There is an option for leaving the level. Pause, and there's a "quit level" option. As for levels, each level takes about 2 minutes on the first run and less on the second, because of the fact that you get dash engine. At 2 minutes per 6 levels, that's 12 minutes, maybe 1 minute for ranking, 18. So the run wouldn't be excessively long.

I have a weird ability to kill a topic with an excessively long post that no one reads through but they think they shouldn't post because I might have said it in my post. I mean, take that post I just did in Pokemon Snap. It's one of the longest posts ever. I think it's longer than the forum rules. On topic, BUMP. Which isn't really on topic.

Keep in mind that though it will involve constant shutter-clicking, but it will be utterly, smacktackularly fast. By your logic, the Super Mario TASes are frame-perfect running with the occasional jump. Yawn. Let's make this more of a demonstration of the highest scoring things you can do. With only 1 photo ever taken of any pokemon, it would be interesting. Having this game on hard copy, I've often taken 50 shots of the same thing hoping one will work best. Here, only 1 is necessary. Unfortunately, I do see one drawback: Each level must be played 2-3 times. Here's a sort of "route": Level 1 (beach): Get a photo of Lapras in the background each time it appears. This'll shift it closer, until the best shot near Kangaskhan. 3430 points. Get a fluke photo of Butterfree (All good photos are taken by luck). 4960 points. Get a nice shot of Eevee. 4500 points. Snap a photo of gust-using pidgey. 5100 points. Total of 17990 points. That's enough points for the apple item. Perfect, because one of the best pokemon for score is Electrode. Do nothing until there's a chance to hit the second Electrode in the tunnel with an apple (If it wastes no time, shift the camera to watch Pikachu and later Electabuzz get pwned). Get a shot on the frame with maximum size bonus. 5150. The blast knocks Kakuna off the ceiling. The best shot is worth 4540. Get a shot of Haunter. Again, the best shots are flukes. 4000. Get 3 shots of Diglett, one each time he pops up. Not for score, just to make Dugtrio come out. 3 dugtrio, 9 moles in total. Dugtrio is worth 4780. Get good shots of Magnemite then Magneton, and then pick off the Electrode at the last moment. Magnemite and Magneton are worth 4260 and 4000, respectively. That's 44720 points, total. No bonuses this time. Level 3: At the start, the first Rapidash might be possible to lure into a shot with the 2 other Rapidash in it. In any case, Rapidash is worth 5170. Vulpix can be lured together with apples, so they should be. 5020. While we're waiting, throw an apple between Magmar and Charmander over there, to watch Magmar KO Charmander. Charmander evolves (WTF?) into Charmeleon and pays back the favour. Not a photo, just funny. At the first possible moment (I think that's best) throw an apple at the Moltres egg. The best photo gets 1350 pose, 1000 size, and technique bonus for 4700. Throw an apple between the 2 magmars, and snap one attacking the other. 6710. Get a photo of Charmeleon celebrating as you give it an apple. 4400. Then knock him into the lava! He'll evolve into Charizard, which can be hit with another apple. He'll do a fire attack, worth up to 4380. That point total is now 75100, barely unlocking Pester Balls (75,000). Level 4: Hit Bulbasaur of those stumps with Pester Balls, and use Apples to get the best points. Worth 5380, more than the alternative (Poliwag). Get a picture of the first slowpoke. Something's worth 4400, but I don't know what. Don't bother evolving the second slowpoke... yet... Knock down the last Metapod for long enough to hit the Psyduck, knock down the other 3 Metapods, and snap a photo of Psyduck leaping out of the water. Hit the Metapod to hit it up (originally was "knock" but... yeah...), then maybe hit it back down for a shot. 4470. Hit those 2 porygon with Pester Balls to reveal the hiding places and get photos. 5610. Congratulations for reading this far. PM me this phrase: "Quartz jock vends BMW glyph fix" to get mentioned in my signature. Hit the Porygon over the switch (why the hell can't you get out and touch the switch? dumb) to unlock level 5. That's 94960 points. Level 5: Get shots of 3 Zubat at the start, for points at the end. Get shots of the 2 distant Grimer. A grimer appears quite close on a ledge. 4300. Evolve him into Muk with Pester Balls for 4000. Unmorph all 3 Ditto with Pester Balls and get a shot of them close together. 4940. Get a nice photo of Koffing chasing Jigglypuff, then pick him off with a Pester Ball. Get a shot of that. Then kill the other two, more distant Koffing. 4400. Evolve Weepingbell. Photo. 5900. Get a photo of 3 Zubat flying toward the camera near the exit. 4330. Get the 3 jigglypuff singing. The photo is worth 6480. Then quickly end course before the long exit animation plays. Big level - boosts the score to 129,310. Level 6: Hit all 3 squirtles with Pester Balls. They get hit onto an island and you can get a photo. 5260. Throw pester balls in the water for Goldeen, Dratini and Magikarp. Worth 4400 each (evidently 1000 size and 1200 pose). Throw a pester ball onto a distant spot where a Magikarp flops around. He'll flop onto land, a mankey will punch him, and Magikarp flies over the mountains. Hit the Geodudes with a pester ball to get Sandshrew. Get both Sandshrew together and happy, they're worth 4990. There are 2 more distant Geodudes. Hit them with Pester Balls and they fall, knocking off a Graveler, revealing a Sandslash. Give him an apple for a good pose. 4800. Go down the steep valley. Look over to the ledge there, and you'll hear "eeeeeeyyooooooooo... thud... buh-karp-karp-karp". Nice hangtime, Mankey! Hit the Magikrap (typo intended) with a pester ball, and he'll evolve into Gyarados. Gyarados is worth 4680. Get a centered photo of Staryu, then another as he comes near you. Then repeat for the other two. Then get a well-timed shot for 3730. The Staryu go into a whirlpool. They come out evolved. Get a shot of them flying away for 4380. Throw multiple pester balls into the whirlpool (it flashes if the shot worked) to get Dragonite. The best pose is with his mouth open roaring. 4400. There's a Squirtle over there. Hit it with a pester ball to send it up the mountain, hitting Mankey off. Later, you can get a shot of him for 4500. But it might not be worth it until you have dash, because you need to get the secret exit. However, the score is so close to getting the dash engine, at 174,750, it's worth snapping him for the dash engine. Then nail him with a Pester Ball. The score will be 179,250 at this point. I have written more than I ever have before here. This post took about 2 hours to write. For now, it's generally: get the poke flute and snap whatever you missed in the earlier levels. Get level 3's pokemon sign, it's at the start. Throw a pester ball into the mini volcano for koffing smoke.

Here's an idea: The character can swing off whatever he wants to. So when going up a ladder, rather than climb, he backflips his way up to the top. When crossing a gap, he falls and swings off a wall and shoots forward in gravity-aided speed!

With no temporary invincibility, if you get hit at all you're dead. Which encourages TASing because the game is otherwise so hard. Trying to make a TAS-proof game is like trying to not get killed with hundreds of people after you. No matter what, there's a way around it. If an item drop is at X time, the player will do whatever "spring cleaning" is necessary and pick up the item at the exact right time. One game, Castlevania 64, which is on my list of "Might get around to someday" games, has an item drop which happens at 2:00 am in the game's clock. One item sets in-game time to 6:00 pm. So exactly 8 hours (time goes fast) before reaching the location of the drop, I use the item. Ta-da!

Know what's weird? When I saw the run was published, I wanted to download the AVI ASAP. Then the publication was removed before I had a chance. Then it was published again, and the site went down. Edit: Now, the AVI doesn't work on my Mac. All I get is a white screen when I play it on Quicktime. Do the AVIs on this site have trouble with macs?

Well, my goal was to end with 999,950 points, because of the fact that this impresses the viewer and he thinks that this is the highest possible score. I think that getting "as many points as possible" would get... old... although I do have some parts (1-1 coin cache) where I could get more points. Unfortunately, I can't find that good ROM anywhere. Seriously, I looked all over the 'net and couldn't find it. On an unrelated note, what's your e-mail address? Mine's chamale_ic@hotmail.com.

What I meant was last input would be 7 seconds earlier. The grabbing-last-star time would be maybe 10 frames shorter.

For around 10 minutes I kept trying to go to tasvideos.org and it always said the server didn't work. Now it's back up. When I used www.tasvideos.org, it said "you should be looking here" and it linked to a "server down" page. I e-mailed bisqwit about it, and I tried to go on after sending the e-mail and the website was back up. Did anyone else have problems like mine?

Turtle shell bouncing gets so many points, this run would be identical to the no warps runs but with leeching in some spots. So, no leeching. Here's a WIP: http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/4203/phil%2Cgenisto2-smb1-full.fcm Note that the run is called phil+genisto2-smb1-full. I accidentally recorded off their movie and didn't notice until 1-3, and was too lazy to restart. I plan to see how many points this gets, and figure out what wasted the most time per point. So if this ends with a score of 1,099,950, I will figure out what the slowest 100,000 points to get were. Out of curiosity, what does WIP stand for? Edit: Nevermind, means "Work In Progress". I should google before posting dumb stuff like that.

Hey, I have an idea. I'm either a genius or there's a very obvious reason this won't work. I notice that the current run kills Bowser at about 15:12, then finishes the text at 15:17, then there's a 7 second animation with the star coming out of him, and mario dashes left to grab the star. But, what if mario was slightly to the left, so after the text finishes at 15:17 the run is over and the star lands on him? There might be some reason, i.e. the star is always a little to the left of mario. So, we have him run/jump to the side at the last possible moment, and he freezes during the text and animation, then keeps moving, like in that level, (verb) the big bully (too lazy to check the level's name right now). The run could be 7 seconds shorter!

Of course, there are probably 60 pokemon along the route. Let me explain. Say you have 59 pokemon caught, and you're on a route with some pokemon you haven't caught. If you have an evolution stone, and a pokemon it evolves, it would still be quicker to simply catch the pokemon rather than evolving it. However, if catching every single pokemon along the way still isn't enough, rare candies will be necessary. Probably for pokemon like Wurmple, because they can be caught early near evolution.

I think I can optimize this run by a couple frames. Am I allowed to submit an updated WIP at this point in the game? EDIT: False alarm. I thought I had made a jump that was a couple frames off in level 10, but it's optimized.

Because of the fact that you have to reset the game to use the control enemy glitch, it would be slower in some places. In fact, it might be slower in all places, because you can just manipulate a miss so they die anyway. Of course, if they drop a great item, then you should use control enemy glitch to get the item (unless that can be manipulated too).

I'm 90% sure that when you finish a level with 2 different times, you get the same time for fading out to the score screen. I figured this out at the end of level 5, where 2 slightly different routes resulted in frame-identical fadeouts to the next screen. I discovered an odd glitch in this game. On level 3, if you jump off the first rooftop slope (The one that slopes like this /) you'll teleport over by 1 screen. Unfortunately, you can't move afterwards. It's like all the glitches were discovered and it was made so they still were there but were totally useless.

What I mean is, say there's a route where level 17 pidgey appear and level 18 pidgeotto. Is it quicker to catch both, or catch a Pidgey, have it in the party, and then use a Rare Candy?

Some good optimization points have been mentioned here. If there has been no improvement in a couple months, I'll go for it, but currently I'm tied up with Pokemon Red. However, the only idea I have an issue with is putting text on fast. If there's "No way of speeding it up or slowing it down", you can just hold A anyway for luck-manipulation.

It's not a paradox to have a run rejected, it just sucks! I think if at least 1/3 people vote yes, then it means that some people will enjoy watching, enough for the movie to be published! Ah, I'm Canadian, I'm used to screwy voting systems*. * In Canada, the current Prime Minister had only 36% of the vote but has 40% of the power. The Bloc had 10% of the votes and 16% of the power, while the NDP and the Greens got the worst of it. NDP had 17.5% of the vote, and has 9.5% of the power. The Greens had 4.5% of the vote, and have NO power. This post was more of a rant about Canada's crappy voting system than content. But talking about other, also crappy, voting systems helps point out that tasvideos is a repository for entertaining videos, and if 40% of people like a video, than it should be published!

Defining broken with certain standards is like telling a computer to judge beauty. It can't really work. So we need a human to decide the line between broken and whole.

What would you combine? This can be for TASing or regular play, on any system, with crossing over between systems. I would combine The Sims 2 with Age of Mythology (Age of Mythology is an RTS, in case you don't know). Here's what would happen: I would get to build my town, all age-of-mythology-like while my sister plays The Sims 2 on another computer, blissfully unaware that the games have been combined. Then I send over an army and start to destroy whatever house she is currently looking over. The Sims take out guns and start blasting at units, and eventually get killed. Then the house is destroyed, and I move on to another house. After a couple houses go down, the army rolls in, and there's an epic battle between modern technology and ancient mythology. Another good combo would be Impossible Creatures and Zoo Tycoon. In IC, there are alot of elements, but the element that would be kept would be combining 2 animals for 1 animal. So you could have a zoo with 127, 392 unique exhibits. Another idea: Combine Roller Coaster Tycoon with Zoo Tycoon. It's a super-duper theme park!

Interesting point. Do you need the 60 pokemon when you beat elite four, or can you catch them later? I wonder which pokemon would be quickest to get. Would it ever be quicker to catch pokemon and use stones or rare candy to evolve them?

I think these games have a plot too close to R/B to make an interesting new run, unless you do the Sevii Islands bit. So I guess it is necessary to catch 60 pokemon before hitting the islands. What pokemon would be used? Tilus' run used a Squirtle, and with no wild pokemon glitches in these games, that would probably be the best choice. I can see this run as being maybe 10 minutes slower than Tilus' run (because of attacks that can't miss, and the consequential pokemon center visits) to beat the Elite Four, and maybe a half hour for catching 50-60 pokemon, and then an hour to beat the Elite Four again. That's a long run.

I got a useless E-mail from Nintendo about the RNG - "yada, yada, yada, our website has some good tips, blah blah blah, but some things should remain mysteries, fuh fuh fuh". Still no response from Pokemon.com
