At least in mencoder you can say -fps and it will automatically scale the fps by duplicating / dropping frames as necessary.

It's the PAL version that allows for slightly (a lot actually) faster runs. We're using the NTSC version here because of traditional reasons (Famtasia doesn't support PAL, many people are from USA and Japan, and so on).

If you ask for my preference... Famtasia allows anything between 1..999% speed of original, with any frame skipping I desire... It allows for reconfiguring almost all hotkeys. It has movie support, 60 fps support and 240 scanline support. All very neat. The window can be scaled, and movies can be rerecorded. It allows for 10 snapshot slots. Some people claim to have problems with Famtasia, but for some reason, neither desyncs or crashes happen at me anymore. It seems to depend on computer. Whereas the Linux version of FCEU is very underdeveloped: speed changing buttons don't work in scandinavian keyboards, frame advance button doesn't exist, file paths are handled in most ugly way and keys are not configurable (at least not without knowing how to hex-edit the binary-format configuration file). These limitations may or may not apply to the Windows version. However, for movie watching, FCEU is somewhat ahead of Famtasia, with its better sound emulation, slightly better palette and PAL support.

The last time I asked (20 days ago), the hex editing (to change the order of levels) had apparently been accomplished and he's in the middle of Metal Man level, with Wily levels next. I don't know more than that.

There is no option. Ask Phil for a patched version - I have provided him for the information to make it and he said he can do it. He apparently also used it.

I'm thinking of subtitles along these lines:
0:02:18.00-0:02:21.00 Place the boys to the front so they can escape fast. Also setting message speed to maximum. 0:05:14.00-0:05:16.00 Pauses like this are to control luck. 0:08:17.00-0:08:20.00 Meet Terra. 0:12:09.00-0:12:12.00 Meet Locke. 0:13:21.00-0:13:24.00 Meet Mog and his friends. 0:16:54.00-0:16:57.00 Meet Edgar. 0:17:59.00-0:18:02.00 Buy a Bio blaster. It was used in the beginning of this movie, but is was part of the machine battle suit which Terra didn't keep. 0:19:40.00-0:19:43.00 Meet Kefka. 0:23:27.00-0:23:30.00 Terra would normally use magic in this battle and totally surprise his new friends, but since this is a timeattack, we'll let Edgar handle all the hard work with a weapon of mass destruction. Meanwhile, Locke steals a potion.

I don't think I can do that with the software I'm currently using. (Bisqwit's way of thinking:) I'd have to create a program that filters the AVI and adds those subtitles graphically to it...

I would like to have extra subtitles with this movie. When I was creating the heavily blurred AVI, I was thinking something along the lines of "Locke's introduction", "Edgar's introduction" (scene labels) and some technique explanations ("Vicks and Vedge escape the battle quicker than the girl because they're in the front line. This way, the girl gets all the experience.")

If you fall unconscious in a race 5 seconds before the goal (and it is noticed by the judges and the audience) but your car still crosses the goal line, does it count as a valid result? If the car collapses 10 meters before the goal but a wheel of it crosses the goal line, does it count as a valid result?

As for the pipe issue: The thing is that "1 coin more" doesn't say anything. Nobody cares if you get 40 or 70 coins in the completion of that game. They only care for what looks cool and what's difficult to accomplish. That bumping against a pipe doesn't look cool. The only number the audience will compare is the time, so ignore all the other numeric goals and concentrate on creating a beautiful movie. As for the ending thing: The point is that when you end it early, the actual ending might be a little *slower* because you stop moving faster. When you end the movie early like that, you're encouraging that kind of bastardising of the rules. When it comes to fast completion of the game, I don't think the length of user input is the decisive factor (it should not be!!). It should be the actual completion time (a commonly agreed goal) that matters. In Super Mario Bros's case, it is the moment you hit the hammer. It is the common goal. This is just common sense. You are competing in the time needed to complete the game, not in the time needed to control the game. I'm not a politician. I'm just trying to make it so that people don't shoot each others in leg. I hate having to make rules, actually...
