I can only comment as far as the United States goes, but reverse engineering is not illegal as long as it isn't used for the purposes of enabling copyright infringement. (Digital Millennium Copyright Act). As far as licenses go, remember, even if you break a software 'license' it is breaking a contract, and not actually 'illegal.' It is a civil case, and thus you'd need a company to actually take you to court, and present a preponderance of evidence that shows you violated terms of your agreement, and that agreement was actually binding. (AFAIK, end-user license agreements haven't been tested in US Courts). So, yeah, as far as breaking into a game code, and showing what makes it tick, don't worry. Presenting the entire ROM for download? That is an issue.

Funny, yes. But not very interesting. I said no to a boring text picture for this run.

Not until I get to the actual route planning. Thus far, I have my dialog-skip script in place, and it seems to be catching all the boxes. I've got a starting level-up script - I managed to get 2 attack, 3 dex, and 3 luck for Cloud's first level up! I need to figure out all the enemy stats such as dex and luck, so I can get the battle script in place. Also, I've figured out that Limit Levels are all loaded at the start of the game, so no manipulation there.

Not quite. I am currently working on finding relevant memory addresses, the next part is writing scripts. Actual TASing is a ways away.

So, the Battle RNG is located at 0x062E18 (RNGOffset), and uses addresses 0x062E10 to 0x062E17 (R[#]). The RNG is based off a look-up table (LUT). The RNG advances 1 step per use, and 1 step per 4 frames. How it works, is that RNGOffset increments 0-7, and takes the value of the LUT at (R[RNGOffset]). Then, both RNGOffset and R[RNGOffset] increment. The values of R[#] are randomized at the start of the battle. However, prediction of values should be pretty simple with a decent lua script. Interestingly, it appears that they attempted to do this in Final Fantasy 8 as well. In FF8, there is an RNGOffset at 0x000EEBB0, and the R[#] starts at 0x000EEBA8. As in FF7, all R[#] values are randomized at the start of the battle. HOWEVER, in FF8, RNGOffset is chosen at the start of the battle, and never changes. Thus, only one R[#] cycles. Given this info, my money is that they ported the RNG code directly, and then somehow screwed up the implementation, so, while RNGOffset was meant to change, it was a coder error that lead to the very non-randomness of FF8.

An offering to the great Lord Anoobis. An improvement of 3 minutes, going into the 9th battle. Hopefully, this is enough to appease the gods.

How hard would it be to add the input and then change the file? If we want a true comparison, then a matching TAS time should be listed on the site? Just a thought...

Sure, it's a problem if you make a video copy of a movie or something, but that's not what we're doing. Who thought this had to do with streaming video produced from a video game?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machinima#Legal_issues This gives a pretty good overview of why gameplay videos are still copyright-protected by the creators of the video game.

Well, look at the bright side. If the US government thinks that their police force and judiciary system has the time and resources to prosecute the thousands and thousands of individuals who send copyrighted material to others, that must mean that all the more serious crimes (such as drug trafficking, organized crime, gang wars, violence, rape, child abuse, discrimination, hate crimes, theft and so on) have been mostly solved and do not burden these officials. who are mostly twiddling their thumbs and have nothing better to do. That must mean that the crime statistics are looking pretty good in the US.
I lol'd. If only...

http://shoryuken.com/2011/06/29/trolling-the-stream-by-ultradavid/ In short, another bullshit copyright law is entering the Senate, and could put an end to streaming of video game footage. Before, we've been protected by the fact that Nintendo, Capcom, Sega, and etc don't care about streaming video game footage. However, this would no longer be the choice of the corporation to pursue legal action, but instead the choice of the United States Government Justice Department. Yeah.

A new submission for this game should be at least as entertaining or more than the currently published UMK3 movie. http://tasvideos.org/2308S.html This movie is not. You barely use any glitches, stay as Shang Tsueng for the majority of the run, and the play is just not interesting. No vote.

It's ok anyway, this run will still be published because of one reason, there is a TASVideos rule that specifies that a TAS must be in Hard Mode if possible without SRAM, that said, your run will be published as long as it seems optimal enough on Hard Mode, and obviously, Cheetah's run will become obsoleted.
As a judge, what Rolanmen1 said, so take comfort.

Without him, I would have never been able to become as good at TASing this game as I am now. There are also many other reasons why I have to thank him. Whenever I needed a hex-editor, I knew he could help me and of course he also made a lot of good discoveries I made use of in this TAS such as the Infinite Superslide. On top of that the whole first 3-Day Cycle was done by him, so his huge influence on this project is still visible.
If he did the first twenty minutes of the run, shouldn't he be included as an author? Otherwise, great stuff. I couldn't tell what was going on half the time. So many great parts, like not even starting the final temple until the countdown begins.

I'd like to clarify the position of the administration here. First and foremost, we have Site Rules which explain the rules for behavior on this site. That should be sufficient to tell people how to behave, without requiring us to point out specific examples of how not to behave. I've updated them to clarify some recent banning activity. If you are wondering what activity will get you banned, look there. Additionally, if you have issues or questions regarding a specific user being banned, then feel free to contact any administrator. I am happy to answer any questions you have regarding any of our previous banned users. Additionally, any issues you have, I will discuss with the other admins, or you can address them directly if it is an issue with me. I can also direct you to any relevant threads. However, do these via private channels, either IRC or PM. What we will not do here is allow massive forum drama to revolve around banned users. Additionally, we won't create a list which some may see as an achievement to be put on. This is why threads involving banned users are quickly locked, and dealt with.
