He has one button being hit on the even frames, and the other on the odd. Example: A is pressed: 35,37,39,41,43,45,47 B is pressed: 36,38,40,42,44,46,48 This means that there is a button being pressed on every frame. Obviously this will only work if more than one button with trigger the desired event.

About excess a+b presses. To select level I just hold A and B turbo down with offset of 1 frame. This way the level will be selected as fast as possible and it won't require and slow motion + rerecords.
Not true. It's then set up to be hitting the buttons every two frames. So 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15... are the button hits. If the game lets you enter the level on frame 12 you have lost a frame. Edit: Nevermind VIPer7 explained your logic to me.

snes9x doesn't work with it. Wait for zsnes with rerecord support.

Before anyone else tells me that the link is dead, I am well aware. Although I didn't lose anything important in their sudden closure of the free accounts; I do find it amazing that they just shut the accounts down without ANY warning at all and then told people to pay for their service. I could see that pissing alot of people off as they might have lost alot of files. Anyways, for if anyone wants to watch what i've finished just contact me in the IRC channel and i'll send you in some way. I'll update the post with a new link as soon as I get another stable webhost which I want to post on a public forum. Also in reponse to jxq2000: I am aware of the yellow shield wasting time, but it only really registered that what I had done when I was half through the level. This only really wastes like 3 frames, and I don't AT ALL want to have to redo all of that just to save 3 frames. If someone wants to put the amount of effect required to make this video to beat me in time, then hats off to them. I'm also planning to getting alot of cash money prizes in this game, even though it takes a while to count up at the end of each level. It's a game show, what kind of super human contestent wouldn't try to get a ton of money while playing it! Also it can be pretty humorous just how many copies of the home game you can win. In truth i'm not too worried about speed, as I have no chance in hell of getting it even close to as fast as phsyically possible. In the later levels it will probably take ALOT of manipulation just to keep from dieing. It's a type of game which doesn't lend itself to speedrunning; however I beleive it will be more than entertaining enough to watch. There are other movies on this site which are entertaining for reasons other than speed, such as River City Ransom. *Note: This does not mean I won't be doing the game quickly, it will be done as quickly as I possibly can, but I won't be trying to get as many frames out of each room that I can. Barring any MAJOR mistakes I only plan to do each room once.

Now adays only the best movies get a single unexplained no vote, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. Nice work.

Too bad that wouldn't work. That live CD uses mplayer 1.0pre6, and one of the Castlevania COTN runs crashes in 1.0pre6. Har, you lose at the game of geek!

In Snes9x, you don't need to hold any buttons. You can just toggle them and have them automatically pressed. This will work as long as you're playing all frame advance. It's not as impressive as playing with your feet of course, but probably less frustrating in the long run.
Back when I first started the run this wasn't and option. As for playing with it right now, while I cannot say i've actually tried, I think it would be more work. As I would have to be toggling multiple keys on and off every frame, and I just know I would be constantly missing keys or something. I'll try it though.

Well, it's been suggested a handful of times, and I choose to give it a shot a few months back. About two seconds into the actual gameplay I decided that having to hold 8 buttons at once, and then attempting to press frame advance was just too hard for me to do by myself. It also took FOREVER to accomplish anything. So, I dropped the project months ago. Recently as the award nominations started I made a joke about how Smash TV would win most unbeleivable in 10 years time, after I got around to finishing it. Someone came up with the idea that I use dance pads to help reduce the amount of buttons I have to press with my hand. While I do have them, I didn't think this would work very well, but it gave me the idea to use an arcade controller which I have. So two days later, i've spent a few hours messing around with it, and I have completed the first room. Playing with my feet. The way i'm making the run is as follows: -Hard difficulty -Using a code to speed up the gameplay (Make it harder on myself, and more insane to watch) -Does not miss a shot -One person playing both characters -Does not die As I've said the first room is complete, and up to download. Unfortunately, it being the first room there isn't many enemies, so it's not much to watch yet. However if you have played the game for any length of time you know that in the later levels the whole screen can fill up with enemies, and not being totally overrun can be difficult.

I watched it when you first submitted it, and sat on it until now trying to form an opinion. I still don't have one, and I honestly don't know what the think about the run. It was... uhh...hmmm.... interesting...?

Is this award suppose to be best signal/noise ratio, or just player who has the most high quality runs?

Heh, well, nonetheless i meant the same. If it's not us making it, it's the people watching it. And people watching is what making runs is all about.
While I agree with you on this point, there are people who don't. There are people who speedrun only for bragging rights, and not for entertainment purposes.

Watching a run with incredible speed and moves as a speedrun would be much more entertaining than a TA video though, so that counts.
Doh I ment to write "making" there, not watching. That's what I get for not reading it over.

I think the whole idea of "so what" is probably the best one to take. No matter who you are, or what you do, if you play it on an emulator which supports rerecords, there are people who are going to claim it is "fake". If the possibility that there are rerecords there are people who will assume that you used them. Add to this the fact that it is EXTREMELY easy to hex edit your movie file and change how many rerecords you used on a movie. Doing this also raises the question of "How often do you need to rerecord before it is actually considered 'tool-assisted'?". Is loading saving after each level to save time not 'cheating'? What about every stage? Room? Trick? Jump? This question however works in both directions. If you save-state only at save points does it make it the same as a segmented run? What if in a game where you can save and restart anywhere? Could you just save-state and say "Well I could save and retry this part anyways"? As for the proof that you are highly skilled, and could pull it off. Personally I have watched all of mike's runs at SDA, and have really enjoyed them. They display an amazing amount of talent, as he manages pull of things which I would think to only see in a TAS, such as the way he manages to manipulate some of the bosses. However, the very idea that your using an emulator seems to undermine the skill that you have. While most people jump to the conclusion that everyone that who makes TAS are terrible at video games and just make them to make themselves feel good; this not really the case. There are actually quite a number of people who make videos for the site who are very skilled at video games. Some hold "legit" records for games, others compete at the world level in tournaments. I suppose a good example of this would be omega's no re-record/slowdown Rockman run, which you can find in the description text of the tool-assisted Rockman run. He has other 'legit' runs elsewhere on the internet which proves he has skill in games (One of which is a Rockman 2 run I beleive?), and if you were in IRC and the forums he provided updated runs as he finished them, as he built up to that time. However, it's done with an emulator which supports slowdowns and savestates, so how many people will beleive that he didn't cheat to get that time? Especially when he managed to use some of those glitches in the TAS run. Honestly, probably not that many. At the end of the day it's up to you. Your the ones watching the run, and it's up to you. People will still watch the run, and if the reason your making the videos is to entertain people then why not?

I watched this back when you posted it on the GBx forum, and have just taken my time responding to it. I do beleive this is worthy of being publishing as you seem to have a good command of the game. The run appears very well done. The thing that bothered me about the run was something you cannot help. This is the utter retardation of the guards posted around the compound. Who hired those guard!? For some reason it frusterated me to watch you run RIGHT infront of or beside the guards without them reacting to you at all. Even though I can hardly penalize the run for that.

Ok, for a while people have been asking me on IRC to give an update on what is happening with the run. So here are some of the test videos I have recorded. This is only a small sample of what i've been testing, but I think it's enough to satisfy the people who wanted to know what was happening. This does not include anything to do with the new glitch i've found, as I haven't found a place where it would actually do anything to help yet. Although I am closer to getting it to do something for me than I was before. To the clips provided. None of these are final version, none of them are perfect. All of them can be improved. Beyond that, they might not even appear in the final version of the run. I did try to give everyone clips which were not completely useless. The missile test clip is of the fastest collection of a missile tank which gives me 20 missiles before Kraid. It's quite a bit faster than all the other missiles (~300 frames), and also looks the most impressive. So I guess that is good. However i've almost made up my mind that I will not be getting 20 missiles before Kraid, so I cannot see this making the final cut. The zipline test clip actually gives me the greatest confidence that Kraid would actually be faster to do first than Ridley. This room is the biggest time waste in doing Kraid first, but I managed to get through it pretty quickly. This clip can probably be improved quite a lot, as while through the whole room there could be minor improvements. I think I might be able to make the last bombjump without needing the walljump. Which would save a bunch of time. The last clip i've including is probably the one that most people would consider the impressive; even though it shouldn't come as much of a surprise. There really there is nothing to say about it...

What game are you trying? Is the desync always happening in the same spot, or does it change? What is happening before it desyncs? Does the character just not react like he did before (jumps earlier or later for example), or is there an enemy or platform in a different location?

You might want to only have rewards for things that can actually be voted on. Rather than things like "Shortest movie".

Yeah, that was a super missle I was testing. I have to test how much time is lost but shinesparking to the left there, rather than upward and just continueing to Mother Brain. Then if saves enough time to be worth it. I could also attempt to get that one instead of backtracking for the one near Ridley. I have a feeling that i'll be losing alot of time by getting that one though.
