Is RTA the term that's used for unassisted speedruns over there?

It made sense for Chrono trigger glitchy to obsolete the old chrono trigger run, because by its goals, the old run would have used them if they had been known at the time of its creation.
This is the first time I've heard of that argument. But that's a particularly draconian way of doing things because "regular" runs pretty much become low-glitch runs when extremely severe game-breaking bugs are discovered. You're basically dumping perfectly good runs on the basis of a technicality. Again, the only time we've ever done this (that I know of, anyway) was with Chrono Trigger, and that was because the run was old and found to be lacking. And even then a lot of people complained. Myself included. TASVideos has always been far too puritanical with this sort of thing, throwing perfectly good runs out for want of some vague arbitrary definition of a category.

Also, what would happen if we ever manage to finish the game early without going to the debug menu? Then it would make the most sense to have it obsolete the 70 minute TAS, wouldn't it?
I don't think it would, because the only time that ever happened was with Chrono Trigger. And that was because of how old the original run was. I disagreed with that decision (as did many others), in part because of the confusion that arose from it. But aside from that one case there have always been multiple categories for "regular" playthroughs and those that skip vast portions of the game.

Thanks for the encode. This is completely unrelated, but maybe you should stop replying to people who complain about your logo. When you reply, this puts their comment at the top of the list under "Uploader Comments" meaning everybody gets to read them first.

I'd have to know more about this. I've done some speedrunning in the past (Mega Man and Mega Man II) and I'm an encoder but I haven't been convinced that this is something I should be interested in. By the way, did you try posting on SDA? http://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/

Chrono Trigger's any% being obsoleted by the glitched run was because the any% was extremely out-of-date, which is clearly not the case with SMW. (Except for maybe the 96-exit run, but that's not relevant here.)
I was still against it because this makes it a bit less enticing to go and create a new, non-glitched version. The old run should have stayed up so that someone could obsolete it properly, with a new version that plays by the old rules. The very reason we're talking about this right now is also because obsoleting that run gave people the impression that heavily glitched runs like this one can obsolete more regular playthroughs at all.

Glad to see that you're back. And I'm glad you're thorough enough to actually go back and redo parts of the movie when it's necessary. :)

As time passed, Ross Miller (Sprocket2005) posted a 4 minute run using the same route, but without a Skip sandwich. So he could skip all of the night part in Onett and go to the glitch spot while Ness was still in his pajama. The run is considered fake because neither pirohiko nor me could bypass the cliff without a skip sandwich and looking at the video frames of sprocket2005's video, Ness walks literally through the cliff diagonally which is impossible since any diagonal movement is stopped when walking against a solid wall whereas walking vertically or horizontally may eject Ness and let him move on sometimes. It's also considered fake because the author never provided an SMV (instead he blocked me on YT), and is known to have created fake runs in the past.
Ah, so that solves the mystery. I had been wondering about this since I remember seeing the same video, but it took ages for an optimized version to be released here. Very strange that someone would make a fake run. Yes vote from me, of course. The run is insane. Since I haven't played Earthbound myself, could someone tell me how exactly the music is glitched in the earlier version? I'm guessing that it loads the wrong instruments? I might rip it to MP3 since it sounds really interesting.

Why does the time in the title include the credits? And should it?
You still need to walk around a little bit at the end before the game is really over, so unfortunately all that waiting time has to be counted too.

New encode: Link to video It's uploading right now, so it'll appear here in a while. It shouldn't take long to upload, but it might take a while to process.

Maybe you could post the latest WIP before you leave on vacation so we can make one last encode starting from the end of antd's encode.

Happy Hannukah to all the Jewish members of the forum and elsewhere. Hope someday people will know at least the basics about other cultures: http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lwjpultUiW1qjwx97o1_500.png

Seems the movie file was replaced, so I'll go and make another HD encode later today.

Minor note: encode linked in the submission is still processing so it'll probably be up about an hour or so from now. (Great big YES vote from me) edit: 360p version is up. edit: Youtube has an audio drift problem, so I'm replacing it. The new one will take a little while to go up, but it's already linked to in the submission.

I've had a few content violations, but I've always immediately deleted the videos (because I didn't really need them anyway, I'm using my account exclusively for video game things). I'm really glad to have an unmetered account. I actually have another unmetered account hanging around. Maybe I should register a bunch of accounts and upload random things to it, then when its limit is removed put those recordings to "unlisted"...

Looks interesting. I'll read this in a little bit. Reading the topic title reminded me of something I thought of a little while ago, that the Windows 95 explorer (particularly with the toolbar and explorer sidebar enabled) looks very similar to the modern Mac OS X Finder. It's funny considering how bloated the Windows explorer has become over the years (particularly since Windows 98).

As a side-note: I uploaded this video in 4240x2400 resolution. The highest YouTube currently provides is 480p. On "my videos" it says "Published 0%". On the upload form it says "your video will be live in a moment" and "Processing 99% — Finishing processing...". Anyone know whether I can expect the 720p/1080p/Original versions to appear, like ever?
Unfortunately, it's extremely random. In some cases they never show up, although I've only experienced that with videos that were several hours long. You could consider reducing the size a bit, since 4240x2400 is well beyond the native resolution of the vast majority of monitors. edit: I see that I'm late.

I'll give it a try as soon as I get back from work, maybe we'll need to get the emulator programmers involved... By the way, I'm surprised you need to use save states to switch discs. That wasn't needed for FF8. Might be a good idea to check that too.

The author of Cave Story briefly responded to this run on Twitter.

Link to video The Numa Numa song (Dragostea Din Tei) as reinterpreted by Japanese speakers, and animated by 2ch. Featuring the Nomaneko (のまネコ). Apparently this was a huge meme. A number of other versions exist too.

Of course that's not what they mean at all. Instead, what they mean is, roughly, "don't believe something without proper evidence." (Of course it then comes down to what is "proper evidence", but that's another lengthy story in itself.)
The reason why I say that the term "skeptic" means very little is partly because, like you say, people can use it to mean anything. Even if you rightly call yourself a skeptic by the proper definition, it doesn't prove anything about what you're saying. You could still be completely wrong about whatever the subject is. So unless you're writing a paper on philosophical movements or the scientific method, it's really just a fancy label that people apply to themselves because it makes them feel better, and shouldn't come up in regular discourse.
