The site doesn't accept any more entries for Mario hacks, but we can use this thread to post various WIPs of various Mario hacks. Be sure to post the name of the hack with your WIP! I'll have a hack movie up fairly soon, it's a work in progress. I think there might be some hacks of Mario which the current WIP for beating the real game will work. Games that only change graphics might be interesting to see being beat really fast.

I figured something out. Mario has the 21-frame rule, right? This game has a 60-frame rule. In both games, it comes from rounding down to the next unit of time. In Mario, the units are about a third of a second, but in this, they are 1 second, leaving the margin of error fairly wide open. I guess I don't have to worry about a couple points that are a frame or two away from optimization.

Well, if we were to really play at highest difficulty, then we would catch a Magikarp ASAP and beat the game with that. There are limits to hardest difficulty.

Well, walking all the time is much slower. However, because the menu takes a short time to get up, it might be slightly faster to walk for some short distances. This requires a little testing.

Why not, instead of the h4xx0r wand, just have some massive powerup way out of the way (I.E, speed X 2) that is just baaaarely worth getting in a TAS? That would be cool.

I found the screenie funny because of the way they should lose so badly, but they win. I think it would have been oddly appropriate for this to be movie #800. Then we would have a vid of every pokemon game by that milestone, but no, it's #801. Great job.

Actually, I think a good run could be made set to Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. It synchs pretty well with The Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter 4, Bedazzled, Godzilla, etc. It has some weird property that makes it synch well with almost anything. Anyone have any ideas for what game to do to set to this album? Also, remember that TASvideos "trailer", God Playing? Maybe some of those songs could work. But I still think the Pink Floyd thing is best.

I've heard of a teleport glitch that sends you to hall of fame in Red/Blue. Basically, make it to Cerulean without ever healing at pokemon centres. This involves buying a lot of potions, getting every TM, and stocking antidotes. Once in Cerulean, beat Nugget Bridge (Again without healing). You can beat Cerulean Gym, as well, a good idea on hard copy for Bubblebeam. Catch an Abra after Nugget Bridge, then use Teleport. Allegedly, you teleport to the Hall of Fame. I've tried it on hard copy, but I've never made it past Nugget Bridge without dieing or running out of PP (and once, I ran out of battery power).

Apparently doing a charge jump is best, according to Qlex, provided you hit back then forward before landing. This kills his speed and somehow results in him not slowing down later.

LOL, I've always thought how awesome it would be in MI3 if there was a massive explosion when the message self-destructs, killing him instantly. On topic: I think it is a good idea to get power ups. I forget why, but I know the current TAS gets them.

Here's some move planning for the elite four: Lorelei: Crit. bonemerang against Dewgong. Then Thrash. Bruno: Bonemerang for first Onix, then Ice Beam everything. Agatha: Bonemerang first Gengar, 3 ice beams, then bonemerang last gengar. Lance: Thrash first 3 pokemon, then Ice Beam for last 2. Rival: Use last Ice beam for Pidgeot, Bonemerang for Alakazam, Bonemerang for Rhydon, Thrash last 3 pokemon. Hmmm, that's 6 uses of Bonemerang, 10 of Ice Beam, and 3 of Thrash. How many other battles are there? Celadon Gym - 2 trainers - Thrash takes both, that's 5 (I'm sorta retroapplying this here) Cinnabar Gym - 1 trainer (Note: The questions are so ramblingly long, it might save time to whup some 1-pokemon trainers rather than answer questions) - Assuming only Blaine, 1 thrash, 6. Saffron Gym - 1 trainer - 1 thrash kills all, 7 Silph. Co. - 3 trainers - Thrash can take them all. Note that Giovanni has an intimidating Rhyhorn, but it can be eliminated with critical Thrash. 10 uses total. Viridian Gym - 3 trainers - The Cooltrainer should be Bonemeranged, but the karate king can be Thrashed. As for Giovanni, I honestly can't remember if you can OHKO his Rhydon with a critical Thrash. If you can, bonemerang to Rhyhorn at first then Thrash at the end. If you can't, thrashing starts right away and Rhydon dies by Bonemerang. 8 bonemerangs and 12 Thrash. Rival: 2 thrashes. So in the end it seems Marowak will use Ice Beam 10 times, Bonemerang 8 times, and thrash 14 times. Rage is unnecessary, because there's no problem with Thrash PP. The only time the non-optimal move will be used is for Bonemerang against Bruno's first Onix. Using this instead of Ice Beam will cost maybe 15 frames. No problem.

Hell, I've caught Marowak with Poke Balls on my Gameboy. I know it's no problem.

Okay, here's a weird idea: Many people warn that turning off while saving can mess up the save file. So, save ASAP and use the A+B+select+start reset while it says "saving... DON'T TURN OFF THE POWER". If we reset at the right moment, it might result in teleporting to the Hall of Fame, or getting a level 100 marowak, etc... Anyway, say it doesn't work. Ho hum. I've been doing some tests with Marowak. Thrash is so effective that he can beat Celadon Gym, Cinnabar Gym, Saffron Gym, the Silph Building, Rival, Rival, Elite Four, and Rival, without having to heal at Pokemon centers. Every pokemon up to the Elite Four can be beaten with Thrash without a critical hit, and with Marowak going first, except: Sabrina's Alakazam (Goes second) Rival's Alakazam (Goes second) and a couple Rhyhorns (Bonemerang or Ice Beam). I've e-mailed Nintendo and Pokemon.com with this letter: As you might know, there are several people at tasvideos.org trying to use computer programs to play the Pokemon red/blue games as fast as possible. Our best movie so far can be seen at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-2812912828267940831&q=pokemon+red+speedrun These movies are made by extensively planning the route, and then one person starts to work on playing, with every button pressed at the first possible moment and random button presses used for extreme good luck, allowing no pokemon to be seen except when necessary and all attacks to do maximum damage. The process involves pressing random buttons, retrying over and over until the desired result is achieved. If you could e-mail me the random number generators used in pokemon Red and how they are applied, it would be extremely helpful. Please and thank you, Alex Lamoureux.

Figure out what the fastest pokemon is that knows a 1HKO move, then rent it and 5 pokemon right by it. Then, for all battles, manipulate to fight the slowest opponents from the enemy's team, then manipulate for 3 straight 1HKOs. Hmmm... that might get a little lame... I imagine one battle could last 1 minute, but a 100% run constitutes over 100 battles. And it would be nothing but constant 1HKOs. So it would be very boring, both to make and watch. Here's an idea: Start from a savestate, where all opponents have been beaten except the Elite Four from Gym Leader Castle, the hardest level on the level 100 cup, and with very hard mode unlocked on the minigames. Kill the level 100 cup, then win at every minigame (Note: With the longest mode of game, it is possible to win by winning every game once). The minigames would be utter insanity. Magikarp splash: Duh. Hit A at the first moment possible and hold long enough to hit the button. Clefairy says: Wait for a long time, then hit every button at the last moment. Maybe manipulate so each CPU gets only one mistake, and all on the last round. Running rattata: Tap A at 30 hertz, and jump whenever for the jumps. Again, manipulate for fast opponents, but barely too slow. Snore war: Manipulate for sucky opponents who lose almost immediately. Power plant: Hitting buttons at max speed to win almost instantly. Sushi-go-round: Manipulate to get massive comboes of the 1000-point food. Ekans' hoop hurl: Get. Every. Target. Rock harden: Manipulate for crap opponents. Digdigdig: KILL!! 30 hertz pwnz a11 Then kill the Elite Four with yet more Fissure/Horn Drill/Guillotine.

I don't know. How many people understood my various references to "It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue." It's from the game Zork, a text-only game. Also, the creators used the number 69,105 a lot in their games. Interestingly, 69 in hex is 105 in decimal, and 69 in decimal is 105 in octal. But really, we need to get back on topic.

8307 rerecords seems auspiciously low for a Pokemon run... In fact, it would be a little low for some side-scrollers. Are you sure you don't mean something like 83070? It seems to me like anything with a lot of luck-manipulation would take a lot of rerecords to get through. Or maybe you're just very efficient. In any case, congrats! I was almost sure this would be over 2 hours. I'm quite surprised it's even faster than the first Pokemon Blue run that was put on this site. Do you think any improvements can be made (not just little tweaks, but fairly large route changes)?

Having watched Rikku's new Super Mario 64 run... about 5 times... I'd like to see a perfect run of this. There are so many weird glitches and whatnot I don't know if we'll ever get it just right. I mean, everyone must have thought the old one was optimized, then it got beaten by a few seconds. I think someday we might somehow clear 15 minutes through some weird glitch. Probably related to seaming somehow, but who knows...

Sweet... It's legal! @ Deep Loner: 1000 people are arrested or sued for downloading music or ROMs in the US, each year. Coconut deaths are surprisingly rare, contrary to popular belief. Only 1-5 a year. If every state has a state lottery once a week, then that's 2600 jackpot winners. 400 people are struck by lightning in the US each year. A quarter die. You are likely to be eaten by a grue, provided A) It is pitch black B) There are no graphics, only text. When these conditions are met, you have a 99.69105% chance of being eaten by a grue.

Bag of Magic Food, please fix the thing in all your posts that says "Invalid Session. Please resubmit the form". Anyway, I think fastest time to achieve 1,000,000 or 999,950 would be best. Otherwise, we would have a 2-hour run that ends with 9,999,950. Route planning would be a tangible thing, because we have to figure out what the fastest time would be to add a certain amount of points would be. For example, stopping to hit the turtle in 3-2 would add about 30,000 points and cost only a second or two. I'm going for it. I'm gonna make a TAS, no turtle stair, 1 life, end with 999.950 points.

Actually, I think the Gradius TASes are pretty interesting, not just the bosses. Sidescrollers make for good TASes, because of all the crazy tricks.

I've caught all 150 pokemon in Pokemon Blue. I can tell you that it looks pretty lame. It has a picture of you and it says something like "congratulations". Lame.

"Levels 1, 2 and 5 are not that interesting, but level 3 has not one but three very nice shortcuts. Definitely the best part of the run." Admittedly, 1, 2 and 5 don't involve any turning around at all, so these aren't too entertaining. There are actually 4 shortcuts in level 3: 1. First chimney 2. Second chimney 3. Bouncing off the toy soldier to get onto a balcony 4. Jumping off the mousetrap to hit the exit. "The stairs in level 4 and 10 look slow. I can't help thinking that some jumps when going up on the platforms also look slower than they need to be. Even though they are probably done as fast as possible, it still looks slow." Yes, the game mechanics are screwy. It's annoying, but those jumps are actually frame optimized. "Level 7 has one questionable jump at the guillotines (or whatever they are)." The saw blades were one of the most distinctive things in the TAS that seperate it from an unassisted run. All the jumps were frame optimized, with no margin of error for more than one of the jumps. "In Level 8 you fall rather than jump into the water, but perhaps it doesn't make any difference" No difference, because of the way the hole goes straight down for a while.
