Yeah, you're totally right. I think it's particularly hard to swallow that the authors of proprietary emulators just aren't contributing back to the community (notable exceptions notwithstanding, of course). They've read the community-contributed docs and technical specs, haven't they? Especially when your emulator is quite old and isn't actively being maintained anymore.

I think it would be really great to have a video of this regardless if it's faster, just for curiosity value. :) Glad to see you making progress, by the way. This is one of the games I really want to see done!

I made a TAS of PaRappa the Rapper because I wanted to have a video with all of its songs played like they were supposed to be played. This is not so easy to make in real time. Also, the story is funny + the characters are cute + I had never played the game since I was ~13 (most of us are here because of the nostalgia :P).
I agree wholeheartedly. It's a really cool game and it would be nice to have a video around that shows how the songs are supposed to sound.

I've found one place so far in Paramonia where walking through walls saves time.
Woah, can you upload a video of you doing that? I've never heard of anyone accidentally walking through a wall in this game! How'd you do it?

Man, I'm really glad this game's being done. This is one of my favorites. Keep it up!

If you want to do some reading up on libc, try here: http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/ http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/libc6 - the libc6 package http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/libc6-dev - the libc6-dev package

Yeah, Bisqwit is right. libc-dev needs to be on your system and GCC must be able to find it. If you're on a system with a package manager, that's really easy, though the package might have a nonstandard name. It might be called libc6-dev.

It's been a long time since I did anything TAS-related, but I'd just like to give my congrats for releasing these improvements. FCEU is a really neat emulator, and I'm glad it's still being developed despite the fact it already works really well.

Basically, I'd download all the TAS videos on the site, convert them to a PSP movie format, then send them off somewhere to have them hosted for download.
The Internet Archive could host them. It offers unlimited space, as long as you don't infringe on anyone's copyright. (However, it doesn't consider speedrun movies copyright infringement, as it has a section dedicated to it.)

Has anybody figured out how swapping discs would be handled?
As with the above concern, it doesn't really matter. The emulator is supposed to keep these "outside influences" away from contaminating the game's environment. If you can insert a new disk in 1 frame, the emulator shouldn't care. And if you pause the emulator, you will be able to swap the disk in 1 frame, no matter if it actually takes you a minute to find the right disk.

7) In my experience the advantage of being able to run homebreed software is dubious. I did try the TGA exploit in order to run a SNES emulator, so I could play emulated SNES games with my PSP. The problem: The CPU of the PSP is not fast enough to run a SNES emulator at a good framerate. Playing is irritating at 5 FPS and less. I ended up removing the exploit and the emulator because they were basically useless. I prefer not risking the integrity of my PSP, which is not a cheap device.
I'm not playing any SNES games on my PSP at this moment (there aren't any that I'm interested in playing right now), but I think that this is highly game-specific. I think Kirby Super Star is one example of games that are ridiculously slow. Others seem to work just fine. I've been playing Kirby & the Amazing Mirror on a GBA emulator on my PSP, for example, which was easily able to emulate it at 60 FPS without ever slowing down. I'll agree that modding the PSP is risky, but I'm glad I did it.

What you yourself could also do is provide lossless x264 encodes to those who want the extra quality. It's quite nice, and the only thing that separates it from "true" lossless video is the colorspace (but this is entirely a non-issue) and the chroma subsampling. When I heard they were going to take part in Google Summer of Code, I suggested to them that they should use this opportunity to implement 4:4:4 and 4:2:2 support. If you're interested, go have a look.

It's not a question of version. It's a question of whether x264 support has been compiled into mencoder or not. By default it's not compiled (if you just get the basic mencoder source); you need to download the ffmpeg (or whatever it was) package separately in order to compile mencoder with that support.
Yeah, what I did was I first got x264, then I got LAME, and then I compiled MEncoder. I'm pretty sure I did those things right. Encoding is harder than I thought it would be. I guess I'll be trying to figure stuff out using that manual, thanks for the link. Or if anyone has some kind of starting point for me to mess around with (like, a script that you use or would fit my needs), that would be great.

Well, I'm not entirely sure. -x264encopts seems to be a valid Mplayer option, according to Google, but I'm thinking that most of the incompatibility is due to this script being pretty old. Some of the arguments have likely been replaced by others. Maybe you have some good resource where I can see the arguments that I can pass to x264?

Hi there. I was wondering if some of the encoding wizkids on this site could help me out a little. A long time ago, I think somewhere mid-2006, Bisqwit sent me a script he used for encoding. I messed around with it a little and had a good single-command encoder that way. The script is here. However, it doesn't work anymore. I think it's because x264 changed so much that some of the old arguments don't work anymore. Here's what happens when I run the script (note: I already have a tempfile.mp3 by then). So, can anyone give me some pointers on what to do? Basically, the point of the script is to make tempfile.mp3 when it isn't available (it does this perfectly), then to do a two-pass encode with x264, integrating the mp3 file. (I want to be able to make MKV files but I've been told it's best to first encode an AVI and then put it into a new container.)

I've never really liked using a gamepad for anything other than console gaming. In fact, if given the choice, I probably would prefer the keyboard for that as well. There are two games for which I can legitimately say I'm pretty good at them: Rockman and Street Fighter Alpha 3. I'm no longer playing them, but when I did, I used a keyboard. I played a pretty mean V-ism Akuma, too...

There isn't, unfortunately. The WMV files aren't particularly better than the YouTube versions. They're a little better, I guess, but not much.

ノーセーブノーダメージBIG BOSSプレイ。メタルギア2を極めたプレイです。VAMP戦がメチャクチャ笑えますよ。(^o^) Metal Gear Solid 2 beaten on "Extreme" difficulty in under 2 hours. This is one of the best speedruns ever made and shows amazing skill by the player, Takeshi. It was originally lifted from わいわい芸夢館 <http://homepage3.nifty.com/shin3/>, a Japanese speedrun site. Some interesting facts about this run: extreme difficulty, no damage, no saving, no killing, no radar. Hi whatelse, Do you actually have a video file of this happening? It might be incredibly difficult to reproduce the glitch. Unless it's reproducible, it won't be of much help. Maybe you already beat the boss before (or someone else did with your save state). In that case, X would simply beam out when reaching the boss location instead of fighting the boss again.

Here's a little plug. I've been member at a site called Gaming World for a long time (I'm Dada there). It's probably the biggest site concerning free RPGs like that one. The main site is currently down, so you'll have to dig around on the forum to find more games to play (this is a good starting point).

Nice work! I'm downloading the video right now. I didn't think you'd be able to find a way to do it without any star! But I must say again that I don't agree with the 16-star TAS being completely obsolete as a result of the 1-star run. There's an equivalent unassisted speedrun, after all.

I don't think that this should obsolete the 16-star run completely. Some games have more than the classic completion tiers (any%, minimalist), and so should this one. I think that it'd still be very interesting to watch a fully optimized 16-star run, despite a 1-star run being possible. Extremely nice run!
