Sorry I never got back to you Ahkeon. Anyway, the best comparison here would be "Biker Mice from Mars" where a password is used to skip to the long, arduous, non-fun parts. It appears that BMFM is NOT published as a demo. Thus, this run should be treated similarly. Everyone: This should be treated as a serious submission, and unrelated to MLP. 2nd Edit: I'd appreciate whoever encodes this encode both the submission, and the full movie Ahkeon links to.

I must be getting old. I just don't see the appeal. I do have to agree that the animation is amazingly colorful and well done. However, nothing in the first three episodes stood out to me and said "THIS IS AMAZING, AND BEYOND A NORMAL KIDS SHOW!" It just felt like... well, the simpsons did it.

SoulCal, the only reason to check for lag frames would be to improve emulator accuracy. Some games may sync perfectly, even with an extra lag frame here or there.

That information about the controller line is pretty interesting, as it means you could measure lag with a multimeter or modified controller (NESbot-style). Thus, you might not even have to get the emulator to calculate lag for you, if you can measure it from the console itself.
Uh, yeah, you could technically check for lag using the NESbot. It would be interesting to record the 'time' between pulses, which could tell you exactly when PCM errors occur, and the like. But it really isn't necessary at this point in time.

No vote, this is 28:13 longer than Barney's Hide n' Seek, which was also a multigame run. :) Kid games make for very boring runs, in all seriousness.

Clearly, my 2 suggestions are well on their way to winning, with zero votes each. I don't really know why I held this poll, since clearly I could have picked the best game for the contest on my own...

I'm hijacking the Awards section of the board, so that we can have approval voting instead of single votes. Also, after struggling to pick 4 games, I decided to include a 5th. Rockin' Kats - This would be a first for DTC 4, a game with an already published movie. There is a ton of depth to this game that has not been explored, and would make for a difficult DTC4. Suggestion by adelikat. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - While a straight forward platformer, this game has glitches, sequence break(s), and the ability to be a colorful and interesting movie. Estimated TAS length: 25-30m. Suggestion by AKheon. Captain Commando, 4 player - A first for DTC4! A multiplayer game, and 4 at that! I will provide a multi-track script for people to use, if this wins. Teams are expected to use each of the 4 characters, regardless of strengths. Estimated length: 15-20 minutes Sorcerer's Maze - A breakout clone with boss battles, powerups, and a balancing act. MP can be gained to buy powerups for each level. While my test TAS was very long, it was very poorly optimized. With optimization, MP maxing, and proper powerup buying, this movie could be very entertaining. Estimated TAS Length: 30-40m. Suggestion aided by FatRatKnight Chronos Twin - A bizzare multitime game, with lots of room for optimization. Estimated TAS length: 25 minutes. Suggestion by Atma Some rejected games: Cannon Fodder - This would have been a great game, but it is reallllly long. I finished the first 20% in about 30 minutes. This would not have been feasible in the time allowed Syndicate - You can do 4 player SNES action, but it is once again, just too long to get done. Knight's Quest - This would have been a fun game, but it is far too simplistic. Most of the resulting movies would have ended up far too similar. Mega Man PC - This would have been fun, but JPC-rr's learning curve is just too large for this competition. I'll post more as I remember them. I won't post ones that may be good for future competitions.

Well, if the main joy of the game lies in assassination, that means you're wasting 3 hours on padding.
Yeah, there were only a handful of actual 'sneak up and assassinate character X', (in the main story line) and each was surrounded by 2-3 hours of filler. I guess I just hoped that a game named "Assassin's Creed" would be more about... you know, assassinating people, and not listening to leonardo davinici babble for hours on end. Also, unskippable cutscenes? In this day and age? really? At least it wasn't as bad as AC1, where dying people would talk for 5 minutes straight. Oh, and the final 'twist' is so monumentally stupid, it hurt. The best/worst part - was when I was playing the 'follow the meeting' mission. You see the blatantly obvious bad guys, 10 feet in front of you. I decided, fuck this mission, I'm going to finish this. Killed all 5 guys before the 'mission failed' came up. In my mind, I beat the game, early. I really hate when open world gaming means "Run for 10-15 minutes between each mission, but do EXACTLY WHAT WE SAY in each mission, or fail." (yes, I realize animus is supposed to follow history, but wow, shitty game mechanic. It is poor game design when I can kill the final boss early, easily.) GTA4 was the single worst game for this. There is one mission where you are supposed to hijack a delivery truck. So, the delivery truck pulls in, and I pull out my sniper rifle, aim, and blam... bullet proof glass. First time in the entire game, only car to actually have this... on a fish delivery truck. And why does GTA4 not let me do the mission this way? So I can play a FUCKING QUICKTIME EVENT. This is NOT open world gaming. This is kick you in the balls for spending $50 on an interactive movie with long boring commutes between parts of the movie. *sigh* I miss the Hitman games.

I think the simplest explanation is also the most likely here: SM64 not only displays at 30FPS; it also only receives input at 30FPS. The extra polling the console does is ignored. Of course this should be tested, but it just strikes me as extremely unlikely that this hasn't already been considered.
This is highly unlikely - remember, the console doesn't poll the controller without the game asking it to - otherwise, we'd never have lag frames. Thus, it most likely has interrupt handling code that reads the joystick, deals with timing, and etc. It would actually take more coding to deal with throwing away every other input, than to just deal with each input in a stereotyped fashion.

Do you think the creators of Mupen would have made such a drastic mistake? It seems the case with my testing, but...really?!
AFAIK, Mupen-rr is separate from Mupen, the main program. Frame advance was probably added by nitsuja, who created Mupen-rr. Thus, he wasn't an expert on the N64 platform, just an expert on adding re-recording. Also, I've spoken with adelikat about this before - it would be far better for TASing if games did input advance instead of frame advance - i.e. allowed each poll to be different.

I am not going to do this, don't bother. Also, Alien Hominid was a great choice, it had RNG manipulation, different forms of movement, and lots of choices to be made. Ironically, of your list of people, 1 has never made a published TAS, and 1 has stopped TASing for years, and 1 mocked your idea.

Not a single game on that list interests me in the slightest. Honestly, once Sony lost FF exclusiveness, they lost me as an interested customer. My NES and SNES get more love than my 360 anyway. I can't stand most new games... Also, Ass-ass-in's Creed II was purely awful. 3 hours of play before you get to your first assassination. The end was stolen from Indian Jones and the Crystal Skull. Of all the hollywood scripts to steal from, why one of the worst of the decade?

Enemy X/Y? Do you have the wrong game? Final Fantasy games work by step counting - take a fixed number of steps, encounter, reset step counter. This is why Deign saves and resets during his TAS - it resets the step counter without actually having an encounter. Every FF with known encounter mechanics uses this, AFAIK.

Yes, we should make sure only wealthy white land owners vote, because they know what is best for the plebeians. Anyway, the only reason that it WOULD isolated is because the players in the contest have to suffer whatever game is chosen. Sometimes, the most popular game would be the worst TAS to make. Thus, if I did separate the vote, it would only be to allow players in the contest to vote for their own mercy and sanity; not out of some superiority complex.

Yes, it is important to move forward and positive, but trying to pretend current consequences are not a direct result of prior decisions is just immature and foolish. Beginning my lab project this semester, I have begun to find a few conflicts with the N64. So the N64 requests inputs at 60 times per second, which makes sense with the 360i (60fps interlaced) video the N64 produces. The SuperMario64 TAS is ~18,200 frames for the 5 minutes, which calculated out comes to 60fps. Using the TASeditV1 tool here http://www.bluetoaster.net/emu/tools.htm , I convert the m64 file into a txt file, so I can load it onto a microcontroller. However, the created txt file is only ~9100 lines of frame data. This 9100 is 1/2 of the 18,200 frames TASvideos says the video is. Is this a problem with the TASedit tool, or does the txt file contain all the frame data, but the N64 only updates once per 2 frames instead of once per frame? I confirmed that the actual console does poll inputs once per frame (at 60fps interlaced).
Wow, this could be huge - this means that there technically could be more frame savings locked in Mario 64, if you had true 60 Hz polling, as opposed to the 30Hz polling that Mupen does. The problem with Mupen (and PCSX-rr, for that matter) is that they frame advance on the GPU update, as opposed to the V-sync. Now, for games like Grand Theft Auto 2, that is fine - it only polls once per 2 v-syncs. However, for games like Final Fantasy 8, and possibly Mario 64, this provides less possible input than the console is actually allowing for. I had fixed PCSX when we switched over to PSXjin, and now it accurately frame advances on the V-sync, even though the GPU only updates once per 2 frames. This, of course, is a pain in the ass to Motharayas, who is attempting to do GTA2, and has too many vsyncs. Very interesting. Perhaps Mario 64 could be sub-5 minutes with true-vsync-polling.
