B-b-but, I gave 3 other suggestions. Why not just try them? You clearly know how to TAS well (This was a very solid attempt for a new member), and it'd be a shame for your efforts to go to waste.

All of the encodes can be found in the submission text. Will publish if / when accepted.

Can I say I'm interested and leave it at that? I have no idea if I'll have time to commit when school begins.

You told him that he was going to cancel his own run? Anyway, I still think a Lost Levels Luigi run would be incredible, and I hope you'll consider trying it TMWF.

In your defense, this site should have methods to prevent you from submitting multiple runs at once in the first place. Just try to be more careful next time. What are your thoughts on my suggestions for future runs?
I already did a future run, I did a Mario version, I will post a submission of that soon.
I really don't think that would make for a good run. That'd essentially be a carbon copy of regular SMB1 with a different final level. I'd almost definitely have to vote No on that one. I'd be very interested in a Lost Levels Luigi run, though. Please make that! :)
My Mario movie seemed more entertaining to me than this submission, but I'm not in to making a warpless run.
That's a shame then. I really don't think a warped run of this game will be published, especially not a Mario version. Sorry, but that's just my two cents.

It's not a hack. Well, not technically, at least. If anything it's an official hack. It was a promotional item given away by by the Japanese radio show All Night Nippon back in 1986 and was for the Famicom Disk System. It's supposedly rare (according to Wikipedia), and was indeed a mix of Super Mario Bros. and SMB2J. And I think some of the block placement is from VS Super Mario Bros., but I could be wrong.
Thanks for informing me about this, but my Meh vote still stands. This definitely helps further legitimize a warpless Luigi run, though.

Again? Dang, you guys have really broken this game. I'd offer to do the encode, but my downloadable encodes always mess up the subtitle positions, and I can't guarantee for sure I'm going to have time to do this anytime soon. If this changes, I'll let you know. I'll certainly publish it when the time comes.

Congratulations on your first submission! I didn't know about this hack beforehand, but it seems like this is SMB using the SMB2 engine plus some graphical hacks. I agree completely that a Mario run would be pointless, but the Luigi run posed an interesting scenario: how fast could you beat Super Mario Bros. 1 using Luigi? We've had a Luigi run for SMB2J before answering the same question for Super Mario Bros 2., and I enjoy the concept. The problem in this case, though, is that in the case of Phil's Luigi run, there were many interesting solutions to work around Luigi's drawbacks, exploiting his improved jumping abilities to minimize his flaws. This really can't be seen in this run, probably because the game was not built for Luigi. That, coupled with the fact that this is a hack, and that this novelty was kind of destroyed by the fact that the final level was from SMB2J for some reason, and I have to vote Meh. You did very well with the material you were given, but it doesn't particularly make for a good run. Here are some ideas that you might want to try:
  • A warpless run of this hack (Perhaps some of the aforementioned interesting solutions will show up in some of the other levels).
  • Improve Phil's SMB2J Luigi run.
  • Make a Luigi counterpart to this run. I tried to do so myself, but I can't even flagpole glitch. :(
I hope to see more from you in the future. By the way, why not use your encoding skills to provide a stream for this run? More people will vote if you have a stream up.

Imagine if we could make TASing tools that work with the actual consoles...incompatibility would no longer be a factor, nor would we necessarily be labeled as a site related to emulation / ROMs, which I suppose are somewhat controversial.

Isn't that a big deal? Wouldn't not getting to the credits qualify as not completing the game? Edit: Nevermind, you're clearly providing this movie file so that it can replace the old one...you'll have to re-encode it though, of course.

30hz flicker is not the only reason that TASBlend would be useful. When you encode in 30fps normally, frames have to be cut out, regardless of whether not they are important. If a frame and its successor were identical, then the blending would result in the original frame, and no blurring would happen. Always using TASBlend ensures that no frames are lost, and I think choppiness is worse than blurriness.

Honestly, I think all runs should be encoded with TASBlend until YouTube supports true 60fps encodes. It would give the most accurate depiction of what the user would see if he / she ran the run on an emulator.

I'm not so sure I agree that the map glitch is game breaking. I'd call game breaking a glitch that severely distorts the game's engine. The tile glitching technique completely changes the properties of the enemies and the terrain, while this glitch nearly places your character in a different position. My idea would not bypass instrument collection. It's kind of similar to Tanooki's idea, but the only restriction is not tile glitching (You could collect the sword if it would help).

Not really. I save my HD for YouTube, and with downloadable encodes, I just aim for a reasonable file size. Anyway, the stream is up, so I hope you'll enjoy.

Yay! Also, why not submit? Lastly, DarkKobold needs to try to verify this, as it's FM2 and might stand a better chance.

I'm not sure if either would be worthy of publication, but considering how much depth there is to this game's glitches, I figure there are many different branches that can be created. For example, what about a run that gets to the final boss via "Fish World," the area you get by teleporting the fisherman into a tree and going fishing? Also, how about a run where you can use the screen jump glitch, but not glitch the tiles? That might be interesting as you'd have to deal with all of the individual dungeons, but you could still bypass many areas. Let me know what you all think. This is probably my favorite game of all time, and I'd give TASing it a shot if there was a realistic goal to aim for.

OK, I know very little about these hacks, but how does one obsolete the other exactly? I'm genuinely curious.
