Hm yeah the comments do indeed say that. May be version differences. Square games are notorious for making stuff harder in international and PAL versions. For exmple making Ruby Weapon imune to KOTR unless you Hades it first in FFVII and adding all the dark Aeons to FFX.
Yeah, Japan doesn't think much of American gamers. See Final Fantasy IV 'Easy Type,' Final Fantasy USA: Mystic Quest, Super Mario Bros USA. Split Infinity's guide says at the top it is from the PAL version, so it might be.

And how did you get it?
Actually, it is ridiculously simple. Selphie < ~40 HP (I've not found the magic number yet) hits crisis level 4, at RNG position 179. (The RNG uses a look-up table, so the 180th position in the table.) This rolls a "Tomba-Mod" of 4, which uses set 15 of spells, and picks "The End." Shorter summary: RNG 179, Selphie < 40 HP, The End.

Huh, you were totally right. I biffed that, miss-attribution error. I thought I had read it from that FAQ, but I'm guessing it came from the youtube comments here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iL0OOpeSWJU I'll have to check it out once I get there, for curiosity sake.

Finally watched this. Great work - it is easy to tell how much more optimized this version is. One question - some times you walk out of the dwarf cave, other times you use the rope. Why the change?

The most of my appreciation goes to adelikat and zeromus. Without them, I would have neither the know-how nor confidence to help improve the emulators on this site. Additionally, without zeromus's continued support in my efforts towards PSXjin, the Final Fantasy 8 TAS wouldn't be possible. He vehemently hates that emulator, yet puts the hate aside and continues to help me make it better. I hope that the knowledge they've taught me will be put to good use in the future, towards better emulator/TAS tools and new TASing platforms.

wow, i didn't know it would be possible to get "the end" so early in the game. i'd like to know how you did it, but i doubt it would make much sense to me. the only other place where the end is useful is the very last boss (the freak ultimecia). how fitting to use the end at the end of the game :P i also like seeing stats and commands. removing them would be more boring because RPG TASes are too much like movies already.
I especially enjoyed that I figured out how to get the end without 'rolling' for it. Note that it comes up as the first spell. If Selphie gains any levels, I may not be able to pull the same trick anyway. Also, if this FAQ is to be believed, Ultimecia's final form (and earlier?) is invincible to 'The End.' However, after Ultimecia is 'dead', and you just need to trigger the final speech, 'The End' can be used to trigger it, which would be funny, but extremely time intensive, when 1 damage would be enough to trigger it. Also, I can see places where I use running-away to speed up the end of the battle, which I could remove that "Can't Escape" line, which would look better. For example, the diablos battle ends an entire second early, due to the run trick. Getting rid of "Can't Escape" during that could clean up the run.

This video now has only 24% No votes, well within reason for publication under Nach's 30% rule. I am very tempted to do a more detailed analysis of the comments left in this thread, as I believe that positive ones now significantly outnumber negative ones, but it would be kind of a lot of work. Adelikat, would you find a numerical breakdown of how many people have expressed positive, negative, and neutral opinions in this thread helpful in judging the movie? If so, I'll do it. I fear that sometimes the vehemence of some comments ends up skewing our perceptions of the actual counts. Of course, the numbers aren't everything, but they're kind of the best metric we have, and it seems good to make sure we actually know what they are. One thing I did go ahead and do was search for posts containing the words 'nauseous', 'nausea', 'vomit', 'sick', and 'ill', as Nach had expressed concern that this run might cause such problems for some viewers. Exactly one post, by Pointless Boy, expressed such a concern. I don't mean to trivialize Pointless Boy's experience; that really sucks and it sucks that he can't enjoy this run. But as he said, he experienced similar nausea watching the film Cloverfield -- some people are, unfortunately, sensitive to fast, swingy 3D motion. I don't think the problem is widespread, and I don't think we can reject a run because such people exist, just as the producers of Cloverfield went ahead and released their movie, and theaters played it.
It got to me a little, but not as bad as any of the fps N64 games. The worst part was actually hexable, i.e. the zooming at the end of the bowser fight.

So, there may be 4 possible runs, Dark Tides & Dark Portal as both Orcs and Humans (AFAIK, each is a separate campaign. ) I am getting irritated with Final Fantasy 8, and I was curious what this game would look like TAS'd, so here is a quick test run of the first two Dark Tide Orc Levels. This raises problems. What about already established games where the character does things offscreen, like in SMW, or the Sonic games? By those rules, they'd be rejected.
Those games, the camera isn't chosen, and even then, people clamor for camhacks. This game, the author(s) gets to choose camera angles.

I felt like the new camera angles were too closely zoomed on mario. Also, the totally unnecessary zooming in and out after each bowser fight was awful.

How much time has analog movement saved so far?
No idea, it just produces cleaner looking movement. Saves a few frames here and there - it would be really difficult to put exact numbers to it. I posted a new section - it is mainly the same, except for the Diablos fight: Link to video

Now that an encode is up, can we get more feedback? Great music, but I found the game pretty meh, as far as action goes.

Are you trying the MAME-RR? That version is totally unsupported, has not been validated or check by the site, and the coder behind it has long since left this site. Sorry, but until someone picks up the torch of mame/fba rerecording, the arcade emulators are stuck the way they are.

Looking good - the frame war definitely paid off, this version looks much cleaner. Hopefully you two maintain this same level of quality, it will make for a great run.

Couldn't you do something along the lines of replacing the Playstation's CD drive with a solid-state drive? Sure you wouldn't be running on the original console any more, but you'd be using the console's logic, just with a different (and transparent to the console) loading method.
From my (very limited) experience with Playstation emulation, it seems like you'd have to put some pretty intense hardware between the CD input to the board, and the playstation itself. It isn't simply like a standard IDE connection, you'd have to build a piece of hardware to translate the CD commands.

You have no idea how sad this makes me.
http://emudocs.org/Genesis/genhw.txt I was looking at this doc - It appears that the genesis puts out a vsync signal through the cartridge port! This would actually make it more sync stable than the NES bot (where micro500 is forced to approximate the vsync). Unfortunately, I've heard grumbling in the past that gens is not really a very accurate emulator, so who knows how sync-stable any movie would be.

I know about the limit break trick. But if you watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKnp_vmyoq4&feature=feedu at 12:12, Squall uses the skip button a lot but, obviously, does not get a limit break. Is this to manipulate Quistis' limit break as well, or like i said earlier, is it some some of trick to manipulate Ifrit into not attacking. (he did no attack the entire match)
It is a little of both actually. I think, in the specific instance you are talking about, it was to move the RNG to the right spot for Quistis's Laser Eye to be at Crisis Level 4 (max). However, Ifrit can also be manipulated into doing nothing (so long as his HP > 530). This requires that Quistis have two turns inside of one of his. Also, you will note that I go crazy with the RNG at the Fasticolon-F battle. This is because only 1 of the 256 RNG positions drops more than a single fish fin, at CL4 for Quistis.

sorry for the useless post I have to say, I absolutely love this and micro500 gets all my respect :) hope for it to be developed further and for more emulators too
It will totally depend on the polling method. For example, Genesis will never work (without modifying the console) because the polling is done internally. Each wire is linked to a button, (identical to the Atari and the SMS). Playstation (and any other CD based consoles) will probably never work, because of the inherent stochastic nature of reading CDs. The turbografx might work, because it does use a polling line. The N64 uses a bi-directional data line so... maybe? I doubt the emulation in Mupen is accurate enough for any run to sync, however.

How inaccurate is PCSX, though, really? I'm not sure I see the point with this. The main comparison I can make is to adelikat's movie of Eggerland, which was more accurately emulated than the Famtasia run by Bag of Magic Food. However, by that point, Famtasia was obsolete. In this case, PCSX isn't obsolete yet.
Also note that he did improve the famtasia movie, it is just the lag that killed his time, iirc. The only accuracy increase between PCSX-rr and PSXjin was the SPU. The CPU and GPU were left relatively untouched. If the sound has no discernible difference, then there isn't much need to update. Also, Grunt, the SPU is very important for timing, and causes timing differences, so that would lead to a longer time. As much as I dislike the turd that is PCSX-rr, I have to say I don't see the point in a non-improved update.
