Why was this rejected?
In seriousness, this run was rather poorly received. The biggest issue was that the majority of comments, both positive and negative, focused on the adult content, making it hard to evaluate the actual TAS content. Thus, I relied more heavily on the votes than normal, which this TAS failed. As far as the actual TAS goes, I did find it interesting that the hands got progressively worse, and thought that Deign's ability to win on Ace high actually made the movie interesting, and a well done TAS. However, as I said, it was poorly received. Additionally, we do have younger than 18 year old viewers, so providing porn, even pathetic 8-bit boobs, could become an issue. In the event of a publishable adult content movie, I believe the administrators should make a decision on adult content and censorship for this site. (Note, Altered Beast is not specifically adult content, as a minor may not understand it.) I hope that answers your question.

The Arduino used for the NESBot can be plugged into a computer for ease of use (loading new programs onto the card, etc.), but it also has its own onboard clock for realtime (i.e. very low reaction time) activity. I assume it would be possible to write a program that would let you send controller input with your keyboard, through the Arduino, and on to the console, allowing you to play a "real" console game with your keyboard. I couldn't guess what kind of additional input latency that extra translation layer would impose though.
Yeah - this is what microcontrollers are meant for. A PC for this application is trying to use a sledge hammer to squash a fly. Use the best tool for the job.

The advantage of this would be quite clear: Not only would the adapter be (most probably) a lot cheaper and easier to build, but programming the "bot" would become much easier and versatile because you can do it with whichever language you like (as long as it has some way of reading and writing that port). Since I'm not an electronics expert, I was hoping that the people here who have much more knowledge about these things could share their opinion on this.
Even at your cheapest option, you'd still need some way to convert an RS232 signal into something the console could understand. This would require an RS232 chip, a 4021 shift register, and probably some logic handling for buffers. In short, what the microcontroller already does. The reason for the cost of a project like this really isn't in the chips though. It is in the PCB manufacture. Now, you could solder everything on a protoboard, but that is a massive time consumption. Now, if we were talking about making 50,000 NESbots, we could get the price down to around $10 per unit, total. Small run PCBs are expensive. The chips are cheap. Finally, the language option really isn't a barrier - Arudino's C is extremely simple to understand and do. If you look at the NESbot code, it is trivially simple. So multi-lingual doesn't really translate into a value.

I enjoyed it, but it isn't a completed game - so it really can't be a completed TAS. So, I have to go with No.

I liked the overall concept - my only issue was this being a little too similar in the middle, using the bane sword. However, that ending made up for it. I'm somewhere between yes and meh. Definitely open to seeing this published, however.

I'm posting hoping that people who knew him on this site will find this and know why he is no longer around, and hoping to find anyone who talked with him frequently to maybe find out more information for his family. This glitch might have the potential to allow us to finish the game in 20 seconds, but it's not well understood yet and all I did so far was random testing.
That was very awesome. However, you seem to break blocks in the "ROM" area of the map, which has been said to be illegitimate on an actual gameboy. Correct me if I'm wrong.

This run definitely offended my sensibilities! The offensive part of the run isn't her boobs, it is her poker playing. Dear god she is horrible. She always raises, despite her best hand being Ace High. It is draw poker - it is probably a near statistical impossibility to consistently get hands that bad. Seriously, that was some offensively bad poker playing.

I'd like to offer an apology, on behalf of the staff, to everyone for the last 24 hours at TASvideos.org. The April Fool's "joke", if you can call it that, was perpetrated by one administrator, done without so much as informing any other staff member of his intentions. That said, the rest of us are guilty since we did not put a stop to this offensive rubbish immediately. For that, I am truly sorry, and ask your forgiveness. World War 2, Nazi Germany, and the Holocaust are nothing to joke about. More than 6 million innocent people were murdered simply because of their race or sexual orientation due to the holocaust. These people suffered in ways that we can not imagine. An additional 14 million allied soldiers died in to prevent the spread of German Fascism. The entirety of the Third Reich is a dark stain on human history, and still wounds many people to this day. It is not something that should be made light of. I understand that some people will see this as a harmless joke. However, we stand to lose valued members of the community over this prank. I'd like to thank Dacicus, ais523, BrandonE, Sifl, and bobotheking for bringing the severity of this issue to my attention. We will be addressing the staff communication issues in private, and hopefully resolve them, so issues like these don't arise in the future. I welcome your comments, admonishments, and contributions. Thank you all for being patient with us, and I sincerely apologize to all who were offended.

I, DarkKobold, am tired of this. This joke was done in poor taste. I am going to do all I can to reverse this poorly done joke. Nach pulled this prank without consulting any of the rest of the staff. It was done in poor taste, and without any input. I'm sorry, I wish I would have started this earlier. I hope that people will forgive the site.

I haven't been following closely, but what were the plans for BH being the official emulator of TASVideos and gradually ousting all/most other rerecording emulators used here about? Is that still relevant? Because these ideologies don't mix well.
I think the idea was for that to happen, just by the general usability, not by force. People seem to be harping on adelikat for calling it the "preferred" NES emulator. Yeah, that may have jumped the gun a bit, but he was enthusiastic about his project; AND that word has been since retracted. No one is being forced at gun-point to abandon FCEUX. Given the comments here, you'd think people were.
moozooh wrote:
(Btw, "such" in your line refers to "part of TASVideos"; you probably meant to say "shouldn't be treated as such".)
Hmmm. I'm getting my English corrected by the Russian. Me fail. Anyway, shouldn't it actually refer to Bizhawk, since the 2nd part of the sentence starts with and? Separated, it would be: Bizhawk is not part of TASVideos. Bizhawk should be treated as such.

I think it’s sad how adelikat is actually trying to justify himself now his reply to all the complains before can be summed up with: “lol no I don’t want to, shut up” and now he thinks he’s right or something
So, people complain he hasn't justified his decision, so he does. He can't hop into a time machine and justify it in the past. Additionally, he was FAR more concerned with dealing with ACTUAL BUG REPORTS than people's silly name issue. There's been two BizHawk releases in two weeks, with many bugs fixed. It isn't like the dev team has been sitting around with its collective thumbs up its ass. Talk about not being able please everyone. Also, we will continue to accept movies from FCEUX, and have no plans to abandon it as a submittable format. If you really hate the name BizHawk, or the extension ".tas", so much that you would not use an emulator, don't. And seriously, it is just a name. How about be thankful for the work the team put in, rather than get into a bike shed argument?

This post is actually quite disrespectful to the authors of the emulator. This isn't the workbench. BizHawk is NOT part of tasvideos, and should be treated as such.
CoolKirby wrote:
They made the emulator for the community, for us.
No, no they did not. They made it for themselves. I have no idea where you got this idea, but it seems fairly selfish. zeromus made the emulator to improve his knowledge about how the NES works. adelikat is working to become a better coder, to increase his job opportunities. There are 3 major developers, zeromus, vecna, and adelikat. Only 1/3rd of them are actually 'Staff' of tasvideos. zeromus is only partially active here, never TASes, and really doesn't care for them. He helps on TASing emulators, but that isn't his main focus. We should be thankful for the time he does spend - PSXjin, for example, is a far improvement over PCSXrr, thanks in great part to him. So, only 1/3rd has any responsibility to this community; however, just because he is staff here, doesn't mean everything he does belongs to the tasvideos community. Are you going to suggest that we get to name adelikat's next child as well? Or do we all get to vote on what jobs he is allowed to take?
CoolKirby wrote:

You really would not use an emulator because of its name? It isn't sexually suggestive. Nor is it racist, offensive, or otherwise negative. I fail to see how it deeply offends you. In short, if none of the developers were attached to TASvideos, you wouldn't be complaining about it. However, you feel that adelikat's position here makes you free to somehow inflict community control on his outside, but related, project.

Nothing magic happens. Its just a threshold. I'd also assume that not a whole ton of thought was put into the exact age. I'd assume that the law makers assumed a good percentage of teenagers are considered 'mature' enough to make decisions regarding sex by the age of 18. Would 16 be better? 20? 30? I'm not going to comment on that. Basically, you need some fixed threshold, because it would be foolish to have to examine each and every person's maturity to determine whether or not they are mature enough to appear in porn. Please fill out Gov't form B6: Maturity Measurement Scale 106-B7 before taking off your clothes. EDIT: Ooops

Personally, I would think blazing through the impossible to perfect levels like in the any% TAS would be more jarring than skipping them outright, as is done here. Collecting all rings regardless of whether the bonus is obtainable might be nice, but it might seem weird to someone who's just watching the TAS at random -- "why does he get perfect on this level but not that one?" for instance.
I can see this point, it is very rational. I'd think aiming for maximum ring collection in those levels (even if perfect isn't possible) would be the goal, not blazing through.

I'll be honest, I agree with you on this point. Seeing improvements -- even the tiniest ones -- to existing runs does entertain me (provided I liked the original run in the first place, of course. I'm not gonna be watching improvements to any Final Fantasy TASes any time soon =p). I was just as happy as probably the rest of the 20 page group upon seeing SMB1 actually improved by anything whatsoever. Having said this, I do not control the minds of everyone else in the other, previously mentioned forum. Everyone else has their own opinions, and some others might not find a single frame improvement to really be noteworthy. This is perfectly fine, no?
I agree 100%! People are free to find them not noteworthy! However, to say that this site SUCKS ASS because people do these small frame improvements is just silly. TASVideos can only do two things - provide a place for things to be submitted, and accept or reject them. Everything else is pretty much up to the users. Additionally, I'm using my responses to you to talk to that forum, since I can tell they are watching with baited breath. (For example, that 'terrorist' comment was directed at the thread in general, not you.)

I had not judged any of these previous runs. So, out of fairness, I went back and reviewed all of the relevant threads. It appears that there were only 2 negative voices against the level skip, through the 4 threads. (Amusingly ironic, now, seeing who those two voices were.) Anyway, long story short, very few people had a problem with the original switch, and it hasn't been raised as an issue since, so I see no reason for a judge to reconsider, or ask for a longer version. So, yes, you are correct. An exception doesn't necessitate that it will apply to all future submissions, however, I don't see anyone asking for the next submission of the game to go back to all levels. If you think you'd prefer to see all levels in the next submission, feel free to make that noticed, in the appropriate thread. However, just using it as a template to whine about this decision is pointless. Now, lets look at this submission. I count at least 5 people saying they disliked the level skips, and many no votes. (I also disliked the skips, I found them jarring and unnecessary.) I do feel the sloppiness comments were overrated for a first time TAS, and, had I been the judge, I may have still rejected it, but only on the level skips. However, Sonic 2 is easily hexed, so inserting the full levels would be trivial. I'd like the author to just resubmit that. And finally, another non-related whine, it is absolutely foolish and asinine to complain about people making small # of frame improvements. We never dictate what runs our users work on - it is their free time, and it would be "ruling with an iron fist" to tell them they can or can't work on a run. Additionally, it would be foolish for us to reject a submitted run because the number of frames improved is too small. We want the best runs here. Also, yeah, people get excited when SMB gets improved by 1 frame, and there are magically 20 pages. Once again, that is our user base posting of their own free will, not us telling them to post. The Truth, brought to you by DarkKobold. EDIT: Since I don't feel like creating an account, I'll respond to the issues brought up here. Participating in an offsite area, where everyone is basically circlejerking, and talking about what a shitty website this is, even going as far as to use the word "terrorize" (oops, I didn't get an inside joke!), is not going to leave me with a ton of respect for that person. So yes, he may be polite here, but off-site, he is working everyone into a frenzy, much like Fox News does. Obama is not a muslim-terrorist-constitution-destroying-kenyan, nor is this website even half the horrible things being said about it. I admitted to, and corrected my mistakes. Lets see what happens on the other side.
