For those that love hunting for arbitrary code execution, I think this game has great potential. One spot that comes to my mind is the game freeze that can occur when you transition screens while talking to an npc like the fisherman. Might be worth looking into to see whats happening in the memory. Link to video (near 1:15 in this video)

I have a similar feeling on this as I did with SML2; this is an amazing achievement, but I prefer the glitchyness of the previous run (like the what looks like random movement). Weak yes vote.

I still have a bit of interest in the run without the doghouse trick. I was working on it intensely a while back, but dropped it due to frustration. I'd happily contribute to this run now that it's been a while. I also agree that no "screen glitching" should be banned since there are such a wide variety of ways to do this (hookshot clipping, jumping places to clip, boot dashing places, etc). The way Tompa put it works as a good rule, in addition to no wrong warping/screen warping. Another improvement I've been wondering about is if it's possible to glitch Taron (or other cutscenes for that matter) using a method similar to 15:11 in the playaround. I tried it early on but had no luck, however, since you apparently don't have to return Bow wow it might be possible. edit: reading back it looks like I never posted an encode for the run I started, so here's that Link to video

I as well would like to know more about what goes on in the RAM, especially during glitching. Link to video Just messing around here it's interesting to see how corrupt the game becomes. I wonder just how much of this could be abused. Ever since I recorded this the other day, I've been thinking of possible improvements to the current run. -Since Abra has a 10% encounter rate outside the daycare, would just catching one there for teleport be the way to go (unless you need a lvl20 one for distortion)? -Would it be faster to skip the Goldeen battle, critical geodudes with scratch/rage, and have slightly lower stats for the later fights than getting that xp? -If you went with skipping the fight, would it be faster to not evolve Totodile (assuming distortion would still work)? Eh, I think there is more I'm forgetting, I'll edit this later.

How would an Escape Rope work? Only in Gen I does it return you to the previous Pokemon Center; in Gen II+ it only returns you to the entrance of the cave it was used in.
Guess escape rope is out of the question then. Not sure how you would get back teleportless besides redoing all the map distortions to get to Victory Road. The only other way would be with fly, but you would need a pokemon that can fly (would probably use some of the "weird" pokemon created with having more than six pokemon), the HM and a badge which is just a time loss in this run. I've tried distorting over the water East of New Bark Town but never made it anywhere (would also be a walk, possibly a few mandatory battles, I forget) so Abra seems the best way to go.

Might it be quicker to distort the map in Route 2 instead of using Cut and walk through the forest?
It would be faster, however I played around with map distortion there using the pokemon I had and could never get a good distortion that let me bypass the wall (tried switching pokemon, distortion at different spots).

Interesting run. But I have a big question: Is it possible to use Pidgey instead of Abra? Considering Pidgey has a much shorter cry... Other than that, I have a couple comments: - 8:09: It is faster to have Rattata's Tail Whip hit instead of miss. - 15:46: It is faster to walk in front of the Hiker only after going as far right as possible on the row above. (In this case, the Hiker only walks one step.)
Yeah, Pidgey's cry would save a lot of time while moving pokemon through boxes. The one thing that would need to be tested is if the map distortion works properly (couldn't say I'm sure) and whether not having teleport would loose time since you would have to use an escape rope I believe. Both of the other comments sound like they could save a little time.

My bad, it wasn't a sidequest. I'll elaborate. Our route sails to Keelhaul Key and gets Bobbery as a partner and then leaves through the blue pipe, which we opened up with the Fish Glitch right before leaving Rogueport. But before leaving Keelhaul Key through the blue pipe, you can take a small detour (which takes about half a minute) to go to the main area of the Key to talk to Flavio about helping open the way to the Pirate's Grotto. At the end of this series of speech bubbles, Flavio joins your party "for a short time!". However, the game programmers never expected you to leave the island with Flavio in your party, so you can freely take him with you through the pipe and throughout the rest of the game. Among the "hilarious results" are Flavio being randomly pasted on the screen in certain cutscenes, following Peach and Bowser, and falling through the credits at the end.
That easily made my day. I'd love to see him in a future 100% run.

I'm really looking forward to this run Fractal, sounds most interesting. I've been continuing with my gold run that basically matches the real time runs. After finishing the Elite 4 my time is just under 47 minutes. Here's one thing I tried that turned out loosing time. Thought it was interesting: Link to video Also, should I submit this run with the arbitrary code run being worked on?

How much A pressing does the MIPS skip require? It'd be nice to see him in a non-obsolete TAS.
Luckily that takes 0 presses so I would guess a minimal "A button" run would be a 16-star run. A lot of the early stars can also be obtained with 0 presses which is nice (lots of BoB, lots of WF, lots of CCM, etc..)

Yup, no buttons besides a or b work (to advance through text). That is kind of why Link gets stuck being propelled forward in tricks like this.

Interesting route, but I'll have to throw another no vote in there. Didn't see many effective damage/sheild boosts (a few which was nice), corner boosts, screen transition boosts, and some of the overall movement was sloppy. I love seeing runs of this game so don't give up. Maybe have a look at the tricks page or the details in prior submissions to get a feel for how to do some of these tricks.

Not sure why one version is used over another, just rolling with it at this point. In lsnes the clock doesn't seem to glitch out like in vba (which is good) so this emulator is the way to go. I'll do a real time run to verify this soon. Edit: forget all that about addresses.

Bizhawk and I aren't getting along great but from my trial run I'm about 8 minutes ahead of Werster's 1:12.24 run right when exiting the forest (and I have ideas to save a little extra time from this point on). I'm not planning on submitting whatever run I complete but will post what I get if bizhawk stops giving me problems.

Not sure what this means or how to report an error, but when I tried to load a savestate while recording pokemon gold, the program crashes and throws this error: http://puu.sh/5NdJA.png It did not use to do this and I could TAS normally. Edit: looking through the backup files, I noticed that a movie 30:12.38 is 63mb big. A later version that was at most a few minutes longer had a size of 126mb. These sizes seem a bit crazy for an input file.

For the fun on it I'm starting a gold run that uses the bad clone map distortion route. Will be a good reference as to what route is faster (I'm guessing the route in this movie)
