I thought it was good enough for a yes vote, but possibly improvable. Plus, someone in the community should be able to figure out a way to make the jump to the apt, to save tons of time. I found that I was able to get closer by jumping at the right frame, at pressing autofire on punch. It seemed to extend my jump, by quite a few frames, but not enough to make it.

Were the menus done in frame advance, and just really slow? They seemed to take a long time, compared to most in-game menus. Otherwise, good run.

Due to my absolute obsession with this game, I'm going for a third and final attempt to get complete the entire game in under 2 hours. This will require saving 31204 frames. I've found new ways to manipulate and abuse the game. First and foremost, I determined that ALL character starting statistics can be altered between frames 6:54 and 7:29. (Doing that much manipulation in 35 frames is going to kill me) However, I am vaguely sure that this small portion can be hex-edited in later, as long as I do not alter the frame count going into the game. Second of all, optimizing cursor movements in rounds was done a single round at a time. Thus, I did not account for round transitions. Now, I simulate the ENTIRE BATTLE (so much damn work) in advance, and select the optimal battle, which is an entire set of rounds, as oppose to a single round. (Yes, I do iterate through all 65536^Rounds options, but in a cool way, so it isn't an intractable problem. More on this later.) Finally, when I optimized the rounds last time, it was based on whatever agilities I had obtained at the start and previous battles. Now, I can preset agilities in the super-duper Battle simulator, and determine what agilities complete the round the fastest, and pre-manipulate them. YAY! As a little note, I also found various improvements in the starting few battles, due only to mistakes when starting the last run. These will unfortunately dry up. So, here is a completely uninteresting WIP: (No strategy changes at all) http://dehacked.2y.net/microstorage.php/info/1907964554/Shining%20ForceFinal.gmv It is 860 frames (14.2s) faster to the end of the 3rd battle.

First, you have the correct rom. The checksum passes on my rom, and I'm sure my rom is correct. Second, I think people are being unnecessarily unfair due to the crappy movement in this game. You can't move next to a plant directly, however the game can force you to be next to it. Very strange. Also, encounters do not appear to be random at all. The first encounter happens 100K frames in, and completely based on when you leave the screen. So yeah, maybe this game isn't worth doing... It looks unpolished in a TAS. That isn't your fault, symbolic.

I think this video is full of potential. However, it seems like you get all the money at the start, but make multiple stops. Maybe if you buy enough carpets and bread at the first shop... it would save time. Plus, all walking seemed very off.

So as far as I can tell, there are 2 RNGs that determine deck order. The first one appears to load a preset deck order from the rom. The other actually sort of shuffles the deck when the cards are being dealt. Trying to parse out 2 RNGs is far, far, far too much work for 45 seconds of gameplay.

Last I talked to DeHackEd, the problem was intractable from his perspective. He could and did record inputs, however whenever he would load a state, the controller stopped responding.

He did and does share the source to BisqBot, and other projects. Plus, it's been said numerous times. Open source is the only way any decent TAS emulator will come to light. Now this is coming from a position of complete naivety on plug-ins. Could the 'plug' part be removed, and simply integrated into the code? I.E. a final package, while containing the same plug-ins, is not able to be separated from them? That may reduce headaches, if possible.

It would be really nice if the ram search (Add Cheat) window could stay open while working with it. Right now, to do a search, you have to open the window, search, close it, frame advance, open, search, close, advance. advance -> search -> advance -> search would be nicer.

I also had hopes for this emulator, but the real problem isn't that PSAuthor is so unresponsive, it is the fact that the emulator is closed source. Rerecording usually takes lots of tweaking before it finally works well enough to be used (just look at the snes9x improvement series, for example). Even if PSAuthor had been entusiastic about this, rerecording would probably not be flawless on his first attempt, and then we would have to beg for him to fix every bug we find. So offering to help him is the correct thing to do, but from what I've seen on his forum, he seems to be dead set against that. Perhaps fixing another psx emulator would be easier. Making a plugin-based emulator desync-proof could perhaps be accomplished by writing new tas-friendly plugins that make sure they save their state information correctly. It sounds like a daunting task, but atleast we wouldn't be at PSAuthor's mercy then.
What makes a TAS emulator good isn't just the ability to record inputs, and rerecord. There are the most basic TAS things like slow-down, memory watching, frame advance, auto-hold, auto-fire. While only really the first is required, the first usually gives way to an emulator that can do the latter. Seeing as PSXauthor is so wonderful to respond to our needs as a community, in the long run, PSX would be abandoned anyway. And dear god, did you read the admins response? His oh so important job, you should bow down to the grand PSXemperor

I got sick watching the AVI. I'm not going to vote the movie down, or rate it poorly, however I think the video needs a warning about that.

Nate has fortunately changed his thoughts on TASes....
I don't really care about his views on TASes. What freaked me out was his thoughts on how democracy worked. The majority is not the position to subjugate the minority. That is why we have systems of checks and balances, a house composed by population count, and a senate composed of artificial land borders. Why 1 person has veto power, yet can still be overruled by a 2/3rds majority in both house and senate. Even if he is now 'ok' with TASes, that doesn't change the underlying philosophies by which he lives his life. He sounds almost manic when he talked about 'saving the world' from TASes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mania "symptoms of mania include rapid speech, racing thoughts, decreased need for sleep, hypersexuality, euphoria, grandiosity, and increased interest in goal-directed activities." Oh it's more than that. Seriously, Nate is off his rocker. I hate to 'Godwin' this thread, but boy does that kid have some megalomaniac tendencies. 'The TAS problem' can only be caused by the extermination of TASes and TASers. He's two steps from using his 'Majority' status to pin the star of david to every TAS. He talks as if it is a 'crime' for a TAS to exist, because poor idiots refuse to look up a definition, or read. Luckily, he has zero power. What an angsty little kid. EDIT: HAHA! Made it to page 11. Looks Like JXQ and I agree on something. http://forum.metroid2002.com/index.php/topic,5057.msg142575.html#msg142575

Uh, I somehow think I started a flamewar. My bad. When I was talking about segmented runs, I should have been more specific... I meant RPG segmented runs, or RPG SDA runs in general. Getting lucky is not a skill. (Bow chica-bow-wow) Most TASes of RPG rely heavily on Luck Manipulation to even BE a 'speedrun.' Otherwise, you are at the mercy of an RNG. Segmented runs of RPGs are just TASes with less save states. They do luck manipulation, just on a larger and rather inefficient scale. That said, some good points in defense have been raised. There is no PSX, PC, PS2, Xbox, Dreamcast, Amiga, Colecovision, Atari 2600, Atari 7800, Commodore 64, Turbograffix 16, PS3, GC, Saturn, Sega CD, Xbox 360, Wii, Jaguar, PSP, Game Gear, Virtual Boy, 3DO, or CDi Emulator with TAS ability yet. (PHEW, and I'm sure I missed a few) Those are fine for any segmented/non-segmented run.

Why? Because with a single-segment run the player is forced to play more carefully and cannot try the wildest tricks he is capable of, if those tricks are very dangerous and could easily cause the player to die, thus ruining the entire attempt.
The player isn't really forced, though, as there are SS runs that show very aggressive play (also applicable to 25-50 minute long score runs of arcade games). It's up to the players, their patience, and their consistency in trick performance.
I heartily agree with Moozooh. Look, a run on SDA should be the top 'athlete' of that game. An athlete is suppose to be consistently good, not just try something until he/she gets lucky and it works. An athlete has to play all 40 minutes of basketball, not save and reset every time he misses a half-court shot. Leave the full-court shots to the TASers. They do it better, and more interestingly. Show us all out skill, by playing the full game, balls to the wall. Show us why you are best at the game, not why you got 'lucky' and made 1 full court shot after 60 tries.
