Hm...Where does it desync? Does the enemies appear in a different location? Or did the game accepted input too late/early?
I'm not sure, as I've done multiple attempts with different results. All that is consistent is that it doesn't get very far. There's no way for sure to tell why this is.

OK, so, we have two boss battles to fix up before we can document and submit this. While we do this, we have one more concern that might be above our heads: I was trying to edit in some more points to this run as I know that there are some tokens we've skipped and some enemies we could have defeated without losing time. I did this and succeeded. However, when I got to Cyclops' stage, it desyncs. I figured "Oh, I have to add a frame to fix this, so this improvement must be ignored." Quite to the contrary, this actually saved a frame. I'm trying to figure out why. I think there's some variable in the background that decides when the "Good job, Hero!" screen shows up, and that perhaps it is dependent on score. Could someone help me figure out what caused this improvement so I could find others? http://www.mediafire.com/?5a85gy8pwt3q9a8 Update: I have saved 4 seconds from the Black Queen fight. I am convinced it is perfect, which is very surprising as I never thought I'd find a strategy that allowed me to hit both of her arms constantly, always keeping her stunned. My TAS repository is now public, so feel free to check out the current version. I'm sure we'll have more improvements before submitting, but jaysmad seems to be busy right now, so I'll have to realistically shoot for a submission at the end of July.

Sorry, it doesn't seem to sync. Voting no because this run won't run on the console Abstaining as I know nothing of this game. I do love to see FCEU runs get obsoleted though, so I hope this gets accepted.

When my NESBot is operational again, I'll be able to see if this syncs, unlike the current run.

this game offers no technical entertainment value - it should be a speedrun game only. I guess this is what I get for not checking the site in awhile! Nicely done, but again, this should not be TAS, but a speedrun
If you read the captions, you'll see that this is all based on luck manipulation, which can't be done in real time.

Abstaining a vote as there's no way I will be able to watch enough of this to have a valid opinion, but I just wanted to say that I think it's funny that "longest TAS" is a sought after record. I mean, I could finish SMB in 9 hours if you'd all like to watch that...
I think the key part of "longest TAS" is that it's still more or less optimized. Runs of JRPGs have always been slower to develop and less likely to be improved because the sheer time commitment they involve, not only in length but also complexity. For example, in this run, DarkKobold has to ask himself, should I draw this GF in disc 1? And then he has to calculate out the time it will save for the next 8 hours of gameplay. Fortunately FF8 is probably one of the easier (relatively speaking) JRPGs because level-ups are really a bad thing and because the path to a quick run is pretty obviously going to involve GFs and card modding, as well as the lack of equippable items besides weaponry (mostly useless in this game for speedrunning), which means he doesn't have to spend as much time agonizing over minutiae. Compare that to, say, FF7, where the question of "how many bombs should I farm for throwable damage items" can't be adequately answered for another 5 hours. The truth, though, is that any one of the games in this series is massively complex; look at how much even the first FF has been improved in subsequent submissions, and that game has a fraction of the complexity the newer entries in the series bears. For that reason, every minute of these eight hours is a fascinating sight to behold, and marks a sign of true skill on the part of the TASer if he has properly considered all his options.
Oh, by no means am I discrediting his work. I'd be willing to bet that DarkKobold produced an incredibly high quality TAS, and I support the precedent Nach made on my recently published run [/shamelessplug] in which he explained that some TASes simply need to be watched in multiple sittings, and that length shouldn't be a disqualifying factor if the run is up to par in the other categories. I just think the title of "longest TAS" is funny.

Thank you all! Now that it's accepted, I can say this freely; Arcade's Revenge is going to be 1000 times more entertaining than this. Keep your eyes open for it! We should have it submitted in 2 weeks or so.

I would like to see a run of the Gameboy version, whatever happens with this one. It's leagues better than the NES version, has a little more musical variety, and doesn't have as many annoying quirks like taking a step after you drop down. Not to mention playing much faster (which would make for a better TAS).
But all of the keys are in doors, which is redundant and takes forever.
That's Crazy Castle 2 you're thinking of. What I was talking about was this game. It has none of the door nonsense.
I knew 2, 3, and 4 had doors, so I assumed this one did as well. Either way, I was possibly going to do a Quad Run of the Crazy Castle GB games. Sorry that you didn't like the NES version.

Regardless of the AVGN's opinions, I liked this game a lot as a kid, and I bet a lot of other people here did too, so I thought a proper run should be made for it.
AVGN'S opinons Of course it's biased. It's simply supposed to be funny. By the way, there's violence and a coarse language. Plus, it's the follow-up to this episode.
Yeah, I don't have a problem with him; I just think it's silly that some people will immediately discredit the game without playing it because he reviewed it. He reviews a lot of good, yet frustrating games. People should take his words with a grain of salt.

If / when it goes over 1MB is when I'll be concerned. 160KB isn't good, but it's also manageable.

OK, I think I'm set for now, though I'll admit I edited a little bit before you notified me that I was using the wrong version. I'll clean it up before submission, but for now, 160KB isn't unmanageable. Thanks!
