Yes and no. The source code for the best DS emulator is "closed", meaning there's no way to implement rerecording into it.

I calculated how many rerecords it would take to to bot a respectable 10 seconds. Let the screenshot speak for itself.

my rampage run that beats the game by holding turbo a the whole time... simplest bot ever! (if you consider StickyKeys to be a bot, which I do ;)
Reminds me of a time I put a rock on the mouse (on a laptop) and set a record for the game Hold The Button.

The sheer amount of time required to make one of these runs is really discouraging me. I spent over half an hour working on one level of a game and ended up with approximately one minute of gameplay that wasn't anywhere close to optimized.
I just spent 4 hours optimizing turning through 3 corners in Densetsu No Stafy... Some games are just harder than others. What game are you TASing?

That was like a wicked drug trip. I just sat back and absorbed the insanity. I hope the Mario quad will be crowded enough for that effect to take place if you want it to, or you can actually focus if you want. Some parts were like, "damn I missed a boss fight" but I was tripping out so much it was like "damn I missed a boss fight but who gives?"

I think entertainment comes from seeing something that is FUN TO WATCH. Now, I personally found this FUN TO WATCH. Anything that beats my favourite game show this fast gets a yes in my book.

Wikipedia Article Pretty fun Japanese game, good movement speed. I'll post a WIP soon. It has some boss fights, which are ridiculously fast in a TAS. In level 3, Stafy gets an attack where he dashes forwards, so that will be the main method of motion.

I was screwing around with NEStopia on my Mac, and I somehow managed to discover not 1, but 2 new glitches. Unfortunately, as NEStopia does not have recording, I don't know exactly what happened. Unfortunately, this screenshot doesn't accurately show what happens. Basically, I shoved a bob-omb into the wall - if you zoom in, you can see about a third of it. This next glitch is far more interesting. As you can see, Mario is going through a wall. However, I did not duck to go through the wall. So I somehow went through a wall without going through a corner or the ceiling. If anyone can reproduce this on a recording emulator, that would be very good.

Why would it not? Not going to get every coin on Bowser 3 and then just jump off the edge is he?

I'd suggest just starting from a 120-star file and submitting the finished run as a concept demo. Then there'd be no need to collect "extra" stars just for the sake of beating the game.
If possible, I agree, and I still think getting the special Triple Jump off Yoshi, whilst not necessary would be good additional quirk to this run.
Your post advocates both beating the game and not beating the game. WTF?

No, because this run takes a fair amount of luck-manipulation to get the right questions. Anyway, "easy to optimize" doesn't mean shit. My Jurassic Park III run has way more rerecords than Excite Bike. They're both very optimal (I would be astonished if anyone added 1 frame to the JPIII run). Still, Excite Bike has way more entertainment value.

Man, I went away for Victoria Day weekend - only for a day - and a movie's been sent in and rejected! I think it deserved publication.

Bah to all you naysayers. I actually think this is a fun concept for a TAS. It's four minutes, so it's not like it gets slow.

I had a thought for the any%. When fighting a boss, you often reach a point where the boss can't be hurt, but you can be, right? So, during one of these points, take damage with timing such that Baby Mario has 0 stars left when the boss dies. That way, the score screen goes faster. The entertainment comes not from the extra speed, but from knowing attention was paid to such a fine detail.

I think it's just random during the question (That would be the most logical) but I'm not sure.

Even more confusing when you consider that French has a weirder grammatical system... That question could be interpreted as "What does the earth orbit?" or "What orbits the earth?". On-topic: Does the game always have the same sequence of answers or could you have the same answer, but sometimes the right one is D and sometimes A?

A list of sequence breaks i think could be abused: 1. Skip Mt. Moon (?) 2. Get to pokemon league without 8 badges (?) 3. Get to cinnabar island gym early 4. Skip Nugget Bridge 5. Walk to the hall of fame without f8ing the elite 4. 6. Skip Pokemon tower 7. Skip Silph Co. This is all I can think of, any more out there?
Mount Moon can be skipped, you can actually see the other side from where you stand. Though the current route involves glitching a level 1 pokemon in Mount Moon, idk how useful it would be. Here's a revised route, if the bug is possible early on somehow: 1. Skip Mt. Moon 2. Enter Cerulean Cave 3. Catch Mewtwo with Poke Ball 4. Beat Misty after walking on water to avoid her junior trainers 5. Walk to Saffron (Skipping the guard buildings), beat Sabrina (Skipping warping) 6. Walk to Vermillion, get bike voucher, beat LT Surge (Skipping the trash-can part), Escape Rope back to Cerulean 7. Get Bike, bike to Celadon by going over Saffron 8. Beat Erika, skipping the trainers by walking on top of them (lol) 9. Get Fly from recluse 10. Bike to Fuchsia, beat Koga (Skipping Invisible Wall) 11. Fly to pallet, or maybe not, but in any case bike on water to Cinnabar, beat Blaine (Skipping questions) 12. Fly to Viridian, beat Giovanni (Skipping the maze in the gym) 13. Go past badge guards 14. Bike over obstacles, etc to reach Elite Four fast 15. Go through doors to get to Hall of Fame registry. I don't even KNOW how much time that saves... It's a lot! Of course, it's counting on the fact that it would be possible to acquire the glitch item that lets you go through walls (Which I'm assuming exists). How many attacks would Mewtwo need to know? Assuming that all hits are OHKO, and only Gym Leaders are fought: 2 for Misty 4 for Sabrina (6) 4 for Lt. Surge (10) 4 for Erika (14) 5 for Koga (19) 4 for Blaine (23) 5 for Giovanni (28) My guesses are probably off a lot (too lazy to research this post) but it shows that his starting moveset will be sufficient.

Unfortunately, you can only go right through walls. But, IDK the rules for going through corners. Would it be possible to go through that corner and keep going left?

I'm using Snes9x 1.43 for Mac, and I made a little video of scoring a 1-up by jumping in the 1st level. I want to record a QuickTime video of it, but Snes9x crashes when I play back the .smv with "Record Quicktime" checked.

I think manipulation shouldn't be TOO hard... But how do the questions display exactly? Do they slowly scroll or pop up? About manipulating for A: That would make a hilarious run. It's like, who rigged this game? That'd be as messed up as the "lucky rolls" Monopoly runs.

Also, it might be interesting to have the average movie rating per system.
Interesting. I'm guessing the stronger the system, the more the rating. But it would be opposite for technical (hard to optimize 3D games) so it balances out. Would it be possible to have some graphs on the page? Of AVI length, rating, etc.

The "special" levels are simply unlocked. The first for each level after killing Bowser. The second secret levels are unlocked upon scoring 100% in all 9 other levels (heh heh).

Interesting... Have you tried luck-manipulating to get shorter questions? It's a fairly common strategy for some games. I think it's a little disappointing about the input rules, it'd be funny to watch him decide the answer before anything comes up... But I do enjoy trivia, and 15 questions lined up was amusing for me. Question: When you made this, did you try to figure out the right answers, or just go A, B, C, D trying to find the right one?
