Your credibility went just down the toilet with that comment.
Your ad hominem is a valid argument.
ad ho·mi·nem [ad hom-uh-nuhm ‐nem, ahd-] adjective 1. appealing to one's prejudices, emotions, or special interests rather than to one's intellect or reason. 2. attacking an opponent's character rather than answering his argument. He tried to discredit the point Alex Jones made by saying that Alex Jones is not credible. It's a logical fallacy, and although we are all guilty of using it from time to time, I won't just let responses like that go without an answer.

I was watching the Arkanoid TAS and reminiscing about other Breakout clones earlier today, and now this. Now I have an excuse to stop doing work and play one of them. R.I.P.

Does this website (http://occupywallst.org/) really represent OWS activists? The front page announces its "solidarity" with MoveOn.org, an Obama campaign front group. Obama's 2008 campaign was financed by Wall Street (Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Citigroup). His 2012 campaign is even more reliant on Wall Street. AFL-CIO and SEIU have also aggressively lobbied for the (Wall Street-financed) Obama campaign, and yet this website also announces its support for them. Why is a website that claims to represent anti-Wall Street demonstrators siding with groups that have aggressively supported the Wall Street-backed Obama administration? I am really keen to find out if genuine OWS activists are also Obama supporters, and whether or not they are pleased about this website making alliances with Obama front groups. And no, I am not a Republican. Wall Street has thrown its weight behind Mitt Romney too. I am genuinely interested in how people feel about this.
Sounds like a pretty reasonable charge to me.

I can absolutely sympathize with the protesters frustration, but I've heard some really scary stuff coming out from some of them. Perhaps this is just media spin, but I will not support a group that by and large want to get Obama re-elected, pass his jobs bill, or propel the "Buffett Rule." The current administration is the epitome of Wall Street, and anyone there who supports it is clearly misguided. Capitalism is not the problem; corporatism is. If the group wants to discuss the real issue, they should talk about the Federal Reserve, but the only video I've seen talk about it ends with a couple naysayers. This could easily be attributed to ignorance, but my man Alex Jones claims its been co-opted, which wouldn't surprise me. In any case, Michael Moore's comments at the protest disgust me.

I haven't watched this yet, but I'd just like to give props for a relatively new user making such a huge improvement in so little time. This is bound to be incredible.

As IronSlayer is clearly the authority on all things metallic, I will use his categories to list my bands: Old-school: Motorhead. Thrash: For Teutonic, Sodom, otherwise, probably either Testament or Anthrax. I love Pantera, but I wouldn't put them in the same category as they usually play at much slower tempos. Death: Well, Death. Morbid Angel for something more modern, and Atheist if you want a cool jazz hybrid. Black: Immortal if you're serious, Venom if you're not. Progressive: Dream Theater. King Crimson and Porcupine Tree if you consider their metal elements enough to push them into that genre, which I doubt you would.

Sorry for the quintuple bump, but I got the idea of possibly rerunning this with the 60 frame improvement while trying to find further improvements. In order to avoid wasting my time if nothing additional is found, I'm thinking I could TAS Pinball simultaneously as an Easter Egg. As both games have very simple controls that don't really clash, and that I doubt we will ever have a max score Pinball run on the grounds that it'd probably be incredibly repetitive, I think this could be a cool idea. Any thoughts?

I love how you made a petition to a President whose re-election would be impossible if such a system was setup. He would never adopt this, and that's without my usual conspiracy that he's actively working against the people in essentially every category. But screw it, signed.

Thats fine. I totally understand that real-life takes precedent over hobbies. As I said, I'm fine with this thread, but please keep need for work separate from your contributions to the site.
Understood. I admit that I mentioned my contributions partially to guilt people into thinking my post here was justified, but I was never trying to imply that anyone owed me anything. Sorry about all of that. Thanks for allowing me to keep this thread open.

That would be very nice, thank you. Where do you look for work, if you don't mind me asking? Maybe I've just been using the wrong sites, as Elance, the site I'm trying to use now, has very non-responsive buyers, and RentACoder, now VWorker, takes 15% of your profits, and like I said, has a lot of people trying to scam you. I could tell a lot of funny / tragic stories from that site, but maybe then I'd be crossing the line into personal drama. There was third site I had tried that I liked a lot, but it was really small and I don't think it'd still be around, not to mention I forgot its name.
That's the thing, actually. I would never use websites like RentACoder specifically because they have a reputation for being awful. I strongly suggest getting your own clients from your area. Try visiting graphic design studios, showing your work and telling them you're a forward-thinking, down-to-earth programmer who's new to the freelance world and would like to help them make great websites. Most of my clients are actually graphic designers, and most of them are return clients with whom I've done a lot of projects. It's easier that way, and you'll be less likely to get scammed or otherwise cheated out of your fair reward.
I'm not sure how many I would find in a college town, unless there are somehow start-ups that would have the funding to pay me. I'm also not a web designer; I'm all about back-end engines and stuff. Still, it'd be ideal to get returning clients on the internet, which is why I thought it'd be awesome to work with people here if they could use the help.

If he's planning on quitting his work on the site, which isn't unrealistic given his situation, then instead of complaining about how all he thinks about is himself, we should thank him for his work.
Maybe I started this thread in an overly dramatic way, and I'm sorry for doing this, but I'm at least reducing my contributions, at most taking a break from everything. I have no intention of retiring.

After clicking where to save the file, it should prompt you with a list of codecs to use. Pick Camstudio. Other than that, you're good. Again, you really should focus on optimizing your run first, unless you've managed to already obsolete the current MMX run, which would be amazing. Also, please avoid double posting.

My Adsense campaigns have been quite unsuccessful in the past. I'm not sure how people make anything close to a substantial profit off of websites...is the web nothing more than a Ponzi scheme?

Yeah, you won't make a dollar per encode. No encoder makes money off their encodes, nor does a TASer make money off his TASes. If you don't want to volunteer anymore, don't. Asking for money after a gift has been given is truly a form of asshattery.
I agree. The distinction is that I'm not asking money for my encodes; I'm saying that I'd appreciate the opportunity to do paid work, and the amount of money I want to raise is fairly insignificant. If you interpreted this literally, I apologize. The only connection I'm trying to make between my previous contributions and my current wish for work is that I clearly have a strong work ethic, and I believe that my request is warranted as I am an established contributor and not just some random person posting services, which would clearly be spam. The fact is, I have spent far too much time volunteering when I should have been balancing my act between volunteering and seeking paid work. This is no one's fault but my own. I don't think this kind of thread is appropriate.
Why? This is Off Topic. I am in a time of need that people here might be willing or eager to assist with in exchange for a service they are likely to need being in such a community. I'm not derailing any other discussions, trying to make this into a drama fest, or even attempting to make a massive gain from this thread (If I made a dollar for every encode I've done here, I'd have more than double the amount I am trying to raise in the immediate future). Considering the range of discussions that go on in this section, I believe this is warranted if it doesn't degenerate into a flame war.

Hi, After being scolded for mentioning this repeatedly in IRC, I have decided to post this in OT. Over the past 7 months, I've been encoding (~450 encodes) and publishing (~40 publications) on this site non-stop. I am proud of my contributions, but in hindsight, it is very clear that I have used my time here as a way to justify me not having a paying job, both in real life and online with my programming abilities. I've had very bad experiences in the freelance market when I was younger, and after being discouraged from continuing my involvement in it, I've worked in several open source projects / non-profit websites, the last of which has been here. Now, I have come to a point where I need to raise a small amount of funds sometime before December. My parents are more than likely not going to fund this, and even if they did, I'd feel guilty to continue to mooch off of them. I could get a part-time job on campus, but I am doing policy debate for credit, and for those who know anything about that, it's a pretty huge commitment that takes out most of my weekends. So, I am hoping to re-enter the online freelancing market. Finding work is hard, however, and I'm very reluctant to work for the same kind of manipulative bastards that I have encountered during my time at RentACoder a few years ago. So, I'm hoping I could find someone on here that could hire me, or someone who already is working for a client who needs more coders. As this is a forum containing many programmers, I thought I might find someone. It'd be great to work for / with people online that I actually "know" and mostly like instead of some random jerk trying to get a free lunch. I am primarily a website programmer, experienced in (X)HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, Python, MySQL, XML, JSON, etc., though I could probably work on desktop applications written in Python or any relatively simple one written in another language with similar syntax like Java. I started programming 7 years ago at the age of 12, and I know my stuff. Here's hoping that someone has a use for my abilities. I'd like to resume encoding at a casual pace soon, but it's hard to justify any further contributions past TASing or the occasional publication when I have no source of income.

Ok so I should make the movie as a .smf file that Brandon mentioned first. Then replay it and record it using one of the programs listed. I grabbed Camstudio. I tried to grab x264 but I think i need something else for it to work.
.smf? Do you mean .smv? Also, make sure you're grabbing the CamStudio codec, not the recording utility. Don't worry about x264 for now...seriously, most people who TAS don't encode their own work, and if you manage to break a record on this site or establish a new one of a worthwhile game, you will have no trouble finding someone willing to encode it for you.

Hi, I'm very new to making any sort of video. I'm doing a playthrough of Mega Man X. I did a recording with no editing to see how it works. It seems that after 4 mins it makes a new video file. The 4 minute file was almost 2 gigs in size. I'm using Snes9x right now. Could anyone please tell me how i could splice the videos together?
It was that big because you probably recorded it as uncompressed AVI. I use ffdshow (configured to h.264 lossless) for my videos. To improve quality for Youtube uploads, I halve the FPS (to 30) and then upscale the video using avisynth's pointresize.
Ok, i need baby steps here. I'm glad I'm getting good advice, but I don't have any idea what half your statement meant.
Let me try to put this in the simplest way possible:
  1. When you record a new "movie", you are creating a file containing all of the key presses executed in order. This can be played back on an emulator at any time.
  2. While playing back "movie", you can dump a "video" in AVI format through the emulator you are using. Usually, both recording options are in the File tab. If, when dumping, you select a loseless codec like Camstudio or Lagarith (Both of which would need to be installed), the dumped files will be significantly smaller without losing any quality, increasing the chances that your movie will fit on one file.
  3. After you dump the AVI, you can either upload all of the resulting parts as is, or you can encode it. See the Encoding Guide for more details on that. Encoding will always produce a single video file (If you want it to), and can make it so your YouTube video is in HD.
Right now, just focus on recording the "movie". If you come up with something good, you'll probably find an encoder like myself who can help you get it on YouTube.
All the best, Brandon Evans
