Chester, Gerhalt, Luke, and Jaha should have all been killed off faster. If I ever re-do this run, I'd probably kill them off a battle or 2 sooner. Sarah, on the other hand, serves possibly the most important role in the force. Since she is guaranteed to be in last place for every 'battle round', when her turn ends/menu closes, it selects the randomization for the next battle round. She will be alive, at level 1, for the entirety of the run. Technically, I could allow someone who 'falls behind' in levels to take over her position. However, that requires more manipulation than keeping her alive does. Her low, low agility and relative uselessness (as a healer) in a TAS makes her perfect for this job. The necessity of manipulating turn order will be very apparent once I'm home and able to post that WIP. I'll youtube those battles, hopefully, so ZeXr0 can watch them. Also, I'll post some Screenshots of my Lua scripts in action.

So, the Kraken and Taros battles are completed. I'll post them soon. These are the first set of battles that look much like the battles in SF1. The Taros battle, in particular, took quite a bit of time to get right. I saved a minute over my first iteration. Hopefully you will all enjoy them.

Hum do you plan on having Slade on your team ? If so, you might want to be create his sword with instead death chance. It might be faster in the later battle if you can kill the enemies in one hit. You could keep the DarkSword for Lemon no ? Even if it's cursed, it might be usefull. You may want to take a look at the cursed weapon, if you can manipulate the fact that you will attack and not being stunt, if might be useful. I'm pretty sure you will keep Luke, even if he sucks hard, you need all the flying characters you can to go faster.
So, Luke is already dead. His attack power sucked too much, and the force that I stick with is too quickly out-leveling... everyone. Also, the Atlas Axe is the 2nd most-powerful mithril axe - but it has +1 to MOV. Gisarme is Slade's weapon that has a 1-hit kill possibility, and also his strongest weapon. If you watch the WIP, he is by far the most valuable force member until the Kraken battle. He will be quickly overtaken, in value. Also, the Lemon glitch... that's interesting... I'm worried about that now; however I may not even need him. I'm noticing that a smaller force pays off. Sticking with 4-5 characters (excluding Sarah!) seems more optimal.

Do you know who you will get at Creed's house ? And I don't know if it's useful, but you can give a centaur a special item to promote them to flying character, maybe it could speed up the game. But the item is pretty far in the game. Are you planning on getting the Rumming Pimento item ?
Both Pimentos and the Running Ring are 100% guaranteed pick-ups. Chester got too weak too fast, so I think I will go with Elric in Creeds. With Jaro, I'll have 2 7 MOV flyer with Halberds. I'm pretty sure, at this point, I'll want 4 mithril for Gisarme, 2 Halberds, and an Atlas Axe (for Lemon). The first Pimento won't be used on who you think it will. After I finish the Kraken battle, it will become obvious. Here is a new version. The next battle is one i've been looking forward to. I'm pretty sure it won't go down the way anyone thinks it will. http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/696070122/Shining%20Force%20II%20%28U%29%20%5B!%5D.gmv

My concern was more about the fact that you said "well he isn't even going to watch/enjoy the run so I don't care what he says" really detracts from your argument. You can't only listen to people who are going to be rooting for the run, or you will get a false positive.
I've thought about this more, and I think this is still wrong, in a certain way. If I'm only interested in publishing, than this is the correct thinking. I'd need to get both interested and uninterested opinions on the matter. However, if I'm making a movie simply to entertain, than this is actually correct way to look at things. Lets split people into two groups - Group A, who will not be entertained by the movie with or without the speedup code, and Group B, who will be entertained by the movie with or without the speedup code. Now, Group A, I can't entertain them regardless of what I do. Thus, why should I care about their opinion, when I can't effect their level of entertainment/boredom? (Hey look, I spieled it write!) Group B, on the other hand, will be entertained, and would prefer to see the speedup code used. Thus, to maximize their entertainment, I use the code. I fail to see why Group A matters for anything other than being published? They are going to be bored my movie, and maybe hate it a little more because of the code. Who cares about their level of boredom/hate? Maybe my movie won't get published. That would suck, but it happens. In the end, I'd rather appease those who are rooting for the run, than to make a movie that may or may not meet the standards of the site.

Thanks for the encode alden! I need to make corrections to the map script. I'll make it bigger, and make sure it turns off at appropriate times. Also, I hope you don't mind if I change the Screenshot. Thanks again.

I notice you are not using the jitter-walk. Does it not work, or is it not worth the effort for the test run?

Not entirely. I try and maximize levels when possible. The first 11 battles are mostly 'kill all enemies.' That pretty much forces my hand, in having to level.

I was just showing off there. Its rare to be able to move over a character without having to double back. Here is a new one There is about 6-8 minutes of unavoidable talking during the tower escape cutscene. Ugh. Hopefully, after battle 10, the game will start to speed-up. Already 1 hour in.

I did watch your SF1 first submission, which I admittedly gave a 2 in entertainment. To be fair, I've only watched maybe 10 runs in the last year or so, mostly because I have been too busy to really watch anything that wasn't sloppily encoded in the Workbench/something of great interest to me. I'm not the hugest fan of the series, but I will still sit through the runs and give props where they are due. If you are creating runs for niche viewers, though, that's pretty silly. I would watch a 6 hour run of any game if it was entertaining. If you're going to start writing off the opinions of people who aren't just dying to see runs of games you like, I hope you don't take any opposition to heart. That being said, I think this debate has pretty much come to a stand still. The idea of using cheats to speed up games has been rejected in the past, but maybe there will be an exception for this. Let the judges decide how things will go from here.
Just want to say, I take your opinion much more seriously now. Even though you didn't enjoy my last run, you watched it, which gives you more say. I don't know why you think that 'niche' viewers are bad. Some enjoy RPG runs, others don't. I personally am bored with most 'Walk right for justice' movies these days. Not all movies will fill every taste. I'm actually doing the Shining Series because I want to do it. Don't get me wrong, publication does mean quite a bit. However, I had the Shining Force 1 publication pretty well sealed. I re-did it 3 times over for my own goals.

I would gladly watch the run if it was interesting WITHOUT the need for speeding up cursor movement. If you can't say that, I don't know why you would want the run up on the site.
It will be interesting to those who will find it interesting (read: NOT YOU). The speed-up cheat will simply save them hours of their life. I'm 100% sure the fans of the run would watch it either way, but it turns a 6 hour run into a 4 hour run, with the ONLY difference being the amount of time spent watching a cursor move between enemies.

Did you watch any of my 4 submissions of Shining Force 1? I highly doubt it, as you didn't post in any of the threads. Thus, I find your opinion pretty dang useless. If a judge wants to chime in, I'm all ears.

Well, the people in the thread, who are actually going to WATCH the run (read: Not Zurreco or Warp), have pretty unanimously voted for the use of the code. Thus, I'm going to go with the people who actually want the run, and are excited to see it. It does NOT affect the randomization. It just affects the amount of time the viewer has to sit and watch the cursor move around the screen. Since this game can't be uber-optimized like SF1, I think I'll spare the audience a slow cursor. It also does NOT speed up the rate at which text is displayed, It also does not speed up character movement. ZeXr0: I wish you hadn't even brought this up. Anyone who cares about this run has already spoken in favor of it. Its not going to save minutes, its going to save hours. The run will easily be 4 hours long.

I am totally in favor of having this repository. Hopefully this will inspire some to write and share more and more lua scripts. Also, I'd love to see my runs obsoleted someday.

This is an issue for the moderators of this website, not the government. Also, copyright is useless without a way to enforce it (as I said before). Look at the problems the RIAA is having enforcing copyrights on profitable, obviously copyrighted material. This conversation on using the legal system to protect your movie files is just silly. In the case mentioned above, this is an internal site issue; not one for the US or other countries legal system. Absurd that this discussion continues.

So, so damn true. Also, I noticed that Gens can handle this, while FCEUX crashes.
saveme  = savestate.create()
while memory.readwhatever ~= somevalue do
     savestate.save(saveme)
    emu.frameadvance()
end
savestate.load(saveme)
I'm guessing it has to do with how Gens handles the memory used for savestates.

HappyLee, it is sort of upsetting that you are more concerned with the record than the fact that you discovered a brand new trick in a 20+ year old game, that has been played to death. Seriously, while the records may come and go, you are known as the originator of this trick. You should be really happy with that. Also, this trick would have never been discovered had it not been for this cool frame war.

Even if the input file is open-source his author may want add some restriction and I won't give example about this kind of tricky topic. Um, the big problem here isn't whether or not the information is copyrightable. (I'm going to talk in the context of the US Legal system, also, I am not a lawyer, and this is not legal advice) In the case of a civil lawsuit, which this would have to be, you would have to show how you were damaged. Most likely, your motion would be dismissed on a demurer, which is the legal term for "failure to state a claim for which relief can be granted." In plain English, this equates to, we don't care if you are right or wrong, you haven't given any reason for us to believe you deserve compensation for these damages. Not getting your name next to a movie on 'some dumb gaming website' (quoth jimsfriend) is (most likely) not sufficient for a court to award you damages. Thus, the copyright question is just silly. However, if adelikat and Nach start offering monetary rewards for certain achievements, then you'd have a claim for small claims court. (I doubt they will ever do that). Additionally, you'd have an uphill battle to prove you created the initial movie. Anyone who works in a serious research industry keeps a lab notebook, that is signed and dated daily, so that things like this can even have a chance of being defendable in court. Otherwise, its your word versus the defendant's.

Wow, that was pretty epic. The balloon gyrating could have gone, however. I remember when this glitch was first mentioned in the forum, I tried to see if I could make it useful. I thought, wow, no one will ever figure this out; its far too complex. I'm happy to see this run. Emphatic Yes Vote. Also, talking about how you figured out the item glitch would be cool. EDIT: Found in thread. Should be copy/pasted to submission text. Also, for all the trolling we've received, this run is the perfect example of what we might lose if we restrict submission ability from lurkers. I'm changing my stance on that, because of this run.

I just want to add that even the really glitchy runs aren't as unrecognizably glitchy as some people are saying. For example, in the Sonic+Tails S3&K run, some people make it sound as if you're just watching walls fly by with Sonic nowhere in sight the entire time, when in fact over 80% of the movie length is totally normal (unusually fast, but otherwise normal) play.
Its funny, one person mentions they want to see the original 'glitchless' run, but the torrent is down, and all the sudden the entire forum is fixated on this run being 'far too different from a non-glitch run' and too much of a 'speed for entertainment trade-off', and made it into the site's whipping boy. Yet, for each improvement, I don't remember a single person saying 'man, this is less entertaining.'
