I like TASes of this kind of puzzle games. Pretty clever ideas here, easy Yes vote.

I was expecting Brazil to win today, but anyway, I'm sort of glad the only 'big' team that won a game so far was France, and on a tight game. A lot of zebras have happened, and they are always fun to watch.

Come on, Spikestuff, you are better than this. You were the one who kinda aggressively brought up that HappyLee forgot to mention MrWint's input end was 1 frame off. As if it was a huge deal that he didn't mention it, while it's literally the least relevant part of this discussion, and it wasn't even HappyLee's obligation to check that. As a Publisher, yes, you could (but you also didn't HAVE to) have checked what was the exact improvement, or if something had changed in the input end. It's not required to be an expert SMB TASer to do that.
Spikestuff wrote:

I'd rather not, TAS a game that's already been optimized, and continues to be optimized, cause I'm not a bloody Newbie to TASVideos, like all those newcomers who's first thing they do is TAS Super Mario Bros. (Zelda or Metroid).
It's like you can't contain yourself and you have to implicitly attack HappyLee in every way you can, this time being pejorative about his choice of only TASing one game. This whole part of your post was absolutely unnecessary, I don't know why you made it about how you are an 'expanded' TASer that doesn't stick with a single game. I could as well say ''I TAS a game that is actually disputed and hard to optimize, instead of TASing a bunch of random garbage games with shit optimization because I know nobody will ever try to beat me on them.''. The truth is however that there is no 'better' option of which pool of games you TAS, and I'm disappointed you brought this up in your argument.

This is the best road I could find: When the segment in the middle is (5/3)sqrt(3) miles long, the road's length is 10 + 10sqrt(3), so it costs you about $27.32 million. This reminded me of an problem (for which I don't have an answer) I thought a few months ago that's also about optimizing a road: Consider a circular town of radius 1 mile. You want to build a 1 mile length road inside this town. What is the smallest d for which you can build a road so that every point inside the town is at most d miles away from the street? And perhaps an easier question: as the radius of the town goes to infinity, what will be the shape of the road that minimizes d?

I'd like to say that requiring everyone who criticizes a work to make something better themselves is not being receptive to criticism. You don't have to be the cook to criticize the food. I would like to believe that the point of the workbench is provide constructive criticism to submissions, though replies like these unfortunately show that some users do not wish this to be the case.
Hold on there! I'm not trying to suppress helpful suggestions. Just remember that there's a line between a helpful suggestion and petty nitpicking. There's no question that this run is publishable because it's an improvement to an existing run. The entertainment factor is only going to determine tier. The current run is Moons, so this run would have to be noticeably less entertaining to not be Moons. The tier is usually determined by the game itself and not the TASer's artistic decisions, so I would expect the tone of the conversation about those decisions to be commensurate to their importance -- basically, a trivial aside. How are there pages of debate about the merits of an auto-publishable run? This should be uncontroversial, but I see people complaining about trivial stuff -- and yes, I'm using the word complaining, as opposed to "helpfully suggesting". By all means, make a helpful suggestion! Some people seem to have a compulsive need to find fault, while others seem to be making this personal. That ruins the fun for everyone -- especially the people who worked hard to make the run. I'm really just asking people to be civil and objective. And yes, if you absolutely can't live with a TASer's artistic decisions, make something better!
I also have the feeling some people here dislike the run for personal, unrelated reasons and are trying to rationalizate that by searching for minor things they didnt like in the run. And thats not "censoring constructive criticism", Memory. It's not that hard to understand. If I had put effort for many months in a very optimal run to have a lot of people complaining that I 'killed too many enemies" or "spit fireballs with the music too much", I'd also be upset.

I'm not sure if I reasoned through this correctly, as it ended up being quite simple. I'm assuming the king said VIII is not empty, as I wouldn't be able to make progress otherwise: The Lady cant be in rooms 8 or 9. So 8 has an tiger. In order to 8 to be false, 9 must have a tiger. And in order to 9 to be false, 6 must be right. So we find 3 is wrong, thus (assuming "either" is not exclusive) 5 is wrong and 7 is right. It follows 2 and 4 are wrong, and 1 is right. The lady can't be in doors 3, 5 and 9, because their signs are wrong, and she cant be in door 1 due to sign 7. So she must be on door 7. If "either" is actually exclusive, this doesn't work.

Keep in mind that every year, new people enter TASing, with their own ideas on entertainment. It is very much possible for these people to not like this run's entertainment methods.
It also possible the same person that liked it back then was not entertained by segments which were played similarly because they've seen it already and want something different.
This is the 9th SMB warpless submission that got votes. All the previous 8 had much fewer No/Meh votes than this. I won't say that it is impossible that a bunch of new people conveniently joined TASVideos just now and they don't like HappyLee's choices for entertainment, or that a bunch of people suddenly changed their minds or got tired of the 'same thing', despite they didn't get tired in the last 7 times and this run isn't that similar to the previous ones. However, it's not reasonable to point to these possibilities as explanations to the votes while there is a much simpler and more likely possibility: people are voting No because of the discussion that happened 1 month ago, and not because of how entertained they were by the movie. I'm aware the votes won't affect the movie's tier or the judging process, by the way. I know it's not a big deal. I'm bringing this up simply because that's not how we are supposed to vote.

All you have is speculation which is based on your assumed theory that people are voting negatively ONLY because of what happened with a different submission. While your theory MAY be correct; it's also just as possible that your theory MAY be incorrect, and people voted the way they did because it's actually their opinion of the run. Everyone finds different things entertaining and unentertaining. No matter how fantastic/entertaining you feel your own work is, it's wrong to project your hurt ego into someone else's reasoning for picking the voting options they chose. Doing so again suggests an egocentric view that you and your desires are more important to the site than the perspectives of the community.
That's ABSOLUTELY bullshit and you know it. This submission got 6 No and 4 Meh votes, a total of 10 negative votes (20% of total). MrWint's submission got 1 No and 3 Meh votes, a total of 4 negative votes (10% of total). HappyLee's previous movie got a single No vote (1% of total). And the movie before that, also done by HappyLee, got 1 No and 1 Meh vote (4% of total). And so on. Either everyone suddenly doesn't like HappyLee's entertainment choices for SMB anymore (which they consistently used to like for many years), or the reason they are voting No and Meh are completely unrelated to the movie.

This cancellation leaves a bad taste in my mouth..... This was a yes vote for me, but I understand the perspective of mehs and nos being cast because of the seemingly sub optimal slowdowns. However, I think you would be batsh*t crazy to argue that a lot of the mehs and nos aren't related to Mr Wint's run and the ensuing argument. If you are sincerely voting no because of the movie itself, that's quite alright. If you're voting no because HL's treatment of Mr. Wint upset you, well.... I'm not sure if there's validity in that. But at any rate, a real shame this was cancelled, it should be on this site, which exists to house the fastest TASes held to the most stringent standards, does it not?
Indeed, I think it's pretty obvious most of the 'no' votes are from people who sided with MrWint in the previous discussion, and not from people who truly disliked the movie. That's not how one is supposed to vote. It's comprehensible why HappyLee is upset. BTW, a solid yes vote from me! It's amazing 2 more cycles could be shaved off from MrWint's TAS. Awesome work, you two!

As we know, the continued fraction 1+1/(1+1/(1+1/(1+... = phi, ie. the golden ratio. One of the simplest and most traditional ways to see this, ie. to solve the value of the continued fraction is to notice that the first denominator is exactly the same as the whole thing. Thus we can say that if x is the continued fraction, then: x = 1+1/x We can convert that to polynomial form (by multiplying both sides by x and bringing everything to the left side): x2 - x - 1 = 0 When you apply your favorite method of solving the quadratic equation, we get the famous result x = (1 ± sqrt(5))/2, which is the definition of phi. One of the two possible solutions is negative, approximately -0.618. But this raises the question of how the continued fraction can give a negative value. Where is the negative answer coming from? Is there a step in the solution that made a wrong assumption, or missed something, giving two values for the continued fraction, one of them negative?
I don't know if that's the answer you are looking for, but simply x = 1 + 1/x doesn't imply x = 1+1/(1+1/(1+1/(1+... See how a different infinite fraction can lead to the same equation: x = 1/(-1 + 1/(-1 + 1/(-1 + 1... x = 1/(x-1) 1/x = x-1 1/x + 1 = x

That's a very nice idea! Super Mario World would also be a source for interesting content, especially the history of the any% branch. I also have (very disabling) English limitations, but I definitely could help with such a project.

Hello and welcome to TASVideos! I always like to see new people interested in TASing Super Mario World, and I like the hack you chose as well. Unfortunately, from the encode it's easy to see there are a lot of optimization flaws, so this submission can't be accepted on TASVideos. Super Mario World is a game that you need to know a lot to make an optimal TAS. You can find information on the SMW game resource page, on Youtube videos such the series Let's Glitch Super Mario World, and on SMW Discord servers. However, I noticed lack of knowledge is definitely not the only problem here. It's easy to see by the rerecord count that you rushed a LOT the making of this TAS. You need much more patience and caution to make an optimal run.

Don't worry if you can't find the mistake. I only found it because I know a little bit the story from the four-color theorem. This is essentially Kempe's flawed proof of 1879, it took mathematicians eleven years to find the mistake. It's very complicated for an April fools joke. I'll refer to the written version of the "proof" instead of the video, because it is easier. Look at Figure 2b. The counterexample follows when you flip the red-green ring to pass below (circling the b-y blocks below instead instead of the y block above). Similarly, you can flip the blue-green ring and make it pass above, with the r-y blocks inside instead of only the y block. That's possible when the green block attached to the blue block marked 'b' also touches the one marked 'r'. If the rings circle this way, it is possible that the yellow-blue chain attached to the 'y' block above touches the yellow-red chain attached to the 'y' block below. When you have a blue block from the first chain touching a red one from the second, you cannot swap colors as claimed, and the argument fails. If you cannot understand it with me writing, there's a drawing on Fig. 9 in this article. It's extremely tricky, no wonder it took so long to find the error :)
It's indeed very hard to find the mistake, but I was surprised it took mathematicians more than a decade! I did assume it was something easier to spot, as it was stated as an April fools video. This is the simplest structure of a counter example I could make, based on the drawing of the author of the video. I'm not sure how to reduce the size, so have this huge picture.

I think the show slowed down too much in the middle of the third season, after Toffee was gone. Nevertheless, the last few episodes were very good. Unfortunately they did go too far with the ships and now inevitably a good part of the viewers will be unsatisfied. Still, I'm definitely looking forward to the 4th season - I personally hope to see Janna and Buff Frog again, they were good characters who disappeared in the middle of 3rd season.

So the extra exits are forbidden because of those 2 forbidden techniques? We don't want to list the rules in the labels, only critical differences and unique goals. If there's a cherry-picked set of tricks that are forbidden to make it more entertaining, we could also list them in the movie description (if we haven't already). I'd need to know if those extra exits are sacrificed for speed or for entertainment.
The extra exits are forbidden for entertainment. In SMW, after you clear each switch palace some blocks appear to help Mario in some levels. It is more interesting to beat these levels without those blocks.

I don't think there is a good label that communicates Mario is always small, Yoshi is forbidden, switch palaces are forbidden and goal is maximum exits. It's already pretty obvious by the length of the TAS that it's not a sort of small only any%. And since every goal is listed in the movie description, it might be better to leave the branch name as it is.

Why? Can you tell the rules and goals so we understand better what to put in the label?
Well, I didn't read most of the replies here, but if what you want is to make the label to communicate every goal of the run, you would end up with ''small only, no riding yoshi, maximum exits, no switch palaces''. I'd say staying with ''small only'' is best.

Using the same logic you mentioned about Walkathon, I think it should probably be "small only, 86 exits". If someone manages to make a small only with more than 86 exits, it will be labeled appropriately and obsolete this one.
Amaraticando recently found an extra exit is possible, and an 88 exit TAS is coming. Some people are suggesting "maximum exits'', that's not a good label though, as 4 more exits are obviously possible (the switch palaces) and they are forbidden in this category.

Due to emulation differences, it seems, this glitch only properly works on bizhawk. So here's my final contribution to this frame war - the sound keeps being played and 2 more frames were saved: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/46203945145861933 Edit: 2623 is possible, which a bit of a different strat at the end! Unfortunately I made it on lsnes, and bizhawk isn't converting the movies correctly: http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/46204067656738815

I don't understand why I can't get the glitch sound to last longer. So, for now, have this 7 frames faster movie http://tasvideos.org/userfiles/info/46202027493160286 Here Mario touches the shell twice, which makes it impossible to the sound to last. But even if I avoid touching the shell it also stops, so I'm not sure what's going on there.

I agree with most of Masterjun's points. Igor is doing a great work and if it's submitted as it is, it surely should be accepted, but there are some ways to improve even more the freerun. The stun glitch is obviously overused. It is an awesome glitch and it must be performed more than once in the glitchfest, to show off many of its possible outcomes, but Igor is doing it in almost every stage in a way it gets really repetitive. Also, I believe he should spend less time in each level. You don't need to show everything a level has to offer if most of it can be shown later on. Lastly, I consider it's a very bad idea to do 96 exit. I would like to see every world done, but through a route that only shows the levels with the most entertainment potential.
