fi site.

Since the wiki-style version of my site was published in June, there has existed a possibility to include separate subtitle files along with the movie. However there's no way to submit them or to enter them to the movie entry, aside from manual passing of files and direct database manipulation. Think of it as an undocumented feature which nobody has taken advantage of yet.

And here's the FCEU version... https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/bisqwit-smb2j-v6-converted.zip Created with nesmock with command: nesmock -o124 -o14660:119 smb2j.fmv smb2j.fcm

Since FCEU has better sound (and, IMHO, looks nicer), why not use it? Is it just because of the slower FDS access?
Because I am not yet familiar with making movies with FCEU. (And that might be because the Linux port of FCEU is underdeveloped.) Admittedly this is a marketing trick as well: A FCEU movie would be more than two seconds slower because of the differences in disk access. And I don't like to make it difficult to compare the timing to the previous version.

Guess what -- you were right! And it was even enough to get across the ~20-frame boundary between levels. So, I'm making a new version now. I'm now 21 frames ahead at the end of 4-1. I'm trying simply edit the old movie, but looks like this is going to change many monsters' movements. Edit: Gained a few more frames in 4-4 because this time the fake Koopa wasn't blocking my way. However, this gain might be killed by the ~20 frame rule. Edit 2: Looks like it was. Thus, I'm still 21 frames ahead at end of 5-1. However, I managed to stomp some of those turtles I couldn't in v5. Edit 3: I have never got 1up from a flagpole before. Cool. Unfortunately it can not be used in the movie, due to the six fireworks that follows. Edit 4: I found a swim of death:

The A/V desync is in the AVI. I noticed it before publishing, but because the encoding took so long and the desync wasn't really long, I wasn't really eager to go back to step 1.

After watching ep1, ... it wasn't as good as I hoped. It spoils the entire game in the 1st episode despite following a different sequence of events. But bonus points for having the same voice actor for Klarth and Arche as in the original game.

I will create the AVI of this movie using FCEU instead of Famtasia, because FCEU has better sound quality than Famtasia. However, because FCEU is a different emulator, the movie had to be changed a little. Particularly, these things were changed: - Added 124 frames of delay before 1-1 because FCEU has a lot slower FDS access and a slightly slower boot-time. - 1-1: Avoided coins that caused lag in FCEU (didn't cause in Famtasia). - 4-1: Took one more coin to avoid fireworks that would otherwise come in 8-3. - Added 119 frames of delay before 5-1 because FCEU has a lot slower FDS access. You can see the FCM format version here: https://files.tasvideos.org/bisqwit/bisqwit-smb2j-v5-converted.zip The actual conversion was done with nesmock, using the following commandline:
./nesmock -o124 -o14600:119 ~/nes/smb2j.fmv ~/nes/smb2j.fcm
The changes to the movie content were done in Famtasia with almost regular means of rerecording: 1. Take backup of original movie 2. Apply the first pending change to your movie by normal rerecording. Pause the emulation when you've done with the change. You don't need to replay the rest of the movie. 3. (Pause on), save snapshot, load snapshot, end movie. 4. Look at the filesize of your now truncated movie 5. Append the missing part from the old movie to the new movie. In any system equipped with standard unix utilities, you can do it with command such as:
dd if=smb2j-backup12.fmv bs=1 skip=12283 >> smb2j.fmv
(Have I sometimes mentioned that I love unix-like systems?) 6. Verify it worked 7. If there are more changes to do, goto 1. Despite these changes, I still consider the AVI to represent the movie I submitted. [EDIT: SMB2j actually writes to its own image, which will cause different loading times depending on previous playing sessions! To ensure this FCM works, you need to delete the .fds file from your fce-ultra's save directory! The movie file format doesn't take this into consideration. A small rather unpleasant surprise for those who make FDS movies with FCEU. ]
