I'm working towards making a Bot that automates the TAS of Shining Force 2. I think it is well suited for brute forcing techniques. Each character gets 1 move per round - which opens up 2 branches - position, and wait time till action/action selected. The reason the game is well suited is the way the RNG works. It advances consecutively, once for each access. It can only be manipulated by the player by letting it advance once per frame while a menu is open. Thus, if the player waits 10 frames, and the RNG advances 50 times between the next access (next character), and the results are identical to the previous player waiting 5 frames, then the 10 frame wait can be discarded. I'll be asking for input on my code as I start to get it outlined and online.

Ummm. Totally bad ass. Quick Q? You seem to always get keys = number need for that dungeon. Can you transport keys from 1 dungeon to the next?

I hope the guidelines make that somewhat clear. I posted some initial thoughts about this here, but I agree that this doesn't answer your question very well. Therefore I hope there will also be some suggestions made for guidelines, and if we end up agreeing on some kind of answer to your question, it might be good to work it into the guidelines somehow. I'm not satisfied with either the formulation, or the specifics of the guidelines, so input is welcome.
Don't take offense to this, but it seems like you are putting the cart before the horse. The guidelines should come from the purpose, not the purpose from the guidelines. I am actually more at a loss for what the purpose of star'd runs are for now.

Quick question: What is the point of the star list? I don't know about the rest of you, but the TASes I find most entertaining are the games I played ad naseum as a a kid. Thus, if the purpose is to generate website interest, then it is best suited by the list being populated by popular games. However, if it is to get people interested by watching TASes that they wouldn't have watched otherwise, it isn't served well by having all games that are best of the console in the list. No one from the super Nintendo generation really needs to be suggested to watch Super Mario World. Likewise, no one from the Nintendo generation needs to be suggested to watch Super Mario 3. You wouldn't suggest to a football fan: "Hey, heard of the super bowl? You might want to check that out!" So what's the goal?

You saw this coming, yet you are still fighting. Strange. Also, kind of? It DID get obsoleted by the 6%

Xkeeper: Since you are so fond of linking to movies - how about this one? This category was obsoleted before Saturn ever submitted this movie.

Is it required to oscillate like that to keep the camera facing forward? It'd be really nice to actually see where link is going for once in an OoT run.

Wow, winning a ton of friends here. I think it was asked earlier, who do you think you are to be so important to be able to place demands on who replies to your threads or how they do so? You aren't a moderator. Your thread will have zero effect on the direction of this website. If Bisqwit found this a necessary question to ask, he would ask it. Congrats, you are not important.

I understand your position - maybe it would help you to think of it more as "How close to perfection do you think this movie is?" Since it is impossible to know ever know a movie is perfect, then adding the subjective 'you think' makes it the question you desire. Personally, I use technical rating to asses the tools people used. Bots, decompiling, etc. Since no one else looks at it that way, my opinion is roughly as worthwhile as a furnace in the desert.

"Those that fail to learn from history, are doomed to repeat it." -Winston Churchill You, Saturn, have managed to learn nothing from your past. "Don't discuss yourself, for you are bound to lose; if you belittle yourself, you are believed; if you praise yourself, you are disbelieved." -Michel de Montaigne "Falsehood often lurks upon the tongue of him, who, by self-praise, seeks to enhance his value in the eyes of others." -Arnold Bennett Perhaps if you stopped singing your own praises, you'd actually be able to hear constructive criticism.

I think people are largely over looking the things that were not so good in the old days. This tends to be a strong factor in just about every aspect in life e.g. 50/60's were better compared to 80/90's. Normally this is what happens when diversity takes place over time.

I like this movie because: 1) It's an epic RPG that is manipulated so well, it is completed in under 1 minute. 2) 'Walk right for justice' movies bore me to tears these days, this is different, and therefore able to actually make me care. 3) The author spent much time decoding the game, which actually does make the movie more entertaining - not just for his work, but the amount of work required to pull such a stunt. Sort of how you dislike the dungeon crawlers, I massively am growing tired of generic ninja walks right for justice movies. This far exceeded my personal entertainment level compared to lots recent submissions.

Where would we get the isos to make the tas', though (rehtorical[sp], mind you). I mean, it is a lot more difficult to find dumps of massive GCN iso's than any 1,000 kb snes rom or whatever. Unless EVERY movie was encoded to AVI and shared that way, a GCN TAS would be quite pointless due to the average internet user not being able to find or not being able to download a whole, clean, [!] GCN iso to watch the movie... the emulation is a small step for TASing, but easy to find isos are the bigger jump.. imho (To cover my ass i give a disclaimer: I am NOT asking for places to get the roms, as stated I was thinking hypothetically and I really dont care to know where I can get the roms or any of that jazz)
This is an interesting issue, but not really pertinent. The only people that need a copy of the game, legit or not, are the runner, encoder (could be same person) and the judge (to verify authenticity). Youtube or Megaupload, or etc could supply the general populous with the run for feedback/critique.
