I have beat this game so many times (15+), but I never thought to do a speed run. This is by far my favorite N64 game

I'm trying to beat his record. Here are some things that I've found out

The current run of Bubble Bobble is well-played... well, it dispatches enemies quickly.. but that's not the point of the game. The game is all about score.
I'm not saying that his movie is bad, but I've beaten most of his times in the first few levels. The seconds point is debatable. Many games that are already up are like that too.

However, if you're just trying to find the quickest path to HAPPY END on non-Super Bubble Bobble, you need to understand item drops.
True. How long do items last? Until you die?

EXTEND happens when you collect all of the letters. The letters appear in levels with Tohru Iwatani gates, one letter per every enemy above two that is popped in one pop. EXTEND lets you skip one level, at the cost of watching a short animation. In many levels, the animation is shorter than the level, and EXTEND takes no longer to get (because the letters stay onscreen longer than most items). The solution: Instead of dispatching all of the enemies with the pop-immediately technique, bubble all of the enemies that can be clumped, destroying them in sync with the final enemy. No time lost, EXTEND gained. I have no idea how to influence which letters appear. The more letters of a single type you collect, the more canes and treasure chests appear (whcih make a huge diamond appear when the level clears - takes no extra time and adds to the score a lot).
I don't think that getting the letters extend is easy. It is probaly not faster to get all of them in one level. I would only get them if they are in your way. Only if you are missing one letter in a room that takes a bit should you go out of your way to get it.

Candy extends the bubble range, increases the rate of fire, or both. The video leeches the most useful candy very quickly because of its extra bubble-blowing. I'm not sure which candy is which, but you get them like this: One candy arises from blowing bubbles. Another candy arided from popping bubbles. The third candy arises from jumping. Do these tasks early and often (35+ times), but remember that only one candy can appear on a level, and the candy disappears when the last enemy pops. Running shoes increases run & jump speed. The current run receives these on level 20. 20!! Get these by walking a lot (384+ tiles). Very quickly.
So should I just randomly blow and pop bubbles like he does in the movie?
Boco wrote:
Finally, an item that doesn't appear at all in the current run: the umbrella. Three varieties exist, and all have the same purpose: skipping levels. Umbrellas appear depending on how many Water bubbles were popped. It doesn't matter if they do anything, just pop them. If you get 15 you skip 3 levels, 20 for 5, and 25 for 7. Each time an umbrella appears, subtract its numerical value from the number of water bubbles popped. The trick is not to waste more time in the water levels than is saved by abusing their water bubbles. I have no idea how to make this look good, though it very clearly saves time if done in the right levels at the right time.
Definatly. The movie is long enough as it is. Don't know why he didn't use any.

With this knowledge and running a 2-player game, the game would be completed much faster.. though I'd like to see a full run of all 226 levels (Bubble Bobble, Happy End path, then Super Bubble Bobble, Happy End path).
Hes already doing a two player one. Should I still do a one player one or not? Edit: Didn't realize he had replied. Oops.

Blip, do you think you would be able to hack Famtasia in such a way that would let allow you to redo early parts of a video without having to redo the whole thing?
Even if you could do that, in ceratin games you might affect the randomness and everything afterwords will not make sense.

Not exactly sure, but I think that since there are only a few people with the parts that you need, and it needs to be divided amongst everyone else, so you only get a little. But you may have a lot that others need so it just uses as much upload bandwith as is needed. Or, I could be completly wrong.

Heh heh. I'm like 100 of those searches for Bisqwit. My browser sucks and keeps on deleting the history so I just go to google and search Bisqwit. Too lazy to put it in my favorites. Good job though. That's a lot of hits. This site is cool. :)

I must be missing something. I've redone level 1 5 times, and I can get at most 1 second faster. Theres no way that I can do 5 seconds faster. Theres probably just some trick that I don't know about. Edit: Unless I come up with something soon, I think I will just stop. I've done track 1 so many times, and the best i could do is 54:03. I don't think that it matters if I race against other people or not. I'll go check though. Edit: No difference. Edit: Ugh. There is nothing wrong with my movie. They must have cheated :p I give up. Its impossible to get under 54 seconds! Grr.

I beat it once. Here are my times: 0:55:10 0:58:65 0:54:38 1:01:60 1:05:92 0:58:62 Total game time: 7:42 I'm going to redo it though. I watched it and some of the jumps are done really bad, especially in level 6. Im sure that I beat TG's record for 3 and 4. Not sure about the others. 1 and 2 seem to messed up on TG, saying something like 5 minutes, and level 5 is five seconds faster than mine, according to them. Anyway, in the last level, I can make the game time maybe half a second faster at the end, but make the total game time longer. Which should I do? Currently, it has a cool ending where i burnout and trip over a barrior at the same time then flip all the way to the finish line. Thus, it takes a bit longer to get to the finish line, but the I can stop the movie sooner and it looks cooler.

How can you check how many frames faster something is? Do you have to have a copy of each run, then stop the movie at the exact same frame?

So does it matter which one we use to record? Are movies made at 60 fps playable in the regular famtasia?

Yeah, but I guess I'll make it anyway, even if you don't accept it, just so that I can say that I have. The only thing that (partially) saves my movie from being completely boring is the fact that I go and make other bikes crash and things like that :p

Unless he was trying to make his movie perfect, like smb, then this doesn't matter. I can understand a days work at most, byt not three days work. Though it would suck if these were the only mistakes that kept him from a perfect run :p

I thought that this game would be boring to watch, but I did the mode where you race against all those other computers. I ended up with a time of about 55 seconds for level 1. At twin galaxies, the record for level 1 with no computers was 5 minutes. However, that may be a typo and they really meant 50 seconds. Any time that you can get in selection a(no computers) can be matched in selection b (computers), so this has me worried. Does anyone know what is up with this? Edit: Made a topic about on TG, see if they know whats going on.

Hmm. I'm not sure how TG does it. However, if they could get two seconds slower, than this might not be as fast as possible. Whatever. I'll just wait and see then.

Edit: Speaking of world records, someone over at the Twin Galaxies forums claimed a time of 6:59 in Solstice. I don't think he sent in proof yet, but said he has it on tape. Someone needs to make a new Solstice video.
