I was also strongly in favor of publishing the Solomon's Key II (Fire 'n Ice) run, and that one got canceled. This one's more exciting than that one. It's fun to see puzzles with a 3 minute time limit get solved in barely over a second.

Feel free to make an encode for your own purposes if you want to, but I'm making one too. :) At least, one for Youtube.

Microstorage.php is just a storage site. You still need to post the download link to the input file. (We don't actually monitor what's uploaded there.)

That might have been because this is the first Windows submission, and something went wrong while updating the site to include that as a category. Cave Story, made by Pixel in 2004, is a famous freeware indie game notable for being made entirely by one person. Watch as nitsuja completely destroys this difficult game with amazingly precise movement. This playthrough saves Curly and finishes with the best ending after beating Ballos. The program used to make this run, Hourglass, was also developed by him—with the creation of this run in mind. As such, it is our first published run of a Windows game. The encodes also contain commentary subtitles by the author in case you want to read along.

I guess you figured out that the font should be "MS Gothic", and found a way to set it to that? (Just checking that we came to the same conclusion. I think I'll make future versions of Hourglass automatically use that as the default/system font when the locale being simulated is set to Japanese.)
I believe you mean MS ゴシック ;) And yeah, I was able to set it by changing the system language to Japanese which also changes the default encoding type for applications that don't use the Unicode APIs. (I think to Shift-JIS.) edit: looks like publication will be delayed a little, we're having some problems getting the file to mux properly, causing glitches in VLC Player.

My dump just barely has a split (2.3GB for the raw dump), but I went and checked and found no evidence of dropped frames, thankfully. Oh, and the regular encode (non Youtube) will have the correct font. I would have fixed the Youtube encode too, but since so many sites were already linking to it I figured it might be better to keep it the way it is. Thanks for the final version of the comments, I'm going to implement them. We'll probably be ready for publication tonight.

Yeah, it's unfortunate but a lot of TAS tools, in fact pretty much all of them, are made for Windows. That's the way it is. I'm a Mac user too, and although I only do encoding it's very useful to have a VM around.

Open question for whomever wants to answer it: is Turska's yuv444 encode usable for publication? As I recall this would be our first encode using this colorspace. Personally I don't know how well it's supported. If we can use his encode, I'll stop working on mine. Then we just need the 512kb encode for the Internet Archive, so I can just start working on that one instead.

Nota bene: since nobody seems to be working on an SD encode, I'll make it. Please let me know if I'm wrong. edit: basic encode is nearly done. After that 512kb. [88.9%] 125359/141088 frames, 4.11 fps, 1469.73 kb/s, eta 1:03:48 edit: wasn't entirely happy with the file size so I've lowered the quality and added some more expensive settings. redoing it now.

Very nice! I just added that to the video and it seems to work really great. I did need to change one thing, though, the second subtitle (where you mention having to jump constantly) was merged with the one after that, and the timings changed slightly, otherwise they would have gotten in the way of the hardsubbed TASVideos disclaimer. Let me know if you finish it. When I added Pirohiko's commentary for his FF3j run I got a lot of positive feedback, so I'm sure a lot of people will appreciate this. (It would be particularly nice if someone could translate it to Japanese, given the amount of interest they have in this game too.)

We've been through this. The language he chose is fine. The arguments are very clear here, and we've got a good enough historical precedent. This should not be considered an issue.

Do we even know on which versions this glitch can be used? Maybe it can only be used on the earliest Japanese version, SLPS-02000~3.

We're using SLUS-01251, which is before Greatest Hits. It's the earliest US release. I don't actually know if the glitch works or not on this version.

Wait, I think I know what you meant that the video now has "proper subtitles"; you meant the informational text about the run itself, not a translation of the speech and info dialogs.
Oh, I actually realized that right after I posted my reply. I was going to edit my post, but I apparently forgot. Yes, the run now has the proper subtitles. The other one I uploaded that didn't have them has been set to unlisted. Some sites might still link to that old one, so make sure to check that if you can't see them (they show up during the first scene, and in First Cave). edit: who's working on the regular encode? At this time I don't think anyone is. I'm pretty busy with work but if nobody's going to pick this up, I'll do the regular encode this weekend.

I'm not the judge, so my opinion doesn't really count in this matter, but I'd be more inclined to give it a "best ending" tag if I had ever seen a speedrun that doesn't go through Sacred Grounds at the end. I've literally never seen one, nor heard of anyone doing one. It would make more sense to have this, and an "easy ending" run, if it ever becomes necessary. (I doubt anyone will ever make a TAS that doesn't go through Sacred Grounds, though.)

Two questions: right before you hitchhike a lift on that flying creature (before Sue gets beat up by Igor), would it be possible to manipulate it so that the creature flies a bit lower, allowing you to move even further into the level? Also: in Hell, after the first boss, if you allow yourself to get hit (and invulnerable), you can clip through the hole in the ground (the part of the ground that's about to collapse), before the big block falls through. I suppose there's no enemy around to get the invulnerability from? edit: that's a lot of rerecords by the way :) 269327 in total.
