Flygon: Sorry, my browser's been acting up lately. The thing is when I do edit, Firefox keeps giving me errors talking about "The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression." That often frustrates me a lot because it doesn't go through. But I'll try my best to check "minor edit" if I do want to edit again.

ive been watching all wips so its ok im still go for a 100% run, can you beat it ?
wicked: If you want to, I'll let you have the 100%. I don't care if that means collecting everything, or even 100% kills - I'll leave that to you. Thanks!

BoltR's thanks are on the very bottom - I didn't forget! mklip: The Cobra goes invincible when firing. If I shoot at it, it would not count as a hit and I would waste ammo. That's why I had to wait and pick the right frame to fire the laser on such a late note.

Sorry to bump if so, but the savings keep coming! It looked like I was at 323 frames saved leaving Route 11, but now I'm at 353 after defeating Destro. This new WIP/attempt also includes an improved "Destro Dance Revolution" sequence as if Gen. Hawk is forced to wait until Destro turns back to human, so I would like some feedback about the dance - I thought it would look real good with my upcoming submission. Another thing, I did conserve 3 bullets of ammo coming out of the Destro defeat. Instead of waiting for another laser ray to shoot out, I switched to knee-drop to finish Destro. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/545854800/gi.joe2.attempt4.C0DE.RED.fm2

^does this mean you'll be able to park right next to bosses and spam them full of laser? :D
Inzult: Woah, now, put that gun back in the holster. That's where I conserve ammo. If I want to put on a real laser show, I would only shoot lasers at bosses and mini-bosses that just stand in one spot (like Destro). But if these bosses keep moving very often, the plans suddenly change. I use knee-drops to conserve ammo.

I'll just upload what I got and pick up on it again when I get time. When I said that I was willing to focus on the standalone POW's on Route 06 and 11, I really meant it! There were 8 on the mountain and 4 more along the swamp. I powered up the laser gun to LV 4 again, didn't waste too much time killing enemies, and have 180 bullets to last me through the rest of the game. I have 323 frames saved so far. If I lose frames, that's more likely because of luck manipulation. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/285658160/gi.joe2.attempt4.C0DE.RED.fm2

I'll give you guys a little update. After defeating Overkill, it's pretty tough to be fast through Route 06 while it's very hard to mimic BoltR's input, due to lag and synchronization. The only thing I can think of as for improvement to my recent input to Route 06 - I want to focus only on the standalone POW's that were placed on the ground, while avoiding and/or flying past most falling enemies. This includes falling enemies that drop bouncing POW's. There is a good possibility that I can tone down more frames if this strategy is done correctly. But after completing this stage, I can utilize at least three of the standalone POW's found in Route 11 going toward Area D. I don't want to waste a lot of frames defeating enemies with bouncing POW's if I don't have to. But I do want to make sure I have a LV 4 laser gun by the time I reach Area D. I also want to try to get at least 180 bullets, therefore, conserving will also play a role here. So basically, people, the keyword of this strategy is "standalone", not bouncing. I'm going to give this a try and see what I can pull.

For this bunny-hopping trick, was this a glitch, a technique, or both? I'll wait for a pre-encode before I vote.

wicked: Use whatever powerful weapons by all means and don't waste a lot of frames messing around. What I can tell you is that for Gen. Hawk to have LV4 barehands, there is an annoying mini-boss in Area A and it gets brought out again in Area D and twice in Area F. I find it okay to score a 2 hit combo on this mini-boss where a jump-kick does damage of 3 and then a couple frames later, a knee-drop that does damage of 8. You might score additional damage point(s) when flying back from a knee drop. That includes one or two more from regular punches, or 8 more just by shooting LV4 lasers if both rays connect. If you look at my third WIP and my latest one I posted late last night (I'm still sleepy, but a 6-Hour Power is the only thing that's keeping me awake right now), you'll see how the use of bare hands and weapons have been well-utilized during fly-backs - have made fights as short as they're able to get.

I stayed up all night, couldn't sleep. Played more GI Joe 2 starting with Area A. The first two stages are the same. But I have implemented BoltR's input when saving the third hostage. Plus, I chose a different method of defeating Overkill. Battling Overkill, using Inzult's rapid-kick technique seemed much faster than using a single knee-drop when you're cornered. I only used the knee-drop when Overkill is right next to me and the rapid-kicks won't connect. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/620153409/gi.joe2.attempt4.C0DE.RED.fm2

Okay, a third WIP at 7:54.57 http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/364682913/gi.joe2.wip3.C0DE.RED.fm2 Now there's a reason I'll be planning a fourth attempt. I reviewed BoltR's unfinished TAS. Here's a converted FM2 of his attempt. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/529890821/GI2.fm2 I couldn't help but notice that Area A and Route 06 was improvable. So this next attempt I am planning will combine the contributions of Inzult, BoltR, and myself. Put these together, and you're likely to save a few extra seconds.

wicked: Thank you, and after I get through with this run, I won't put together a 100% one. A 100% run might consist of getting all the GI Joe characters, both playable and non-playable. It would also consist of getting all 5 weapons and completing all routes and areas. I doubt that everyone would buy into that. I re-did the dance with Destro and manipulated his destination of landing. The goal here is to not waste too many frames, waiting for him to come down and re-appear. And that's how I managed to save 26 more frames, now making it 355 altogether. I figured I like this dance much better than the first attempt, what do you guys think?! (scratch off this link, but my updated link below does contain this dance)[/color] Here's an update: I started focusing on optimizations from the 2nd attempt after I started over, while comparing that to this 3rd attempt. The second attempt was never complete and it only got up to the end of Route 13. I do have everything shaped up between the beginning and Route 13. So if I want to compare anything, it would now be between this attempt (3rd) and my first original attempt. In the 1st WIP, Hawk tagged the radio at frame 24468. In this 3rd attempt, despite all the optimizations and it does pay off, Hawk tagged the radio at frame 22869! Now with just one more stage to go, I have 1599 frames saved altogether. Don't just "Press Your Luck", manipulate it! http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/168116789/gi.joe2.C0DE.RED.fm2

I was at 360 frames saved but I went down to 336. I might have to collect more ammo, ignore the POW's, and dance again. Or should I keep going? http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/542904251/gi.joe2.C0DE.RED.fm2

Inzult: Yeah, those HP's sound about right! I never even bothered to see how many knee drops it took to defeat the minibosses. In that case, I'll start watching the memory addresses.

Inzult: There is only one miniboss and one major boss on Area D, but there are several on Area F. I'm once again on Area D with two rooms left to go before I meet Destro. Now this time, I have a change of plans for Destro. That boss battle will be known as "Destro Dance Revolution" where Gen. Hawk takes the dance floor. Destro on the other hand will be a disco ball floating around the screen; Gen. Hawk must avoid this while dancing! It may take a lot of re-records just for this.

But even so, you're using laser against most bosses, right?
That's only if I have enough bullets, but since I would have to give up extra frames to collect more ammo, I would lay low and conserve. It took 51 bullets to defeat the Cobra Commander, while it took 66 to set an SDA record. Would I try 48 or lower? I weigh out the options, but good question! There is a way to conserve bullets and score 3 hits per bullet, and that is a level 3 hand gun! There should be enough POW's in Route 11 to power up this weapon. If you're saying that a single kick does 3 damage and assume that a level 3 handgun does 3 damage if they all hit the same (mini)boss, then there is finally a possibility that we can optimize and proceed. :)

As usual, the best thing I had to do was to power up the laser gun straight to LV 4 before I reached Area D. Another thing I had to do was to collect ammunition on Route 11. There were several more boxes of ammo I was able to get, but then I would kill more frames collecting them. This is the run toward Route 11, where I tagged that radio on frame 13838 compared to 14197 last time. So far, approximately 360 frames quicker altogether. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1678691249/gi.joe2.C0DE.RED.fm2 Inzult: Looking ahead, I noticed that Gen. Hawk is given a missile launcher after defeating Destro. This will greatly impact your kicking pattern for the minibosses beyond Area D. The reason is because it will take 4 to 8 frames (instead of 2 to 4) to cycle from the laser gun back to bare hands. For this, I would really advise using the other method, the frame-by-frame punch. If you still have one of my fully-completed WIP's from before, fast forward all the way to Route 16 and try your luck against their miniboss. Maybe you might come up with something better. I think I got the rest. ;)

I re-did Route 02 and tagged its radio at frame 3943. Last time, I tagged it on 4081. There were three things I had to do here. I had to put bare hands on LV4, fight the miniboss (taking damage to deal with Hawk's invisibility which I thought seemed difficult), and collect 2 POW's toward a level 2 handgun. Why level 2 handgun you may ask? To be more prepared to face a miniboss on the second floor of Area A, of course! I want to score two hits on that miniboss, for every bullet used which seems to turn things up a notch. And I can't do anything with the extra POW's I come across until I defeat Overkill anyway. http://www.fileden.com/files/2010/5/29/2874529/gi.joe2.C0DE.RED.fm2 I also came across this image contributed by calthaer if this helps any.

I got your opening route, and that miniboss battle seemed quicker than the way I had it in mind. I'll have to study that. It's pretty easy to get LV4 barehand because you got 4 more POW's on Route 02. I got that covered. To me, it's crucial to collect POW's and ammunition for the laser gun once Overkill is defeated. We know that 12 POW's will put any weapon on LV4, including the laser gun. And for that, I can find 11 POW's on Route 06 (mountain climb) and then top it off with 1 more on Route 11 (going toward Area D). Inzult:There has been improvements, believe it or not. This was my progress until you volunteered that improved mini-boss battle. I went as far as Route 13 (after defeating Destro). http://www.fileden.com/files/2010/5/29/2874529/gi.joe.2.wip.2.C0DE.RED.fm2

I was almost done with the optimization, but now I got to go back! Grr.... I found out that as long as there are not too many objects moving around the screen to cause a lag, and Gen. Hawk has LV 4 bareness; I discovered a more simple frame-by-frame punch pattern. It's kinda like the one that Inzult demonstrated, but this time, it's B-Right-B-Right-per-frame and B-Left-B-Left-per-frame depending on where these minibosses are located. I doubt that this will work on Route 01 because Gen. Hawk only had enough icons to power up to LV 3 bareness. Here's a recap of Route 01. And this time, I did a different change of plans on Route 02 - I reduced the number of bouncing power-up icons to avoid lag, got LV 4 bareness early, demonstrated the new punching pattern, and touched the second radio icon at frame 4081. On my full WIP, I didn't get to that same radio until frame 4170. http://www.fileden.com/files/2010/5/29/2874529/incomplete-053010-1.gi.joe.2.C0DE.RED.fm2

The run was a little boring but several things were nicely laid out. I'll give a Meh vote. Now what's the problem about combining TAS and entertainment into a microgame?
twisted eye: Still, it's hard to make many of the microgames entertaining.

There has been days where some of the emulator movies I viewed, suddenly turned into 404 errors and "Data error accessing video" messages. Many other users have experienced the same thing. Whatever's going on with Microstorage since the last time I used it, is beyond me. I'll start free-hosting emulator movies using FileDen until everything's straightened out. If anyone wants to use FileDen, well, a downside is that free-users get ads, capped webspace at 1GB, and capped monthly bandwidth of 5GB. However, if you're only going to use it just to free-host small emulator movies the same way you would at Microstorage, then I don't think that capped monthly bandwidth should be a big deal.

Okie-doke! :) Guys, this gets even better! Now it takes 630 frames, instead of 725, to defeat Overkill. How many of you love optimization?! http://www.fileden.com/files/2010/5/29/2874529/overkill-LV4.630.fm2 I chose to use Fileden to free-host emulator movies since I had problems using Microstorage. Don't worry, it's safe.
