I gave this a shot the other day. I came to the conclusion that I don't know how anyone has the patience to make TASes. Mad respect to you all. I'd love to see it done. This game is very challenging and has a bunch of different weapons with different/interesting dynamics. I couldn't find an existing topic on this, but my apologies if I'm just useless with forum search. I'll put a bounty of $20 on this. I usually just donate it all straight to TASVideos, but I'd split it 50/50 with the person making the TAS if they so desired. It's not a huge incentive, but I like donating to this site, as it provides me with a nearly endless supply of fun videos to watch.

Imposing an upper time limit on TASes is a lame idea. There are boring TASes that have no entertainment value in 10 minutes. This one was entertaining to me all the way through. I watched this whole thing, without skipping. I kept a transcript handy for when text went too fast.

Last, I approve the choice of the Genesis version over the Saturn version. The Genesis version has better music and faster loading times.
I'd like to second this. The Saturn loading times are bonkers. It takes several seconds for the image containing the "Loading..." text to load, then a few times longer for the level to actually load.

I made a terribad SD encode just for kicks while watching this. Don't whine about how bad it is. I know all too well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpFTVLvs4YA (Part 1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMMT_D9AW0U (Part 2)

I find it strange that a lot of voters are complaining about the visuals. For me, that was the highlight of the TAS. I found the game to be beautiful, so much so that I was excited about every room change just to see what the hack designer's imagination could throw at us. I even took some snapshots to prove my point: Edit: Voted yes, obviously.
I'm going to have to second that. I enjoyed the entirety of this run and watched all 30-odd minutes of it. The highlight for me was the variations on the concepts from the original game. The TAS is nothing special, but without drastic gameplay modifications, there are going to be tactics reused. Nice hack, nice TAS.

This game is a cruel exercise in graph theory. Your explanations really add something to it. Good job!

Then again, that's me these days. Twenty years ago I might well have had a different opinion.
Well, that's exactly it. I got it all eventually, but the number of hours I poured into it... Just nuts. I don't think I ever actually beat it on Hard. Might give it a try again now, but my skills are even weaker now than when I was a kid with too much free time. TASes are kind of how I relive these old games. I don't even play all that much any more, though I've been working my way through NSMBW recently, and am kind of addicted to League of Legends at the moment.

Been waiting for this game to get a good TAS treatment for a very long time. I am not disappointed. I owned the cart as a kid. What a frustrating game! Anyways, as a display of appreciation, I just donated $20 to TASvideos. Thanks for your hard work!

I wonder how possible a 100% run would be that goes through every field at least once.

VERY YES I'm in agreement that it could possibly be better optimized, but optimization has never kept me from voting yes.

I'm just idly speculating, mostly. I've made the choice to financially support TASVideos.org to some degree, and so I will continue to do so. I'm just trying to think of creative ways to use that money. :)

I would be interested in donating money specifically towards an award for SMS/GG TASes. The system is close to my heart and I'd like to see more done with it.

sgrunt makes a valid point. "Yes" for a playaround submission, but "No" for this.

A good WIP. Convoluted or not, I feel a bit cheated out of a full game. I say finish them up.
I agree. Maybe try once without luck manip and once with? It might be faster to just spew blocks as fast as possible than wait for the right one. Short, sweet, and fast. Now if I could only convince women those qualities are admirable...

I figured this was amusing nonsense from the start, but I went with it to see how things developed. I'm sad to hear that there are difficulties. This site is one of my favourites. Though I've never really had the motivation to become involved in the community, I do spend a lot of time watching the wonderful things you guys produce here. There are some truly fantastic feats of engineering that have come about through this site! As a programmer myself (currently interned with IBM, developer of the foo_vorbisstream component for foobar2000, etc.), you all are inspirations to me. Sadly, I am too busy doing what I do to really be able to get involved in yet another web community. The fact that I haven't registered an account on the forums here until now reflects that. I registered to voice my support. I'd rather watch TAS runs than TV-Show-X. As a currently gainfully-employed man, there is one thing that I can give to the community: funding. So expect something like that from me. However, there are a finite number of games, and a theoretical maximum speed for any given game. It stands to reason that eventually all decent games will have perfect speed runs. This point is a long time away, but it is something to consider. As the speed runs become more technically perfect, they will also create significant psychological barriers against those seeking to one-up them as well. I watched Baxter's Tetris run last night and it made me think that perhaps we should allow for more creative, fun runs like these. If the focus is truly enjoyment, that was one of the most amusing things I've seen here in a while! I can only watch so much glitching before it gets a bit boring, but I could probably stomach half-a-dozen different Tetris runs all done creatively. May TASVideos.org live forever. Insofar as I am concerned, I will do my utmost to keep it that way. You guys help me unwind after a long day at work. I'm vaguely disheartened that I can't be more involved here, but in the end, I still value all of your contributions quite greatly, and I am willing to put my money where my mouth is.
