That's incredible. There's even an unofficial OSX build. Will have to give it a try as soon as I have a good amount of spare time. It's also really nice that he simply released all the source code under a free license.

It's so nice to see this is still being worked on. If I'm not mistaken it's only FFII and FFVII that still need to get a TAS on this site (out of the numbered ones).

I agree. It would be nice if we could at least act somewhat like grownups from time to time, like when someone with a disability asks a question related to their disability. People who have disabilities get enough of this kind of nonsense (as well as people who think they can "help", by "training the weak leg"). It's really just not funny, not helpful, and it's extremely immature.

Thanks, guys! You're words Truly mean alot to me! I have Already spent some Time researching ocarina of time and I came across a good TAS for Reference by Guanobowl. What kind of Tools and Hardware do I need to start TASing though? Thanks in Advance.
For the N64, you'll need mupen64-rr. No special hardware is needed, just a regular computer with Windows on it. I think this is the download you need: https://code.google.com/p/mupen64-rr/downloads/detail?name=Mupen64%20v8%20installer.zip&can=2&q=

Not to my knowledge, but if all you want is the Excalibur II without it having to be a speedrun or a legit playthrough, you could always just use a cheat code: http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps/197338-final-fantasy-ix/answers?qid=13501 (these are NTSC codes but if you google I'm sure you can find the PAL ones)

Is it just me, or is this movie different from the old one in that there's no reverb? MGS has pretty heavy reverb on a console, and the SPU settings from the old encode are more accurate I believe.

I'll give the encoding process a try as well. Ilari mentioned to me this one keeps failing at the Youtube processing stage.

Haven't been around for a while, but I'm glad the new run is done. I'm presuming this still uses PCSX: don't know if any of the encoders are still interested in working on it, but I can pick this up otherwise.

What's dumb is to hold silly grudges long after someone left the site. It seems to me that if the judges say there's reason to believe that the save state is legit, we can omit the requirement for a verification movie. But it would be nice to then use this opportunity to modify the rules to reflect this. Still, I'd recommend adding that people who want to omit a verification movie need to ask a judge if they can do so first.

Really hope you can find a way into the elevator. If the Hind fight can somehow be skipped, the resulting movie will be pretty astonishing. What about using two C4 explosives btw, waiting a bit to detonate the second one (until after Snake's vulnerable again), I don't think I've seen you try that?

Well, I have to admit I've been a little inactive for a number of reasons, but I'd be surprised if this glitch is somehow unacceptable. It seems to me that it isn't too different from the Chrono Trigger save/reset glitch. Maybe there's something I'm missing?

Thanks, this at least makes it possible for me to write and read those addresses. The cheat code doesn't work though. Weird! Maybe I'm not using the correct one.

Hi there. I was trying to get a Gameshark code working in psxjin in order to test some Metal Gear Solid "walk through walls" tricks. The gameshark code to enable walk through walls is:
80027250 9CC4
80027252 0800
However, I can't seem to be able to make this work. When I write a lua script to set the addresses, they don't work (a memory.readbyte returns 0, and seems to be broken with both writedword as well as writeword). When trying to use RAM Watch to watch for 80027250, it says "invalid address". I'm really new to this, maybe someone can tell me how to do this?

If you loaded a game from memory card, would that too get some glitchy effects from the Emerald Weapon kill? If so, wouldn't that potentially make this a speed run strategy?
Yep, the loaded game would be glitched. Only a hard reset can save you.
So saving just before Emerald Weapon and then performing this glitch would be the best idea for a TAS?

The very first one, really: Morimoto's SMB3 run. I guess aside from that one, NES Mega Man (JPN) in 16:57.93 by Bisqwit was a big milestone in my mind.

Well, technically you've been TASing all along if you've been using save states. :) I was thinking that perhaps using frame advance to play through certain key sequences very slowly might help, but the probability of finding something is admittedly low. Had some problems getting psxjin to work earlier (complaining about not being able to find dbgeng.dll, for some reason) but as soon as I'm able to I'll give the ammo thing a try, although it's a loooong shot. :)

This is just a thought, perhaps I'm mistaken, but you've been trying out all these things in real-time. Maybe there's the potential to find out more by using TAS tools to do the glitch searching. Possibly there are ways to OOB yourself out of the Comm Tower with extreme, frame-precise accuracy. Maybe it's somehow possible to get the Stinger to -1/0 ammo (by firing another weapon and switching to it with frame precise accuracy), in order to "activate" it, in case the game checks whether the current ammo equals 0. edit:

This area is the Darpa Chief cell. It is possible with walk through walls to activate the torture cutscene and save approximately 30 minutes on a speedrun. Actually getting OoB here is another matter.
Funny, I remember once telling theenglishman that you can do a massive sequence break there by walking through the wall, but of course since in my mind the only way to walk through walls was by using a Gameshark code I dismissed the idea. I never checked whether the game actually stays consistent enough to beat. Could you possibly use this for a "new game+" run using the Bandana for infinite ammo? edit: It's unlikely that this is a cheating protection, in my mind. The guns get more ammo the higher your "level" is, right? They probably just didn't add a number to the array containing the amount of ammo you can carry for the low levels, or (more likely) kept it at zero.

What happens if the PSG-1 is used after Meryl gets shot, but you don't leave? Can it be used? What happens if you OoB during that?
I'm just guessing but I think that if you have the PSG-1 at the moment that Meryl is lying on the floor bleeding, you can use it to beat Wolf, and after you beat her Meryl will disappear without a trace, as if you actually did exit the room and collected the weapon. That seems to make the most sense to me as far as game logic goes. If you OoB during the Wolf fight, I doubt anything will happen if you run up to the door. They probably did not add the door event in that level.

It's always unfortunate when someone puts a lot of time into making a TAS, for it to ultimately end up being rejected. I'm sorry about this decision, and I hope it won't deject you from making more runs in the future.

Yeah I edited it. I meant a Perfect Game according to gamefaqs standard.
Looks quite daunting, but interesting. The good thing is you already have a lot of planning ready to use. I'm sure you'll be able to improve on the FAQ's methods. He uses the Cotton Robe trick, for example, and you might be able to get money easier.

Before I launch myself in this gigantic project... Would there be an audience for a 100% of this game ?
Judging by the view counts on Youtube, the FFIX run was significantly less popular than the FFVIII run, among regular online viewers. Still, there was quite a lot of interest for the run on this community and I think a lot of people followed your progress and watched the WIPs. I guess it also depends on what you mean by 100%. What exactly would define a 100% run? For example, would you need to learn all skills? Open all treasure chests? Get the Excalibur II? (I guess that one will have to be foregone.) In any case, I think if you're going to start a major project like this, you should do it primarily for yourself, because you want to do it. :)

I'm particularly a fan of judo. Loved watching the games, too bad the judo matches are already over.

I haven't bought a console in quite a while. I've played some PS2 games but pretty quickly let my sister have it. The only console I really still play is the PSX (and I've got a ton of games for it, and I actually haven't even played all of the ones I have). That reminds me I need to perform that AV hack on my Famicom to be able to connect it via standard composite cable. And then I'll need something that can properly capture and send that signal to my computer. Right now I have an external TV capture card that only works with PAL signals... I mostly just play PSX games and computer games.
